So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

For those calling for a general election, that's very unlikely.

"decent" ??

Only time he's shown emotion is tears for his own wife and children. His career.

He hasn't cared a jot about the rape of white girls and the murders of people in the UK since he's been in power.

It all feels so manipulated. The "Labour Isn't Working" threads seemed to begin within minutes of them winning the sodding election. Mumsnet threads in general, political ones especially, have a weird edge to them that I can't quite put my finger on (in among the generally unpleasant atmosphere and high numbers of posters just trying to be as nasty as possible) and I've found myself visiting less and less because it feels like an increasing number of users are not here in good faith, regardless of HQ's reassurances.

Agree with the PP who said it feels increasingly like bot farms, foreign interference and social media algorithms are the ones really running the county -- it has nothing to do with how competent a leader Starmer may or may not have been. Personal opinion of Starmer aside, this morning's announcement is both depressing and deeply worrying.

There were frustrating missteps in early days and clearly Starmer was being poorly advised. But a country is not run by one man. And those Labour isn’t Working postings were surprising in singling out Starmer for their vehemence and anger. I agree completely that there is a lot of foreign interference in UK politics. It’s v likely that Putin will be pleased with this change in Labour leadership as it is unstablising.

Actually in a very short space of time under Kier Starmer, Labour began to make some positive changes - which rarely get reported properly eg:

  • the renters’ rights reforms - all good giving tenants (and their pets!) more protection.
  • NHS waiting lists down in just 2 years
  • Rightfully Supporting Ukraine
  • Kept us out of joining in warfare in Middle East
  • Some impressive standing up to Trump and vastly improved international presence
  • school breakfast clubs
  • free childcare rollout
  • significant important workers’ rights reform
  • 500,000 more kids receiving free school meals
  • highest defence spending since Cold War
  • Steel and some railways under public ownership
  • youth EU travel scheme
Plus closer ties to Europe and some signs economy slowly progressing despite Trump’s Middle East interventions.

Yes, some hiccups, but overall, solid policies and a genuine commitment to helping those who genuinely need it. Perhaps not great at media friendly sound bites, but a willingness to listen, consult and adapt when appropriate. Anyway the public and the Labour Party seemed to turn on a principled statesman who gets the job done. More fool us.

I’d like to say Thank you to Sir Keir and his family. In my opinion he did a far better job than the last seven ( plus) prime minsters. I’m happy for his family that they get to start a new chapter.

Indeed.
I like AB too but I’m disappointed by this outcome.

Ha at this focus on a few posters on a thread. We don’t have that much power or influence.

TwelvePiecesOfFlair · 22/06/2026 10:33

instead of expending their energy trying to solve some of the issues, our government is going to spend the next 6 months arguing and back stabbing amongst themselves.
Great.

THIS!!!

The right wing media have manipulated this as usual. They will do it again with Andy Burnham.

For as long as the Labour Party blame ‘right wing’ media rather than reflect on the irreconcilable differences inside their party and policies that don’t resonate with their own MPs, never mind the public, the UK is destined for more of the same.

If it really was a right wing media then they wouldn’t have gunned for May, Sunak and even Johnson and Cameron in the same way, but they did.

JHound · 22/06/2026 10:33

Labour would be mad to call a GE when they don’t have to (given the Tories changed leaders with no GE).

They are out at the next election no matter who is leader.

And speaking of who on earth would want the poisoned chalice that is the current leadership position.

womendeserveequalhumanrights · 22/06/2026 10:33

Maggie Oliver's take on Burnham. I really respect Maggie Oliver - she shows so much decency, compassion, integrity. Deeds not just words. What she says here confirms what I suspected about Burham.

the80sweregreat · 22/06/2026 09:49

There will be a General Election by next year is my uneducated guess. The press will hound the new PM as they have all the others.

The new PM would be a fool to cave to this pressure

LightFragments · 22/06/2026 10:34

I don’t think Starmer is a decent man, but Burnham is worse. And yet another one who doesn’t even know what a woman is that we are expected to believe can run the place.

People will be calling for Burnham to go no sooner than he takes over though. Thats just how things are now.

Dweetfidilove · 22/06/2026 10:35

7 PMs in a decade. I've never known such political instability in a developed nation. All we're missing is a bloody coup.
It's quite extraordinary and terribly depressing 😕.

Lunalara · 22/06/2026 10:35

If there is a GE tomorrow (which there won’t be), Farage would get in. At least the Reform hype train may die out by the next scheduled GE if we wait.

If King Andy calls for an election, he’s even more of an egotistical idiot than I thought. I’m expecting he’ll want to hold on to the giddy joy of entering no 10 as long as he possibly can. That would be the sensible option for labour.

rainingsnoring · 22/06/2026 10:31

Neither the Tories or Reform are interested in a GE, it's just easy to shout.

Lindy2 · 22/06/2026 09:52

Well I thought Labour would make a shit show of their time in Government and they have.

I actually thought Starmer quite level headed and liked his analytical approach. I'm not a Labour voter but in my opinion he is the best of a very poor talent pool.

Rachel Reeves has been an absolute liability from the start so though I'm relieved she will be out.

The main problem now though is what new mess is to come.

Edited

Yes, the Tories sailed such a steady ship………. 🙄

The last GE cost about £94.5M. I can think of better things to spend that money on!

Starmer struck me as fundamentally decent but not a good communicator, and certainly not good at letting the public know what he had achieved. Burnham is a good communicator, but I am not sure that is good enough.

Which is absolutely peanuts the way the state throws money about in a wasteful fashion!

Dollymylove · 22/06/2026 10:38

With the feeling in the country at the moment, it could be disastrous. Regardless of anyone’s opposition to Labour or Tory, they are both fairly reasonable. The alternatives are frightening.

PfizerFan · 22/06/2026 10:40

So shortsighted.

Yes, Starmer's been disappointing but he's still been better than the others by a mile.

Totally disagree. Starmer is totally disingenuous and self serving. Burnham makes decisions and has a track record of positive change which Starmer never had. I dropped my support for the Labour Party due to Starmer but may well return now.

Badbadbunny · 22/06/2026 10:41

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 22/06/2026 10:30

There's probably about 250 Labour MPs who are basically schoolchildren.

Yep, and they’ll turn on Burnham / whoever gets in once the new leader doesn’t sort the country out to their liking within a month, or makes unpopular but necessary choices.

The Labour backbenchers have a lot to answer for.

Yup, nail on the head. Starmer and the whips should have got control over their infant new inexperienced MPs. He should never have u-turned on the 2 child limit for example. He should never have appointed Reeves in the first place, but since that ship had sailed, he should have sacked her when she showed her incompetence. Overall, he's been an incredibly weak PM.

BendoftheBeginning · 22/06/2026 10:41

Starfish1021 · 22/06/2026 10:29

I feel exactly the same, it's deeply troubling to see as I simply don't meet such cruel people in my day to day life. Plus such a strong undercurrent of Reform. With a sprinkle of "I'm not voting for them" I'm just pushing hard to claim they are the only answer to all our problems. Despite so much of our economic downturn directly related to Brexit

I think we have been getting a lot of party activists, and outright paid “agitators” whose purpose is to wind people up against not just the government, but all our institutions - the Beeb, the courts, the police, education, etc. Sometimes the call for mob rule is pretty thinly veiled.

When I read about those two men who went down recently for taking Russian money to commit arson against Starmer, I realized that the idea that Russia or another foreign power using MN to wind up British people and incite them to hate their own country is really not so far fetched. Much less change of being caught, for one thing!

BlueFahrenheit · 22/06/2026 10:41

I'm over the moon.

Starmer was useless to begin with.

Andy Burnham .... does he understand the definition of a biological woman yet?

SwatTheTwit · 22/06/2026 10:42

Can’t lie, i feel kinda bad for him. I think his lack of charisma affected the perception of him perhaps more than it should have.

And the dancing chairs continue.
