What I don't understand is that if as numerous previous posters have insisted that this is simply a burglary case gone wrong , then why is the case now being headed up by Counter Terrorism Police?

Because they were working from the info available to us at time and the info we have has now is changed. But then you know that already

AInightingale · 13/07/2026 14:51

I have been wondering about incelism. Is that formally classed as 'terrorism'? AW was very famously a woman who forged a life and career without men and clearly felt no need for their presence, or for male validation. I realise she might be an odd target as an elderly woman, but some of these deranged men hate older women too, they are just rabid misogynists.

Then that's up to police to stop using statements that are definitive and have an agenda. They've made themselves look incompetent - again.

Phrases like "at this stage their is no evidence to suggest.." are not 'definitive'

I think the some on the left do get riled up by public figures such as AW.

Yes, they do. But she really wouldn't be in the top 10 of people that those on the left get riled up by.

Especially 28-year olds.

I agree with whoever said that, in spite of her holding such strong beliefs on divisive issues, it is strange that someone attacked Ann Widdecombe. I'm fascinated to understand what her killer's motivation was. Because she just did not deserve to end her days in this way. I am so sorry for everyone that knew and loved her. A 78-year old woman should be safe in her own home.

They said words like 'at this time' and 'open mind'. They didn't rule out anything. They just didn't have anything at the time to suggest political or terrorist reasons. Have you ever done jury service?

Yes I have. I'm disagreeing on their language being open ended. Anyway, my thoughts are with a wonderful lady who has had her 80th birthday robbed. Sickening.

Because it seems there is a lot more to it, than what was originally known.

Why would someone drive 300 miles to commit a burglary? That makes no sense.

Idk look at the Heather character ok he’s not 28 but he’s quite removed from AW, and yet his comment was violent and personal.

How many of us are currently impacted by what this person has been charged with.

What has he been charged with? I can't see anything on the bbc to say he's been charged.

LuckyHazelFox · 13/07/2026 14:48

They shouldn't have said anything other than at this stage we are open to possible motives.

But they can't do that now because people start speculating, kicking off, slating the police, overly involving themselves, inciting riots and violence and generally just making the police's work a million times harder. So if you want to blame someone for what the police do or dont say at any given point at the early stages of the investigation blame the nuggets who shit stir and have made it so we get useless snippets here and there rather than an actual answer after they've been given adequate time to properly investigate.

She had very traditional views about gender roles though, that would support the incel worldview, and there are plenty more women that are vocally anti-male while forging a successful career. Ann's independence surely wouldn't be as triggering to an incel. It's a mystery.

As to whether incelism counts as terrorism... it didn't for the Plymouth shootings. But this sparked intense debate. If investigators have found an incel manifesto, or evidence he wanted to inspire copycats/terrorise women generally, then it's not impossible that counter-terrorism police would be involved. But not a given, either.

Getting the last word in is your USP. Happy to go along with that.

Fucking hell, you've both made your point. Just ignore each other for christ sake.

You're right what you said about that statement impacting public opinion. It's another blunder from police and it is a major talking point now. When will they ever get it right - Ann deserves more, the Southport children deserved more, Henry Nowak deserved more. When is this going to end where the public stop being manipulated to protect a minority. Something is very wrong in this country.

When is this going to end where the public stop being manipulated to protect a minority.

Why are you assuming the suspect is part of a minority?

It’s because of knee jerk reactions like this that police have to xome out with statements that the suspect is a white British national.

Which fictional detective would you bring in? Miss Marple, Ironside, Inspector Morse, Poirot? I like the French detective Maigret. A few puffs on his pipe and he would have his man.

Miss Marple. She would know of the similar case of Miss Wilkins, a very right wing old lady, a bit of a tartar, who had disapproved of butcher’s boy Harry’s shenanigans with Miss Wilkins’ maid (now up the duff, if you’ll pardon the expression). So Miss W had been loudly saying all round the village that Harry should be ‘seen to’ with a rusty knife.
So nobody was really surprised when Miss Wilkins was found dead on her pantry floor. Murder weapon evidently a hefty rolling pin, with Harry’s prints all over it.

I thought they said they had no reason to suspect political motives. It shouldn't have been ruled out.

'At this moment of time'

Which leaves scope for change once more evidence comes to light.

Heather's comment was vile. But there's a difference between being reminded that you believe someone is hateful and celebrating their death, and forming a fixation with what you consider to be hateful beliefs and travelling 300 miles to kill them.

I just don't see how Ann Widdecombe is relevant enough to a 28-year old to go and do this. Unless maybe they were coerced?

They were answering a question, from Sky News. They were asked something along the lines of "do you have any information to suggest this was politically motivated". The answer was "no, we're open-minded but at this stage we haven't any information that suggests it was politically motivated". That sounds like an accurate summation of where they were at that stage.

It seems to be about where they get their information from.
I’m really concerned about my 30 yr old. He can’t understand that I liked Ann while not sharing many of her views. He thinks it’s disgusting, that people should be hated for their policies and actions. I tried to point out one politician isn’t solely responsible for all that happens downstream of a policy, that there are officers, advisors, voters, and the people who carry out the actions. That’s without considering the society that gave rise to the policy in the first place.
My formerly lovely son was vitriolic about Ann, despite having little interest in politics.
I need to explore with him where it’s come from, but am letting the heat die down a bit first.

Personally I cant see there bring an incel link. Incels are mainly young and AW wasn't really very 'current', especially I imagine in young, male circles.

No idea on why, I’d say doubtful on the question, perhaps it will come to light. Unfortunately for some people violence read or engaged with online becomes enmeshed with rl violence.

They could have said, at this time, it doesn't appear to be a burglary/domestic violence/misogny/mistaken idenity/a grudge but they didn't. By saying it doesn't appear to be politically motivated, they open up the possibility of having to eat their words. Which is exactly what's happened.

Exactly. I don't know why some people aren't getting that.
