So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

Which is absolutely peanuts the way the state throws money about in a wasteful fashion!

I agree. The country has 3 TRILLION of debt and 100 BILLION of interest to pay every year. 100 BILLION spent on HS2.

90 odd million is literally spare change behind the sofa. Less than £1.50 per head of population.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 22/06/2026 10:43

If he hadn’t appointed Rachel Reeves then stuck with her it might not have come to this. Who the next PM chooses as Chancellor is key as we need to start to feel richer and that will there are jobs for our children…

Didn’t Burnham serve as a shadow minister under Corbyn? If so, then I think we can say with confidence that he is further to the left than he would have us believe. Let’s be honest, the Labour lefties know that the voting public would not vote in a government lead by Burnham, but they’re getting him in the back door. Let’s just hope him and his side kick Raynor (who obviously will have been promised the deputy position) doesn’t bankrupt us/does too much damage before the next GE when we get him out.

Starmer also served in Corbyn’s shadow cabinet. Don’t let the facts interfere with a good rant though.

Ha at this focus on a few posters on a thread. We don’t have that much power or influence.

I didn’t say that that thread had much influence. I said the depth of virulent posts were surprising. However, foreign interference is vast, sophisticated and insert bot chats in many online spaces. If FB and insta, why not MN?

BermudaBlues · 22/06/2026 10:44

In the middle of all this global drama - we need stability and unity - not internal squabbling and opportunistic ambitions. Kier Starmer, whilst not perfect is a statesman with an ability to hold his own on the global stage on our behalf. IMO his resignation is the wrong decision for the UK and the labour party in general. Now instead of actually getting on with running the country - there will be all sorts of shenanigans that serve noone except those who seek power through exploitation of the circumstances. Total smoke amd mirrors distraction. FFS.

notmoredirtywashing · 22/06/2026 10:44

@BendoftheBeginning100% agree with you. It’s a hatchet job

BlueFahrenheit · 22/06/2026 10:44

The necessary stance to take, especially as Reformers are making their views loud and clear.

DrBlackbird · 22/06/2026 10:45

BlueFahrenheit · 22/06/2026 10:41

I'm over the moon.

Starmer was useless to begin with.

Andy Burnham .... does he understand the definition of a biological woman yet?

I don’t think he goes. His track record is ‘let’s all just get along’

ExitPursuedByABare · 22/06/2026 10:45

I’m no labour supporter but I had high hopes for Starmer and it was great to get a change of government from the imploding Tories. But he quickly became an utter disappointment with all his flip flopping and reversal of decisions. Even my friend’s 99 year old ex communist, red to her core mum, who wept the last time the Tories won an election, bewailing the thought that she’d never see another Labour government and who was cock a hoop in 2024, very quickly expressed utter despair in his leadership abilities.

He might be a decent man but he’s lily livered.

LaurelWillow · 22/06/2026 10:46

EasternStandard · 22/06/2026 10:31

They’re only there because enough people voted them in. They’re going to behave like Labour.

Pretty obvious that they are there because enough people voted them in. That's how it works of course.

England is walking blindly into a trap. I’ve got the opportunity to leave at any point when things become too unbearable here because of my EU passport but I feel sorry for the majority of people who can’t.

Actually in a very short space of time under Kier Starmer, Labour began to make some positive changes - which rarely get reported properly eg:

  • the renters’ rights reforms - all good giving tenants (and their pets!) more protection.
  • NHS waiting lists down in just 2 years
  • Rightfully Supporting Ukraine
  • Kept us out of joining in warfare in Middle East
  • Some impressive standing up to Trump and vastly improved international presence
  • school breakfast clubs
  • free childcare rollout
  • significant important workers’ rights reform
  • 500,000 more kids receiving free school meals
  • highest defence spending since Cold War
  • Steel and some railways under public ownership
  • youth EU travel scheme
Plus closer ties to Europe and some signs economy slowly progressing despite Trump’s Middle East interventions.

Yes, some hiccups, but overall, solid policies and a genuine commitment to helping those who genuinely need it. Perhaps not great at media friendly sound bites, but a willingness to listen, consult and adapt when appropriate. Anyway the public and the Labour Party seemed to turn on a principled statesman who gets the job done. More fool us.

I’d like to say Thank you to Sir Keir and his family. In my opinion he did a far better job than the last seven ( plus) prime minsters. I’m happy for his family that they get to start a new chapter.

Renter's rights reforms basically pushed rents sky high and pushed my lovely tenant out of her home... great.

Not really. The depth of dislike electorally has just removed the PM. It’s mn that’s out of sync now.

As for bots can you be clear on who you mean exactly? Are you referring to that thread?

I hope Burnham has the humility to make Kier Starmer foreign secretary at the very least

Exactly this. Change just for change's sake is far from a good thing, particularly in these times.

"decent" ??

Only time he's shown emotion is tears for his own wife and children. His career.

He hasn't cared a jot about the rape of white girls and the murders of people in the UK since he's been in power.

Nor for the farmers who, already in despair at the financial viability of their livelihoods, were pushed over the edge by Reeves' ill thought out, hurriedly cobbled changes affecting IHT on their agricultural assets.
Starmer & Reeves have blood on their hands as far as the farming community is concerned.

maybe he'll put pressure on the H.O. vetting bods to fast-track him for the American Ambassador post.

Yup. And their workers rights acts will push workers out of their jobs too!

These things are all fine and dandy for the ones who keep their tenancies/jobs, but an utter disaster for those who don't.

mugglewump · 22/06/2026 10:50

I am sad that he has resigned. He has been an amazing statesman and has dealt incredibly diplomatically with all the world upsets that have been going on. At home he has quietly been making change - probably quietly because the right-wing media never report anything good that a Labout government does. He has been a very safe pair of hands, and my only criticism is that he has not been bold enough to push for the changes that many in his party want.

hedgeknight · 22/06/2026 10:38

Neither the Tories or Reform are interested in a GE, it's just easy to shout.

Probably. It's so easy to shout loudly nowadays on SM without having any sensible plans whatsoever.

This makes me sad and frustrated. I’m not a lover of Starmer. I don’t think he’s done much to deserve this. It’s also short sighted and pointless. Nothing is going to magically change or be better just because he’s been hounded out.
The world continues to be as it is with all the same problems
Just now, instead of expending their energy trying to solve some of the issues, our government is going to spend the next 6 months arguing and back stabbing amongst themselves.
Great.

Agree.

Livelovebehappy · 22/06/2026 10:50

Badbadbunny · 22/06/2026 10:27

Corbyn got more votes than Starmer when Corbyn lost the 2019 GE.

You can spin it all you like. The 2019 election was a two horse race. The political field of parties has increased since then, so more distribution of votes. Please don’t suggest that Corbyn would be the people’s choice over Starmer….

Womanofcustard · 22/06/2026 10:50

If I was Kier Starmer (which I’m not!) I would resign as MP as well - why would he want to continue working alongside those MPs who have let him down so badly?

It's not spin, it was facts. More voters voted for Corbyn than Starmer as per statistics.

Renter's rights reforms basically pushed rents sky high and pushed my lovely tenant out of her home... great.

Do you mean that you raised the rent to a level that 'your lovely tenant' couldn't afford? How else was she 'pushed out'?
