Left wingers seem as bad as right wingers

I’ve seen so many people this last week who see themselves as such “right on” virtuous people posting the most horrible things on social media.

One replied to a post about Charlie Kirk, it was basically a “sorry not sorry” post because he’s so hateful. When asked by someone if she’s actually seen any of his debates she said she didn’t need to, the facts are there that he was basically a fascist who incites violence. FWIW I’ve watched several of his videos since seeing her post today and seen nothing that suggests this, even though I don’t agree with his opinion on many things (but apparently he’s doing it in code, whatever that means)

Another friend was ranting about the protest in London and using really horrible terms to describe people that went. I hate what the flags have come to represent, and I don’t doubt that there were many thugs there just wanting to stir up hate. Surely though, describing all who went to the protest as the same (basically they’re all thick as shit racist hooligans) is no better than someone describing all immigrants as benefit chasing potential rapists (or insert any other racist stereotype)

Am I missing something? Or is it considered acceptable to make sweeping generalisations as long as you’re on the left side of the political spectrum?

Might the same little old lady also be intimidated by a crowd of coked-up shaven-headed blokes with England flags and cans of Stella, and about half of them having convictions for domestic violence, chanting racist slogans towards the hotel?

The complete and utter contempt and disdain the Left ( seemingly now a place occupied by middle class, degree holding folk ) have for the working class was revealed in all it's ugliness during the Brexit debate,and certainly after the referendum. I, as a bit of an EU loving lefty ( at that time ) was hugely disappointed. It was truly vile. And very illuminating.

It doesn’t have to be about who’s ‘worse’. However, I agree with you that the supposedly tolerant left don’t always cover themselves in glory. Some of the responses to Luigi Mangione and Charlie Kirk are two examples of moral compasses gone very wrong indeed. The left also has an antisemitism problem.

And as pp have said, anyone who thinks people on the left don’t intimidate and threaten women, they haven’t been paying attention to the trans debate.

Politics is too tribal, and tribalism makes people justify, say and do things they ought to know are wrong.

I wouldn't describe myself as far left, more centre left to be honest. But I honestly believe that anyone who went on that march and didn't leave reconsidering who they align themselves with, is a racist.

The Antifa mob who show up masked to intimidate women at women’s rights events are very unpleasant indeed - they usually identify as far-left or socialist. I firmly believe in the horseshoe theory. The far left when speaking about deporting Jews from Israel use the same language as the ultra far right calling for mass-deportations of Muslims from the UK.

And they clearly haven’t seen any of the abhorrent abuse towards the grieving family of Charlie Kirk. Typically lefties… no debate, just screaming abuse and denial of anybody else’s viewpoint.

As a "typical leftie" myself, I'm appalled by Charlie Kirk's assassination and by the insensitive and offensive comments that some people have made in the wake of his murder. I agree that it is abhorrent to direct abuse towards his grieving family, who deserve nothing other than compassion and support at this time. And pretty much every other "typical leftie" that I've spoken to about the issue feels the same. So less of the crass generalisations all round, please.

This thread epitomises all that is wrong with politics, the media, social media and the subsequent lies and division in 2025.

He campaigned for Brexit but he wasn't in power so he had no control of how it was implemented. Incidentally the NHS got more money than what was stated on the promotion bus! But still it went down a black hole.

Yes, I know. Conservative was in power. Farage still campaigned for it on materially incorrect information. I can’t find any references to the NHS actually receiving the £350M a week as a result of Brexit? Would love to see it though.

The same young man that laughed about the slaughter of people in Gaza? The deaths of all those innocent children and babies? I think the guy is a prick but I’m not advocating what happened to him, no one should be killed for their beliefs.
Also, I have a massive issue with the framing of this as a collective murder that “the left” have perpetrated. Your post frames it as that too “one of your..” it’s right wing divisive propaganda.

This was one guy who was raised in a very right wing, gun toting household. It’s not been fully established that he wasn’t a far right groyper yet. The memes on the casing suggest that he might have been and he literally dressed up as a groyper meme for Halloween. Even if he WAS a convert to the left, how can you separate his actions from his right wing upbringing? His proficiency with weapons was due to this. Without it, Kirk would likely still be alive. Anyway, this is a singular man who committed this crime, not the entire left wing - the majority of whom I’ve seen condemn the murder even if they disagree with his ideology.

Oh and the vast majority of these type of crimes are committed by the far right. Do you claim all of them as “yours”?
