I wholly disagreed with her political views.

No person deserves to be murdered though, especially an elderly one.

It's awful.

I suspect she went down fighting, I hope she did.

Which fictional detective would you bring in? Miss Marple, Ironside, Inspector Morse, Poirot? I like the French detective Maigret. A few puffs on his pipe and he would have his man.

It's time to allow women and older people to carry pepper spray.

Not sure that would be helpful in these situations. No one is going to carry it with them every second of the day pottering around their own home

Feels very Jill Dando like to me.

What?!

Wycliffe - bit more local.

A travel size aerosol of hairspray or similar is something I carry in my pocket if walking alone. Never had to use it, and I'd probably be overcome before I could retrieve it, but it's a comfort to know it's there. I haven't told anyone I do this, I think they would laugh at me. But I'm in my sixties now and not gym supple enough anymore to fight a man off. But I don't think any woman is really strong enough to do that either.

I used to carry a small can of spray deodorant back in the 1970s when I had to walk up a dark alley to get home to my parents' place, so you're not alone!

I mainly disagreed with her views, but respect her right to disagree and feel she will have had her reasons for her views. I understand she got along well with all sorts of different people. That’s more important to me than someone’s beliefs. There are plenty of people I align with politically but would avoid at all costs. Unlike Ann.

Vitrolinsanity · Yesterday 13:18

This is an appalling event. I hope she went out giving him hell.

PinkPonyCIub · Yesterday 13:19

If I were elderly and lived alone, I would have a guard dog. A trained one

Electricsausages · Yesterday 13:19

Why the hell did they announce they had got someone then release on no charge
he will be always thought of as suspicious and avoided

Not necessarily. I assume he was able to provide an alibi.

How would that have helped Ann? She was in her own private home, minding her own business. She could have had pepper spray, a rounders bat, a heavy decorative rock or anything to hand that she should could have used on any attacker who broke in. Every single one of us has items in our homes that could be used to hurt or even kill somebody - whether a sharp kitchen knife, a heavy chair or many other things.

I think (only an opinion) that it is going to be one of those cases that never gets solved

i saw her walking in central London years ago, and she was so tiny; she gave me a sweet smile as we passed each other
So very sad

Exactly.

I don't think this was political. I think it was a burglary, gone wrong. Strong woman stands up for herself, weak male kills her.

That's all I can think, it's a terrible shame.

Didn't she have a load of cats? I hope someone is feeding the cats.

FROM THE BBC WEBSITE:**

Major incident portal established as police appeal for tips
"I would appeal to anyone who may have information about this incident, however insignificant it may seem, to come forward and speak with us," says Asst Chief Const Matt Longman.
He is also urging people to avoid speculating online about what happened.
"This is not only potentially harmful to our investigation but also deeply distressing for family and friends of Miss Widdecombe.
"The family have also asked for their privacy to be respected as they come to terms with what has happened.

"We have set up a Major Incident Public Portal for information, images or footage to be submitted to us. This can be found on our website."

It's time to allow women and older people to carry pepper spray.

Deep heat spray incase you get a sore muscle and need instant relief is highly recommended.

Oh I see, so not assassinated by a bullet to the head on the doorstep then?

I do believe this will be solved and I don't think the perpetrator had a clue who she was other than a seemingly rich 78 year old lady.

Her body is barely cold and you think it's going to be one of those cases that never gets solved?

Why do you think this at such an early stage?

This is what I can't understand, though. She was 78 and she was tiny. Mentally and intellectually, she was very strong and determined; but physically, any young bloke could very easily have got her out of the way and rendered her powerless for the time it took to steal her possessions without having to actually hurt her.

Leaving aside the fact that burglars obviously couldn't care less about their victims, it's a very sad indictment that he should have such confidence that turning a burglary into a murder would have negligible additional negative consequences for himself.

I mean in an ideal world maybe.

In reality, the person who knows they're going to attack will be much quicker and be able to grab it, and even more so if they're younger and fitter.

And then of course there's the fact even a slight breeze will blow it back into the user's face.

This. As a Police Officer we had to go on a course to use CS gas sprays because it’s not straight forward. You have to be a certain distance away from the assailant and from you so it doesn’t blow back in your face and incapacitate you rather than the assailant. Also you need prewarning before you’re attacked so unlikely any woman is going to have time to rummage in their bag, find the pepper spray, hold it at a reasonable distance away from them with the nozzle pointing the correct way at a reasonable distance away from the assailant to be effective. We had to practice getting the spray out of our utility belts and it wasn’t easy and we weren’t rummaging through a bag filled with make-up tissues and whatever else. The chances of spraying yourself in the face in an emergency situation were pretty high.

If you must carry something a perfume spray or hairspray would be a much better idea.

Could've been off his face on drugs or mentally deranged.

Both of those things could stop a person worrying about the consequences.

Perfume and hairspray have nowhere near a strong enough spray though.

For it to go into the assailant's eyes, you'd have to be right up in their face.

She had cctv so you would think they’d be able to look at it in that small time frame.
I loved her in Big Brother and Sugar Free Farm. Might see if I can rewatch SFF, it also had the GC and Alison Hammond in it. I just remember Ann tasting a strawberry for the first time after being sugar free for a certain period, practically orgasmic 🤣🤣 She had loads of great one liners.
Ann straightening her hair in BB will also never fail to cheer me up 😂

Pickledonions12 · Yesterday 13:35

I understand that there was CCTV on the property
If so, I wonder if the police will post a photo of the person they think murdered Ann.
