So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

Pants.

I hope Reeves and Miliband stick around, especially as the numbers are going in the right direction.

EvolvedAlready · 22/06/2026 10:01

From an external perspective, not in the UK. It’s a bad look.
it just once again demonstrates that the gov don’t know what they are doing, year after year.
Starmer was the best in years, he inherited a really tough economy and was slowly trying to stabilise.
This circus is an embarrassment for the UK…. Again.

Doubtful on Reeves not being ousted too

JoyousOpalLemur · 22/06/2026 10:03

Labour MPs have done EXACTLY what the Tory MPs did in the last parliament, and have learnt nothing.

The fact that Burnham had to be parachuted in even though they had 400+ MPs to do the job shows what a mess they are.

The country voted for Starmer to be PM. Labour MPs have decided to impose as PM someone who wasn't even an MP this time last week.

The only way this will be forgiven is if Burnham can sort the economy out, and that's unlikely to happen.

LettuceAndCarrots · 22/06/2026 10:04

I think it's really sad. I feel like he's been hounded out by the press, and after the insanity of so many Conservative leadership changes I have zero appetite for more instability. Just let the elected person serve their term!

Applepe · 22/06/2026 10:04

God help us when Burnham becomes PM. He’s such a people pleaser, he’ll tell you what you want to hear and do the opposite. What a mess!

Lunalara · 22/06/2026 10:04

I like many others am annoyed by this. Starmer made some unpopular policies, but you could tell that he was trying to fix this mess in some way. I guess let’s hope that the next leader is better, but I predict that we will be in this same mess within a year.

Teosl · 22/06/2026 10:04

I’m not even a fan of Starmer but this is ridiculous, we (public, press, their party) need to give PMs the term. We’re running through PMs, no long term thinking and Burnham is going to come in and we will have all this disruption and instability for essentially zero change.

Rachel Reeves is obviously going to lose her job!

keepswimming38 · 22/06/2026 10:05

Ah I see Reform voters have started their thread now. How predictable!

Livelovebehappy · 22/06/2026 10:05

God help us all. Let the shit show begin……

Tonissister · 22/06/2026 10:05

I don't think he is decent. Doesn't know what a woman is. Shocking behaviour over Mandelson.

He has no presence. While I hate the cult of celebrating politicians who are showmen with no morals, a country;s leader does have to have a bit of charisma. His voice is shockingly dreary. He's barely ever on TV or radio so has no presence to the nation. No clear policies. The only thing he did which I admire was standing up to Trump and saying no to war. That was huge and I respect him deeply for that. But if he has that much backbone, why has he not shown it throughout?

LadyEnemy · 22/06/2026 10:05

It’s the media, they will keep hounding any PM until they are forced to resign. They keep doing this and they will keep doing it. This is why the country can’t get anything done. I’m disappointed that Kier didn’t stand firm and carry on. He was doing OK as far as I can see. What did he do that was so wrong?

There are so many problems and NO money, what do people expect? It’s going to take a lot of time and consistency to get results.

Twiglets1 · 22/06/2026 10:06

He wasn't the worst PM, which is faint praise I guess.

It remains to be seen whether his replacement is any better but the local election results were a sign he had to go and things haven't improved since then.

Hopefully Rachel Reeves gets replaced too.

We won't have a GE that isn't procedure - the voting will begin soon for Burnham, Streeting - maybe Al Carns - and anyone else who thinks they have enough support.

BelleEpoque27 · 22/06/2026 10:06

Bollocks. This has been entirely manufactured by the media. He was a decent PM who stood up to Trump and was well respected. He got a lot wrong, but things are changing slowly.

Now Farage and the media will go on and on about a general election, and Burnham's ego will make him call one just so he can be crowned. He won't be, we'll get a fucking Reform government and we'll all be fucked.

Angela reeves I think went crazy on twitter when there was a conservative change of leadership saying a general election MUST take place as it was disgraceful to have an unelected by the people leader at the top…. Is she going to eat her words now…

I strongly dislike Angela Rayner (who I assume you’re talking about). But I find it hard to hold that against anyone. I imagine half the Tories who talked about how a GE isn’t remotely necessary when getting a new leader will all be saying one is now definitely essential. It’s their job as opposition - they have to say they want an election.

He was hounded out by his own MPs - the press just followed their lead.

He had MPs resigning in the summer of 2024, just days after he was elected, for not expanding welfare, and his MPs then voted against any meaningful economic changes that Reeves had to bring in.

There's probably about 250 Labour MPs who are basically schoolchildren.

dottiehens · 22/06/2026 10:07

Decent man with no plan. Was that an accurate statement on one of the papers? I don’t find him half as decent as he should be. However, I take that boring plank any day than the nuts that can replaced him. I like Ivette Cooper better than the rest.

wetwiped · 22/06/2026 10:07

r0ck · 22/06/2026 10:01

I think this is a complete own goal by Labour and they've shown themselves to be as bad as the bloody Conservatives with their in-party squabbling and personal ambitions now leading to further instability for the country. Sick of the bloody lot of them.

100% agree

He was a Corbynista when that suited him and he stood on a left wing mandate in Makerfield, essentially Labour wasn’t being Labour enough.

Starmer's resignation speech had me shouting at the telly. Either the man is deluded, or he believes his own lies (or the lies he is fed?). IF NHS waiting lists are shorter it is only because the process has changed and has been manipulated. People now have to wait before they are even considered for a waiting list - does he not see the utter sh!t show that is the current NHS with the sick dying in hospital corridors and people unable to easily get appointments with their GP? Then came his assertion about 'the boats' - does he never listen to the news? 😡 However, I did feel the end of the speech was very gracious and came from the heart.
