Left wingers seem as bad as right wingers

I’ve seen so many people this last week who see themselves as such “right on” virtuous people posting the most horrible things on social media.

One replied to a post about Charlie Kirk, it was basically a “sorry not sorry” post because he’s so hateful. When asked by someone if she’s actually seen any of his debates she said she didn’t need to, the facts are there that he was basically a fascist who incites violence. FWIW I’ve watched several of his videos since seeing her post today and seen nothing that suggests this, even though I don’t agree with his opinion on many things (but apparently he’s doing it in code, whatever that means)

Another friend was ranting about the protest in London and using really horrible terms to describe people that went. I hate what the flags have come to represent, and I don’t doubt that there were many thugs there just wanting to stir up hate. Surely though, describing all who went to the protest as the same (basically they’re all thick as shit racist hooligans) is no better than someone describing all immigrants as benefit chasing potential rapists (or insert any other racist stereotype)

Am I missing something? Or is it considered acceptable to make sweeping generalisations as long as you’re on the left side of the political spectrum?

The far left are much worse in my opinion.

None of this is remotely new, it's just that now every citizen has a broadcasting device in their pocket and can make their (often anonymous) views as virulently clear as they like.

I'm not bothered if people notice that thugs are thugs. Why should people in the centre or on the left have to pussyfoot about so that we don't look 'as rude as them'?

I absolutely will be rude about racist thugs, and I will never be as bad as them.

I’m not doubting that there are many racist thugs about, and plenty went on that march. I just mean the absolute sweeping generalisation that everyone who went on the march had no brain cells to rub together.

Worse than, say, hounding the parents of murdered children by claiming that their dead kids never even existed and that they were crisis actors?

If they believe everything Tommy Robinson and his racist thug mates say, then they can't be very bright.

The solution is to come off or stop looking at social media.

I am tired of it and have worn myself looking at the posts on our local Facebook page.

The left call the right names, the right want to... take away abortion rights which will cause women to die and live in poverty. Deport people, tear them away from their families and lives. Keep it so there's no real gun control so a school gets shot up every week. Harass people in the street just because of their skin colour or nationality. Smash in people's businesses because of the colour of their skin. But your problem is with the left being mean?

The thing that makes the left worse is their hypocrisy

A test you can do for yourself on this is to say to people you support Trump, or even that you "don't mind Trump". Just see what awful nastiness you receive.

I was on the left for most of my life but I grew up and the right weren't particularly nasty about that - more piss taking, But WOW, the moment you say you support conservative values, you won't believe what happens. People won't talk to you, call you all sorts of insults - it is unbelievable.

It is also why there is a 'silent majority' - a well known phenomenon that people on the right stay quiet as it is the left that are the awful nasty and vicious lot

Calling people ‘not very bright’ just because they listen to Tommy Robinson is so narrow minded. It’s easier to call them unintelligent and racists rather than to actually debate the points he raises. If his arguments are so wrong, counter them with facts instead of usual screaming and name calling from the left.

Go far enough to the left or the right and they look fairly similar as extremes have authoritarian ideology as part of their make up .

Look at the trans debate which splits Mumsnet.

Far right refuses to accept anyone is trans and thinks they are using it as a way to access woman alone / win at sports .

Far left - we have violence threatened to anyone not completely accepting that someone identifying as a woman can access all woman's only spaces .

What both of them have in common is a refusal to accept any other view point and a desire to make others agree with them

Whereas the right are all about free speech and "fuck your feelings" right up until you say something they don't like and you can hear the howls of outrage across the Internet.

The left have never been and will never be as bad as the right. Their values are completely different.

The far side of either view point are equally problematic. Most people fall in a wide mid point and just go about their business.

All the leftish people I know, sharp tongued as they may be, are busy running community groups, working in caring professions, going to church/synagogue/temple, being on committees etc etc. Bloody do gooders! The rightish people I know, are...not.

The left are often trying to make decisions that benefit others and the right are often trying to make decisions to benefit the self. At the higher level of the right - politicians and the rich people that fund them - they have convinced people, mostly via social media, that they care about the those with less and that the left are the enemy. You can see it in the rote phrases that pop up over and over, the most current is: ‘you don’t listen to us.’ Somehow the rich men have convinced the people with less that they care about them, even with all evidence to the contrary. They’re saying ‘yes, Conservative have been horrific for years, but what we need is an even more severe version of that!’ And people are so brainwashed they’re lapping it up.

But at some point perhaps we just have to let people do the thing and reap the result. It makes me sad for the young and future generations that can’t vote but here we are.

You have absolutely no idea if that's true. Some reports are saying he killed Kirk because he wasn't right wing enough – and that may not be true either.

I should add, there is one person I know who has been really sucked in by the right wing stuff recently, but who also volunteers. It’s sad to me because she is well meaning but clearly can’t connect where the funding for the service she volunteers for comes from.

I completely agree with you with regard to some of the comments about Charlie Kirk. It doesn't matter how objectionable you think his views were - I personally found some of his opinions abhorrent - any half-way civilised person must condemn his killing and any kind of political violence. What happened to him was horrific, and any comments seeking to justify or mock his death are disgusting.

As far as the protesters in London are concerned, we'll have to agree to disagree. Anyone who goes out on a march organised by Tommy Robinson is either thick or racist, possibly both. I don't really see why we should have to pretend otherwise?

Not one of my right leaning friends have received hate messages after making comments on SM.

Every one of the leftie group regularly get DMs telling us to shut up, with name calling and often making threats of rape or attacks.
