So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

GE needed I think!

GeneralPeter · 22/06/2026 09:49

Is he decent though? He’s endlessly thrown other people under the bus as punishment for his own decisions, and sent ministers out to burn capital on policies he then folds on.

(Not saying that a switch to Burnham is going to fix the important problems though).

the80sweregreat · 22/06/2026 09:49

There will be a General Election by next year is my uneducated guess. The press will hound the new PM as they have all the others.

Agree

GE needed I think!

Why ?

Labour are in power.

Lindy2 · 22/06/2026 09:52

Well I thought Labour would make a shit show of their time in Government and they have.

I actually thought Starmer quite level headed and liked his analytical approach. I'm not a Labour voter but in my opinion he is the best of a very poor talent pool.

Rachel Reeves has been an absolute liability from the start so though I'm relieved she will be out.

The main problem now though is what new mess is to come.

Allmarbleslost · 22/06/2026 09:53

It's just utter madness. The last thing this country needs is another period of political instability. What difference do people think Burnham will actually make??

I've been saying that too. It would be better for the country (and my bank balance as I work them) if we have a general election.

God knows what the Labour Party see in Burnham. He's literally been an MP for a matter of days and they now want him to run the country. He isn't even sworn in yet, he has no record of anything right now, he isn't a cabinet member. He tried and failed to become leader twice before.

Duvetdayneeded · 22/06/2026 09:54

Angela reeves I think went crazy on twitter when there was a conservative change of leadership saying a general election MUST take place as it was disgraceful to have an unelected by the people leader at the top…. Is she going to eat her words now…

RedTagAlan · 22/06/2026 09:49

Why ?

Labour are in power.

But that’s the problem. They have no power. No authority. No guts.
Never mind no clue.

RedTagAlan · 22/06/2026 09:49

Technically Labour are the party in government, but as the leader has no control over the MPs and has been sidelined internationally I am not sure they are in power in any meaningful sense of the word ;)

whirlyhead · 22/06/2026 09:56

The last GE cost about £94.5M. I can think of better things to spend that money on!

Starmer struck me as fundamentally decent but not a good communicator, and certainly not good at letting the public know what he had achieved. Burnham is a good communicator, but I am not sure that is good enough.

DogAnxiety · 22/06/2026 09:56

We are ruled bot farms, algorithm manipulation, foreign powers seeking destabilisation and the right-wing media’s long-term agenda.

Floattheboats · 22/06/2026 09:56

Starmer was awful. Burnham will be equally awful but more to the left. God help us

Who is Angela Reeves?

PistachioTiramisu · 22/06/2026 09:59

I do not like Labour and would never vote for them, but I do feel Starmer has been badly treated. At least he was a known quantity - I dread to think what will happen if/when Burnham/Milliband are in charge, but it won't be any better. A huge lurch to the left, I fear.

Greigesofa · 22/06/2026 09:59

I wish wish wish he had stuck with it. We’ll have to have a GE. what fresh hell is coming

Yes, and sadly, that seems to be winning the day.

Smartiepants79 · 22/06/2026 10:00

This makes me sad and frustrated. I’m not a lover of Starmer. I don’t think he’s done much to deserve this. It’s also short sighted and pointless. Nothing is going to magically change or be better just because he’s been hounded out.
The world continues to be as it is with all the same problems
Just now, instead of expending their energy trying to solve some of the issues, our government is going to spend the next 6 months arguing and back stabbing amongst themselves.
Great.

Nah, it will be the same reform-courting populist shit with worse economic policy.

Nitgel · 22/06/2026 10:00

Feel dismayed by this news.

r0ck · 22/06/2026 10:01

I think this is a complete own goal by Labour and they've shown themselves to be as bad as the bloody Conservatives with their in-party squabbling and personal ambitions now leading to further instability for the country. Sick of the bloody lot of them.

Greigesofa · 22/06/2026 10:01

Burnham will not lurch to the left, he’s going to be business friendly. But Labour have just given up their moral high ground over the Tories revolving doors of PMs with this. The PM leadership role is to lead not be the reactive person to your own party factions. I am so sad he’s gone.
