A Christian sermon is now more controversial than a nazi salute! WTF!

Republicans' reactions to Rev Mariann Budde include calls for her to be booted out of the US due to her sermon reminding the congregation (which included Pres. Trump) that the Christian message features some very basic principles such as treating others with humanity and respect. Georgia congressman Mike Collins Budde, a US citizen, “should be added to the deportation list” because of it. So, is the US now a place where people will condemn the basic tenets of Christianity but celebrate a nazi-saluting notorious proponent of trans-humanism (why doesn't Trump call out this frankly creepy and downright wicked pursuit and picks on vulnerable people instead?)? What of freedom of expression? A one-way street? Those who branded the Reverend 'leftist' and closed their ears to her message should not be calling themselves Christians.
One of my good friend lives in Georgia. She told me that one of her local church ministers got told off by his congregation for talking about the ten commandments because 'too leftist'. I shit you not. I don't normally pray - at least not publicly- but really, God help us all!

Distraction politics.

Oh look, a squirrel!

StandFirm · 22/01/2025 11:55

But it does shine a light on certain values taking precedence over others. I do think it's relevant in terms of the cultural discourse in the US and its direction of travel.

It's absolutely shocking. And somehow the American Christians will defend him.

Brave woman.

You could see the discomfort on their faces when there was reference to how a compassionate person would behave - nothing like trump's version of 'I'm one of god's favourites' brand of christianity.

Don't they? I mean, it is and it was. But by all means be an apologist for him.

The attacks on the Bishop are to distract from that fact.

StandFirm · 22/01/2025 12:01

By the way, for those you are not sure about what I mean by trans-humanism: it's the pursuit of immortality by any means possible, including downloading consciousness etc. Something that Musk is very notoriously involved with.
I find it telling that in Trump's world, transgenderism is deemed awful but not billionaires' unethical messing around with the very notion of humanity.

They wouldn't know compassion if it hit them square in the face.

Meanwhile people with a whole brain know that isn't actually as relevant as pointing out how he (musk) is a deluded narcissist.
I'm on the fence regarding what he was doing and think he deliberately made it something attention seeking, because why even consider something that even vaguely resembles a nazi symbol.

Hedgerow2 · 22/01/2025 12:03

She was wonderful wasn't she? I had the service on tv but wasn't really paying attention until she started with her plea for mercy. I was transfixed! And delighted to see that Trump was clearly furious! He thought it was a disappointing service ... The sheer hypocrisy of claiming to be an instrument of god but implementing such cruel policies. I don't know how Trump and his cronies have the audacity to set foot in a place of worship.

RhannionKPSS · 22/01/2025 12:04

It wasn’t Christian at all, she was rude, patronizing, pathetic and lied.

BorgQueen · 22/01/2025 12:05

Telling people it’s impossible to change Sex and stopping illegal immigrants at the border isn’t cruel, it’s basic common sense. If he can smash the drug cartels, even better.

It was absolutely a nazi salute. Elon comes from a long line of apartheid supporters who made they money in South Africa. He is a white supremacist.

He just pardoned the founder of 'Silk Road' so I guess some drug dealers are OK in his book, just not brown ones.

This is entirely missing the point I am trying to make.

There is only one actual nazi salute, that wasn’t it 😉
A white supremacist, really? 🤣

Is it rude to preach the Scriptures? That she was directly quoting from?

She wouldn't be the first person to be crucified for reminding the powerful about their obligations to the poor and disinherited.... I am sure she believes herself to be in good company.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 22/01/2025 12:11

Right wing Christianity in the US seems to run along prosperity gospel lines. If you are rich it is because you are living as God wants and if you are poor and unfortunate then it is because God is punishing you for something. It is very convenient if you are rich and like judging people.

Preaching basic tenets of Christianity in a polite and gentle manner during a church service is hardly rude.

And how exactly did she lie?

StandFirm · 22/01/2025 12:13

Yes I know...
It's the worst parts of Puritanism, which is an especially unforgiving brand of Protestantism.

Snorlaxo · 22/01/2025 12:15

It’s obviously not a Nazi salute. Some people are calling it that because it suits their bias that MAGA must be fascist.
X have lots of videos of left wing people doing the gesture eg AOC and Obama but it’s not considered a Nazi salute because they aren’t right wing.
If this was a MN’s son on stage then people would be saying disability discrimination as EM has Asperger’s and his body movement can look awkward and exaggerated to NT onlookers.

There’s going to be at least 4 more years of extreme dead cat politics so brace yourself.

Actually, all the autistic people I know (myself included) are steaming mad about the "but he's autistic" defence. Magical how many of us manage to not look like we're doing Nazi salutes.
