The murder rate in the USA is five times that of the UK.

Yes. Also, 61% of gun fatalities in the U.S. are suicides, the rest homicides. 27,000 people died by suicide in the U.S. in 2024. In 2024, 7,184 people died by suicide in the UK. I certainly don’t want to see more gun ownership here.

The counter terrorism police has more funds available.

I think it’s a political issue too. The police in many cases are under pressure due to policies which the public then react to.

Perhaps future police statements will be different on what is being considered or not.

You're right what you said about that statement impacting public opinion. It's another blunder from police and it is a major talking point now. When will they ever get it right - Ann deserves more, the Southport children deserved more, Henry Nowak deserved more. When is this going to end where the public stop being manipulated to protect a minority. Something is very wrong in this country.

One of the issues is people wanting all information now! Doesn't matter if it might jeopardise the case. Doesn't matter if the police haven't yet got all the facts. Doesn't matter if we are not personally in danger from the suspect, so many people are demanding we need to know now! Why?

I think this attitude started with the Southport murders. Ever since then people have demanded the facts immediately and speculated wildly when they don't get them. The Huntingdon train attacks for example. If you look at the MN threads about that, they were crazy.

Good point. Plus they can keep him in custody for much longer.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 13/07/2026 14:39

I don't want a gun, how about a sword stick? Pull it out of the walking stick, and you're D'Artignon or La Comtess de Monte Christo.

lcakethereforeIam · 13/07/2026 14:40

The Telegraph have also reported on it being handed over to anti-terrorism

I'm prepared to give some leeway to the Police, they did caveat that there was no evidence of a motive linked to terrorism at that stage. The response of Reform, Farage, Time et al sticks in my throat at little although i don't know what the journalists said that they claim they should apologise for. It sees petty tit for tat in light of the poor woman's murder.

What I don't understand is that if as numerous previous posters have insisted that this is simply a burglary case gone wrong , then why is the case now being headed up by Counter Terrorism Police?

It could be that the previous posters were wrong. They didn't have all the information that the police had and the police have been gathering information all the time since last Wednesday. The police are NOT Nanny McFee. They have to piece together lots of pieces of information and crawl around looking for clues. They can't do it in the wave of a wand.

Because after searching the suspect's house the police found evidence to suggest terrorism, obviously.

Then that's up to police to stop using statements that are definitive and have an agenda. They've made themselves look incompetent - again.

The initial statements on the Southport perpetrator and the post inquiry picture strains credibility for the public, if most can see through it trust goes.

I would say Reform have their minds preoccupied with shitting themselves over security.

Shabana Mahmood's statement is going to be open to scrutiny. It's certainly going to be interesting.

The police have said they were keeping an open mind this whole time, none of their statements were definitive.

I think women should now be allowed to carry guns. The ban according to Rupert Lowe was a massive over-reaction and has allowed things like this to happen. Women and older people should have the power to protect themselves and we need stand your ground laws like in the US as this makes total senses according to Joe Rogan as we cannot be regarded as a civilised society anymore without allowing women and old people to protect themselves.

I'd be too worried about the possibility of guns getting into the wrong hands.

I'm willing to defend myself with whatever household objects are to hand and I'd use a spray.

I thought they said they had no reason to suspect political motives. It shouldn't have been ruled out.

I thought they said they had no reason to suspect political motives. It shouldn't have been ruled out.

But until they've seen something to suggest it IS politically motivated they wouldn't have any reason to suspect it. Saying they have no reason to suspect something isn't the same as ruling it out altogether either.

The more guns there are, the more likelihood of them getting into the wrong hands. The same goes for any weapon.

sittingonabeach · 13/07/2026 14:48

How many of us are currently impacted by what this person has been charged with. Would it matter if we were told tomorrow rather than today? Do we need to demand that police make statements until they have full facts? Surely in the early stages the people that need to know are the families and anyone else who might be at risk (so in this case possibly other politicians depending on the motive). And that doesn’t have to be done publicly

They shouldn't have said anything other than at this stage we are open to possible motives.

They said words like 'at this time' and 'open mind'. They didn't rule out anything. They just didn't have anything at the time to suggest political or terrorist reasons. Have you ever done jury service?

Giggorata · 13/07/2026 14:50

Guns already are in in the wrong hands, regardless of any legislation. It was always the case, as just as it is with other weapons, such as blades.
People can get hold of anything on the black market, including armed forces type weapons, without having to steal them from legitimate owners.
