Non-mandatory cards have been attempted multiple times and failed to be adopted, do you think now is the time to make them mandatory?

No

Why on earth would they be even remotely necessary?

if I need ID for something I have a driving licence and a passport

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 16/08/2025 16:14

Why not?

KatyPerimenopause · 16/08/2025 16:14

Yes, precisely because I don't have a driving licence or a passport.

MiloMinderbinder925 · 16/08/2025 16:14

We're already under surveillance 24/7 and they're now using face recognition. Do we really want compulsory ID as well?

DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2025 16:15

I'd have no problem with this.

Yes, precisely because I don't have a driving licence or a passport.

you can get either of those things easily - a provisional licence if you don’t want to learn to drive.

Why should I have to get a mandatory ID card because you don’t have the basic ID 90% of people have?

Not everyone has these. So why not unless someone has something to hide.

Augustus40 · 16/08/2025 16:17

I feel nobody should really object to this. I would be quite happy to carry one around with me.

If we have nothing to hide then why should it matter.

It still doesn’t answer the question about why they’re necessary. As I said above people can get other kinds of ID if they want. It’s not an argument for me having to get one because other people don’t have a DL or passport.

and “nothing to hide” is such a lazy and unintelligent argument.

Greentambourine · 16/08/2025 16:19

Yes. I don't drive so do not have a driving licence. I have not been abroad for years and my passport ran out. It is expensive to renew a passport. It is now difficult to get a new bank account or various other things without official ID. Why should the only official forms of ID mean you have to drive or go abroad?
An ID card would be easier to carry around than a passport. I would like an ID card.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 16/08/2025 16:22

I’m pretty sure surprised at how many people distrust the government, yet see nothing wrong in this kind of authoritarian creep.

If you think this wouldn’t morph into having to show your ID on demand, having movements tracked etc you’re naive

sleepwouldbenice · 16/08/2025 16:24

Yes for consistency for both home and abroad, and can link to nhs records, employment etc. Much cheaper all round and convenient

GentleSheep · 16/08/2025 16:24

No. It'll be digital ID which in time will link up to all sorts of other information about yourself, including face recognition, where you make purchases, social media posts. All we need is a social credit system and we'll be communist China! Think it can't happen? Signs are pointing that way.

Get a Citizen Card.

cheezncrackers · 16/08/2025 16:25

For all of you saying you have to carry it around - it's being suggested that it will be a digital pass on your phone. Of course, some people don't have phones, so I'm not sure how that would work.

Timelineuk · 16/08/2025 16:27

I think it’s on the road to some sort of Orwellian Huxley world and I don’t think it’s stopping at mandatory ID. That’s basic. Something isn’t right with these governments around the world, not all countries but many. So power hungry and controlling of the masses.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 16/08/2025 16:27

I see no one has any concerns with issues like privacy, data, or civil liberties. Baffling. Think about why a government might want its citizens to have these. Hint; it won’t be so you can get served in a pub or open a bank account more easily

Well this is it. The government is behaving like power hungry narcissistic. I wouldn’t allow my husband to track so why them? Democracy is dying

When I lived in Aus years ago, they had a 'Proof of age card'. It looked like like a drivers licence with photo, DOB, address etc and was specifically for those that didn't have a passport or drivers licence and wanted to prove their age for clubs etc. It wasn't a mandatory ID card though, only for those that wanted one.

You can only get a driving licence if medically you're allowed to drive. I can't and I don't want to carry my passport around

Citizens cards are pointless as so many places don't accept them

isthesolution · 16/08/2025 16:31

Yes. And you should have to use it to open a social media account and many other things for the safety of others!

And that means the rest of us need to be under government surveilance because?…

Yep, and it's not just our government of course but it'll come in across a lot of countries.

Wrong think, to put it simply! Disagree with immigration? Oops we've seen your social media posts. You might be a trouble maker. Better send the boys in blue around. Sounds crazy but this is where it's heading.
