Why do people in the UK support Trump?

I've even seen MAGA flags (ok, maybe the owner was American). But Trump's focus and ONLY thing he cares about is America. He couldn't give a shit about the UK and would happily see the UK in ruins if it benefited America.

At this point, I very much wish we were. I would take the UK being absorbed as the 51st state.

Hope you enjoy al the dead kiddie bodies in your schools then !

I’m a proper leftie, generally Lib Dem or Green but have voted strategically labour when required to keep the tories out. I hate Trump.

However, I think the election in America played into a lot of biases that people have - look at how he won against Hillary. People don’t generally trust women, much less a women of colour, and a lot of traditional democrats felt betrayed by the cover up on Biden’s health.

I think people also feel that with Putin and other leaders around the world (Asia, Middle East) that we have a better chance of geopolitical safety if it’s a US leader those leaders can at least talk to.

I wouldn’t have voted for him if in the US but that’s my understanding of the thinking. There were traditional liberal voters who moved towards him, there will have been reasons and you can’t just assume people are daft.

I am American and I certainly don’t know or didn’t hear of any left wing liberals voting for Trump . He appealed to those less educated and of lower income that fell for his grift . He and Melania somehow thought it was ok to release a bit coin just before the inauguration . He uses the appeal that his business acumen will bring America forward with little proof of any of his ventures were successful . Yet they believe him !

I’d say Obama and Biden were far more anti-British than Trump.

Most British people consider Trump a joke. Personally, I think he’s awful, but I have grown to hate the smug, sneering, Guardian-reading left so much that I was pleased he won. The thought of Owen Jones or Stewart Lee or Will Self being upset makes me happy. The left dominate the BBC, the universities, the media, the arts, and the publishing industry, and they are doing all they can to destroy my identity. The whole idea of Englishness and Britishness are now toxic thanks to them.

American here . I live here . Your comment is ridiculous rubbish . Trump will not accomplish much else but stoke hate and divide our country even further than it is . He never came close to finishing the wall but he did make the USA more racist !

Blueeyedmale · 21/01/2025 03:44

If they like it that much they could always go stateside.

Talks of grabbing women by the private parts.
Completely disgusting comments about his own daughter.
Telling a 12 year old Paris Hilton she's hot and he will date her in a few years.

For all our political problems this country is going through at the moment,I'd take that over trump anyday.

The comment you're responding to has far more insight than yours tbh.

People want to see an end to all the woke nonsense and seeing Trump start to destroy it in the US gives people in the UK some hope.

It's absolutely this. The longer we ridicule people for voting (far) right, the longer they'll keep gaining power. It'll be the uk next. Worrying times ahead.

Insulting voters doesn't have the effect people think it does. This is a woke pushback.

Terraarts · 21/01/2025 05:01

So we can watch some entertaining 'reality' (and I use that word advisedly) tv in a 'light firework, stand well back' kinda way... oh, and morbid fascination, mais oui... Personally I'm hoping that he'll kickstart a revolution that gets people to fall out of love with that patriarchal, hierarchical societal construct known as 'democratic capitalism' and usher in a new egalitarian, fairer sharing kinda societal construct - rather than this dog eat dog one we have now, where unkind, selfish, psychopathic behaviour is rewarded... Funny, even though in terms of the history of humankind 'democratic capitalism' is but a blip in time, people find it easier to imagine total world annihilation than an alternative... Yep, I'm all for the dangerous, disgusting individual myself... right, off to buy some popcorn... ✌🏾❣️

Absolutely this . It feels like common sense is returning . Even though his delivery is dreadful it's nice to hear a politician put their own country first and stand up for common sense values .

I've never once seen anyone or any house with a maga item in the UK.

I don't really understand why people in this country get so worked up about a democratically elected president in another country. It's not our business really. I'm of the opinion all politicians are slippery self serving power hungry liars anyway. The democrats as an alternative are certainly no angels either.

What happens in the US has a huge impact on the UK and the rest of the world. It's the most powerful country in the world. Of course people should care.

We don't live in isolated little boxes (as much as Trump would like to think we can).

This. Calling people thick, evil, whatever for holding different political beliefs is the biggest part of why we are so divided and the likes of Trump are gaining power, yet people come onto these threads and proudly do so over and over. YOU, and your public representatives, are the problem. YOU are why this is happening. Baffling that you can't see it.

Lyannaa · 21/01/2025 06:47

The people in the UK who like Trump are usually the same people who decided to convince themselves that Covid was a hoax because they were too childish to cope with the reality of a pandemic which stopped them doing what they wanted to do.

PeachyKeane · 21/01/2025 06:50

Frankinator · 20/01/2025 19:55

People sneer at Trump supporters the same way they sneer at people who voted Brexit. And we'll continue to have a problem with popularism whilst that continues to happen. It's crucial that the left start to think about and appreciate what makes / has made people vote that way instead of dismissing them as thick or stupid.
(I say this as someone who is a "woke leftie" and who couldn't be more pro-EU)

This. You might be surprised by the number of people you know who quietly support him whilst pretending not to tbh

On what grounds do you claim this? Most of the people I know who like Trump are elderly and took the pandemic beyond seriously. My lovely old Dad for example washed every item that came into the house for months and made us all stay in the garden when we came to visit Grin

Wow. 1st prize for disingenuous nonsense. You think Trump is 'awful' oh of course you do. And you give yourself away in the last sentence.

This isn't a trial, I don't have to prove anything. It's a discussion forum. The people who decided it was a hoax usually started off scared to death of catching Covid and going into denial was a coping mechanism. So they are not so different really.

Lovelysummerdays · 21/01/2025 06:56

I had this conversation at work and there is genuine support for Trump. Apparently he says what people think.

Wowzers!!!!!!

Leaving the Paris Agreement on Day One - how is that common sense??

Selfish, greedy, power- hungry with no regard for the planet or the USA. It will be an ongoing shitshow.

These threads don’t want to know why, more a chance to fling some insults. And on it goes

You’re right you don’t have to prove anything. You’re perfectly free to keep making wild, sweeping unsubstantiated claims about “people” and their behaviour on a mass scale, based purely on your own individual political beliefs and narrow experience as much and for as long as you like 😊

AlisonDonut · 21/01/2025 07:00

I don't like him but I'd rather him than the Democrats due to their abysmal policies and practices.

Insulting people for using their right to vote instead of asking the Democrats to sort themselves out will just push more people that way.

Cluelessbee · 21/01/2025 07:01

ruethewhirl · 20/01/2025 18:44

Because they're thick.

Honestly, I think this sums it up. I understand the concerns of people who voted for him, but to think Trump is the answer means you must be incredibly dim, gullible and incapable of critical thinking.

littleblackcat247 · 21/01/2025 07:02

@Abhannmor your logic is very skewed indeed.

The reason he got voted in was because people voted for him. Not because a few 'lefties' called his followers thick. Mind you - if it quacks like a duck

I loath Trump, but take enormous pleasure in hearing non-Trump supporters wailing and gnashing their teeth.

I’ve never actually seen someone wail and gnash their teeth.

What @Seamless11 @Adamante and @Fordian said 🎯👏

I wonder how many people on this have actually spent time listening to alternative points of view, podcasts, interviews etc? I'm no Trump fan, I marched against him first time round, but absolutely understand why people voted for him this time...

I think that was meant for me wasn’t it even though you got the name wrong… then implied that I was thick? 😉

Yes, I know how the voting process works, I also know that calling anyone who doesn’t like your policies or vote for you, “a basket of deplorables” and working tirelessly to tar everyone who questions your policies/political beliefs as stupid, racist, fascist is not likely to bring them rallying to your cause. Does name calling, calling them evil for disagreeing and lying about people’s motives routinely work out well for you in your personal life? Why would it be any better on a larger, society wide scale? People are driven away by that behaviour and so here we are. Next stop Farage no doubt.
