Why do people in the UK support Trump?

Kendodd · 20/01/2025 18:29

I've even seen MAGA flags (ok, maybe the owner was American). But Trump's focus and ONLY thing he cares about is America. He couldn't give a shit about the UK and would happily see the UK in ruins if it benefited America.

Must be tough for you to be in the minority of people in the US that isn't stupid and uneducated.

Don't be daft. Even the minority is still a huge swathe of people, I am far from alone!!! It won't always be this bad, our kids will grow up and make better choices

AlisonDonut · 21/01/2025 07:52

SallyWD · 21/01/2025 07:28

I don't think this is the case though. The anti-woke people claim they're being silenced but actually shout the loudest.

Then you haven't been paying attention.

Cokezeroandlime · 21/01/2025 07:52

torreli · 21/01/2025 04:32

It's absolutely this. The longer we ridicule people for voting (far) right, the longer they'll keep gaining power. It'll be the uk next. Worrying times ahead.

Insulting voters doesn't have the effect people think it does. This is a woke pushback.

I think it’s this as well, but the left just won’t see it! On the radio yesterday they were downplaying the woke pushback and trying to push the narrative that it definitely wasn’t because of that that people voted for trump and that most people don’t actually care about wokeness and it’s not on their radar!

I don’t know if the left are totally deluded, not in the real world or just a bit thick!

littleblackcat247 · 21/01/2025 07:53

@spuddy4 such super sarcasm - unfortunately you might need to do a spot of fact checking as Trump did not win with a massive landslide, so how can SlugsWon be in a minority??

EasternStandard · 21/01/2025 07:55

SlugsWon · 21/01/2025 07:17

I'm American, I'm invested.

It is 100% because he says what people think, and people are uneducated, uncaring, and incapable of seeing beyond their most immediate needs and wants. It is easier to blame others - immigrants, lefties, the wider world in general, scientists - than it is to enact real change.

Also, to everyone who says the left is ushering in the far right by calling their voters ignorant - sorry, but no. Ignorant voters are ignorant. Poor educational systems facilitate this. Racists making decisions based on racism does happen. Billionaire colonialists meddling in elections is not democracy in action. Stupid people making stupid choices has happened since the beginning of time, it's happening now, they will drag the rest of us down with them, and I'm sorry if this hurts anyone's feelings but the world is not lurching to the right because of left leaning people calling out MAGA and Brexit voters for the thickos they are.

Out of this your line on heading to the right is correct. It’s what we’re seeing in many countries and politicians who can’t connect on the issues people want to vote on will struggle or be voted out of power.

I assume mn will be full of ‘thicko’ accusations but it’s pointless. People get fed up with a direction, vote accordingly others lash out hence the posts

He won, therefore it was a majority of those who voted. We cannot speak for those who didn’t bother. Therefore @SlugsWon is in a minority. That is the absolute epitome of the democratic process - the majority vote wins.

Nonsense , long before Social Media, thick people were making stupid voting choices.

Woke is just a name given by the right, to describe people who don't agree with them, they hate challenge so say they are being "Silenced" yet scream the loudest when things don't go their way.... Trump of course was the biggest cry baby when he lost in 2020... the right in the UK are screaming from the roof tops over the the UKs General Election result.

Lets face it, you must be a bit thick to vote in a certain way because you believe others think you re stupid!!!

Maddy70 · 21/01/2025 08:23

Saw this and it's so powerful

THIS WAS ON A FRIEND’S PAGE: An anguished question from a Trump supporter: ‘Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?’

THE SERIOUS ANSWER: Here’s what the majority of anti-Trump voters honestly feel about Trump supporters en masse:

That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought "Fine." (www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2018/04/10/trump-university-settlement-judge-finalized/502387002/)
That when you saw a man who had made it his business practice to stiff his creditors, you said, "Okay." (www.thedailybeast.com/trump-hotel-paid-millions-in-fines-for-unpaid-work)
That when you heard him proudly brag about his own history of sexual abuse, you said, "No problem." (abcnews.go.com/Politics/list-trumps-accusers-allegations-sexual-misconduct/story?id=51956410)
That when he made up stories about seeing Muslim-Americans in the thousands cheering the destruction of the World Trade Center, you said, "Not an issue." (www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/11/22/donald-trumps-outrageous-claim-that-thousands-of-new-jersey-muslims-celebrated-the-911-attacks/)
That when you saw him brag that he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and you wouldn't care, you exclaimed, "He sure knows me." (www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/10/23/president-donald-trump-could-shoot-someone-without-prosecution/4073405002/)
That when you heard him relating a story of an elderly guest of his country club, an 80-year old man, who fell off a stage and hit his head, to Trump replied: “‘Oh my God, that’s disgusting,’ and I turned away. I couldn’t—you know, he was right in front of me, and I turned away. I didn’t want to touch him. He was bleeding all over the place. And I felt terrible, because it was a beautiful white marble floor, and now it had changed color. Became very red.” You said, "That's cool!" (www.gq.com/story/donald-trump-howard-stern-story)
That when you saw him mock the disabled, you thought it was the funniest thing you ever saw. (www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/donald-trump-criticized-after-he-appears-mock-reporter-serge-kovaleski-n470016)
That when you heard him brag that he doesn't read books, you said, "Well, who has time?" (www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/01/americas-first-post-text-president/549794/)
That when the Central Park Five were compensated as innocent men convicted of a crime they didn't commit, and he angrily said that they should still be in prison, you said, "That makes sense." (www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/06/19/what-trump-has-said-central-park-five/1501321001/)
That when you heard him tell his supporters to beat up protesters and that he would hire attorneys, you thought, "Yes!" (www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-trump-campaign-protests-20160313-story.html)
That when you heard him tell one rally to confiscate a man's coat before throwing him out into the freezing cold, you said, "What a great guy!" (www.independent.co.uk/news/people/donald-trump-orders-protesters-coat-is-confiscated-and-he-is-sent-into-the-cold-a6802756.html)
That you have watched the parade of neo-Nazis and white supremacists with whom he curries favor, while refusing to condemn outright Nazis, and you have said, "Thumbs up!" (www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/08/why-cant-trump-just-condemn-nazis/567320/)
That you hear him unable to talk to foreign dignitaries without insulting their countries and demanding that they praise his electoral win, you said, "That's the way I want my President to be." (www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-insult-foreign-countries-leaders_n_59dd2769e4b0b26332e76d57)
That you have watched him remove expertise from all layers of government in favor of people who make money off of eliminating protections in the industries they're supposed to be regulating and you have said, "What a genius!" (www.politico.com/agenda/story/2017/12/29/138-trump-policy-changes-2017-000603)
That you have heard him continue to profit from his businesses, in part by leveraging his position as President, to the point of overcharging the Secret Service for space in the properties he owns, and you have said, "That's smart!" (www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2018-03-05/how-is-donald-trump-profiting-from-the-presidency-let-us-count-the-ways)
That you have heard him say that it was difficult to help Puerto Rico because it was in the middle of water and you have said, "That makes sense." (www.washingtonpost.com/news/politics/wp/2017/09/26/the-very-big-ocean-between-here-and-puerto-rico-is-not-a-perfect-excuse-for-a-lack-of-aid/)
That you have seen him start fights with every country from Canada to New Zealand while praising Russia and quote, "falling in love" with the dictator of North Korea, and you have said, "That's statesmanship!" (www.cnn.com/2019/07/02/politics/donald-trump-dictators-kim-jong-un-vladimir-putin/index.html)
That Trump separated children from their families and put them in cages, managed to lose track of 1500 kids, has opened a tent city incarceration camp in the desert in Texas - he explains that they’re just “animals” - and you say, “Well, OK then.” (www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/more-5-400-children-split-border-according-new-count-n1071791)
That you have witnessed all the thousand and one other manifestations of corruption and low moral character and outright animalistic rudeness and contempt for you, the working American voter, and you still show up grinning and wearing your MAGA hats and threatening to beat up anybody who says otherwise. (www.americanprogress.org/issues/democracy/reports/2018/06/04/451570/confronting-cost-trumps-corruption-american-families/)

What you don't get, Trump supporters, is that our succumbing to frustration and shaking our heads, thinking of you as stupid, may very well be wrong and unhelpful, but it's also...hear me...charitable.

Because if you're NOT stupid, we must turn to other explanations, and most of them are less flattering.

I agree with your points but not calling Trump voters thick. I know quite a few Americans who voted Trump and I wouldn't describe them as thick. Yes, I absolutely think they're wrong, but not stupid. I don't like the current division I see at the moment and left and right calling each other names doesn't help. It just adds to the rather scary toxicity I see everywhere.
The Americans I know who voted Trump don't particularly like him but think he's best for America. They've seen prices rocket under the Democrats and people struggle. They've seen a decline in their country and want it to be great again. Americans are generally more patriotic than Brits so regaining their sense of pride is important. They've been taught to fear immigrants so that's another big issue for them.
Another thing to bear in mind is that Americans are generally more conservative and Christian than Brits. I know many Americans and Jesus will usually come up in conversation at some point. The women I know are anti-abortion so won't be put off by any suggestion that Trump is happy for states to make it illegal. They see Trump as the candidate who will most protect and defend their conservative, Christian values.
It's a different mindset, a different way of seeing the world.
I personally see his presidency as an absolute disaster. He is already ditching the climate deal, and increasing the cost of medications. I find it all scary.

In times of economic uncertainty people are anxious about their security, and the way we deal with that as a race has always been scapegoating. It has to be someone’s fault.

Poor Americans couldn’t possible be poor because elderly, rich, white men have all the power and are giving themselves and their friends massive tax breaks whilst everyone else flounders - must be the Mexicans. On MN, it’s trans people. It couldn’t possibly be that elderly, rich, white men are eroding our rights with their poor decision making and institutional misogyny. Must be trans people needing the loo.

What Trump does is really quite clever bullying in its way. He is the problem. But by going all out against minorities who can’t fight back on that kind of global platform, he’s giving everyone a focus for all the anxiety and fear that’s generated by him in the first place.

What is your argument exactly?

CaveMum · 21/01/2025 08:57

I think Dominic Sandbrook summed it up best on election night in November. Most people, rightly or wrongly, don’t care about politics and the wider implications of voting a certain way. They care about what affects them directly.

Also, why are those who oppose Trump referred to as, 'liberals' what does that word even mean, to them? Being a 'liberal' seems to me to involve sneering or denigrating those who hold different views, whilst they think their own views are morally and intellectually superior.

If you consider yourself a liberal, can you explain what it means to you.

Huckyfell · 21/01/2025 09:53

Ok, why do people in the UK support trump..?

  1. "the US Government will only recognise 2 sexes, Male and Female.
  1. E.Vs, "we will revoke the electric vehicle mandate, saving our auto industry.... in other words you'll be able to buy the car of your choice"

For a huge % of people these 2 simple things are what they want to hear.

American here . I live here . Your comment is ridiculous rubbish . Trump will not accomplish much else but stoke hate and divide our country even further than it is . He never came close to finishing the wall but he did make the USA more racist !

Indeed. I think a more pertinent question is : why did 11 million ( or whatever) people , who voted Democrat in 2020 , just stay at home this time? I mean apart from the late nomination of Harris. Democrats must take practical steps to help poorer people. Bread and butter stuff. Woke didn't win or lose the election ....nobody cares about it enough either way.

How arrogant. I imagine you to be insufferably smug in real life and I bet when you declare your pearls of wisdom to others, they are eye rolling you behind your back. You will not be as clever as you think you are.

What an amusing post.

I agree that the Democrats should have taken a universal improvement plan that focused on low income and should have backed away from Identity, it was a trap.
However, even if they had taken a universal approach to help all the poor, all their measures would probably have been blocked by the Right wing senators anyway who believe in low tax and if you’re poor, it’s your fault.

I think the Identity stuff is a red herring at the end of the day. Fundamentally Trump’s government all is about helping billionaires get the low tax oligarchy they want and that’s how America is going to end up, similar to Russia today. There will be super rich elites and lots more poor people with crappy schools, infrastructure, medical care and their wellbeing metrics won’t improve.

AlisonDonut · 21/01/2025 10:43

Trump, speaks off pat for hours on Joe Rogan.
Harris, couldn't speak for a minute without a teleprompter.

Yet people who prefer the former are the stupid ones?

JennyTals · 21/01/2025 10:44

Intend to think anyone that likes him is trolling !

or maybe they are ok with rape culture ?

They struggle to understand that supporting him is contrary to our own financial interests, this time around especially.

Because they are racist
