Why do people in the UK support Trump?

I've even seen MAGA flags (ok, maybe the owner was American). But Trump's focus and ONLY thing he cares about is America. He couldn't give a shit about the UK and would happily see the UK in ruins if it benefited America.

Because they see themselves as edgy disrupters when in actual fact they're low intelligence idiots.

Like my SILs partner....

Cheepcheepcheep · 20/01/2025 19:35

I’m a proper leftie, generally Lib Dem or Green but have voted strategically labour when required to keep the tories out. I hate Trump.

However, I think the election in America played into a lot of biases that people have - look at how he won against Hillary. People don’t generally trust women, much less a women of colour, and a lot of traditional democrats felt betrayed by the cover up on Biden’s health.

I think people also feel that with Putin and other leaders around the world (Asia, Middle East) that we have a better chance of geopolitical safety if it’s a US leader those leaders can at least talk to.

I wouldn’t have voted for him if in the US but that’s my understanding of the thinking. There were traditional liberal voters who moved towards him, there will have been reasons and you can’t just assume people are daft.

Cheepcheepcheep · 20/01/2025 19:37

Second post to add two things:

  1. this assumes there wasn’t fraud in this election, which I can’t rule out
  2. the world is in a tight spiral towards its destruction and people who vote will be caught in that, so there’s an argument about rational choices.

People want to see an end to all the woke nonsense and seeing Trump start to destroy it in the US gives people in the UK some hope.

I know one guy walking around with a maga baseball cap..not American..loves Trump...I often wonder if he thinks the UK is part of the States the way he goes on. Spends hours watching you tube videos..

Stella Braverman was wearing one yesterday! 😬

You definitely sound like a leftie 🙄

I do wonder how much of what he spouts will come to fruition. Woke stuff, gender, immigration etc..and if his famed 'wall' will make a reappearance in reality. How much will quietly disappear, and how much will legally be challenged and scrapped? How much time will he get to enact these activities?

Can’t imagine why anyone here would support him with the tariffs he’s going to hit the country with

Yeah, I said this to a relative yesterday who said, no, we'll be better off with Trump at the helm 🙄

ssd · 20/01/2025 19:46

Only one person at work has said she likes Trump and she is the most racist, bigoted person i know.

Musk and Trump just admitted musk had a huge influence with his billions for the election. I’m not so sure he was democratically elected. It was a close call. It’s all weird. I agree democrats need to get their house in order but the way MAGA are behaving screams cult. It’s different to last time . They’ve lost the plot and are obsessed to the point it reminds me of how tyrants I’ve gained power.

The way both republicans and democrats campaigns are privately funded is always very suspect. For Musk in bed with the Republicans you had Hollywood stars in bed with the Democrats and we all know about the upcoming scandal surrounding Hollywood.

GauntJudy · 20/01/2025 19:55

I think because he has a very black and white stance on things, whereas many politicians tiptoe around issues.

Ultimately many people want to maintain traditional values, look after their own and latch onto optimism.

I think he's a dangerous moron who will help the rich get richer while everyday people are distracted by "wins" around gender politics and freedom of speech.

Frankinator · 20/01/2025 19:55

People sneer at Trump supporters the same way they sneer at people who voted Brexit. And we'll continue to have a problem with popularism whilst that continues to happen. It's crucial that the left start to think about and appreciate what makes / has made people vote that way instead of dismissing them as thick or stupid.
(I say this as someone who is a "woke leftie" and who couldn't be more pro-EU)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/01/2025 20:03

I have never met anyone in the UK or Ireland who thinks he is anything other than a sign that democracy can be ugly and disappointing.

I’d say Obama and Biden were far more anti-British than Trump.

Most British people consider Trump a joke. Personally, I think he’s awful, but I have grown to hate the smug, sneering, Guardian-reading left so much that I was pleased he won. The thought of Owen Jones or Stewart Lee or Will Self being upset makes me happy. The left dominate the BBC, the universities, the media, the arts, and the publishing industry, and they are doing all they can to destroy my identity. The whole idea of Englishness and Britishness are now toxic thanks to them.

SirChenjins · 20/01/2025 20:13

The ones I know who have voiced their support for the orange loon have also voiced racist, misogynistic, disabilist views in the past and bemoan the face that they’re prevented from doing so in polite company or at work.

I loath Trump, but take enormous pleasure in hearing non-Trump supporters wailing and gnashing their teeth.

Are you a masochist? I can't understand why you would enjoy that.

Fordian · 20/01/2025 20:58

Trump represents the zeitgeist.

I think we in the UK are merely 2 years out of synch. I think if you ran the UK elections today, Reform would do really well.

We spent all the post-war years believing that eventually the entire planet would embrace the universal rule of law, democracy, equality etc, following the western liberal model.

Turns out the world is lurching towards strongman dictatorships.

Meanwhile the west's response was wringing its hands about the mass immigration, legal and illegal of peoples who do not share western, liberal values; a destruction of the value of blue collar jobs, now done by machines or said immigrants who will do it for less and more unsafely; the promotion of minority interests that destroy others' rights, a growing wealth gap, a crumbling of public infrastructure and service, that, with the best bleeding heart liberalism is partially caused by mass not well-integrated immigration.

They see 2 tier policing, they see unfairness.

And they're told they're knuckle dragging bigots for pointing this stuff out.

Trump's campaign like those of the right wing in Europe have played on this discontent. And the Dems couldn't have run a worse one if they'd tried.

In the crudest terms, what event brought the ME war to a standstill? It wasn't us allowing men into female toilets.

Yes. I have British (now American) friends in California who are utterly devastated about Trump. They hate it when I point out that at least there won’t be rapists in women’s prisons any more, or boys on their daughters’ sports teams, or 12 year old girls having their breasts amputated.

I’m a lefty and I loathe Trump, but wasn’t too keen on alternative either.

The USA has the president it voted for.

Spouting the usual rubbish about how he won because people don't want a woman, or God forbid a woman of colour to be in charge 😴

lljkk · 20/01/2025 21:59

There's a windup merchant in the office who apparently ordered a MAGA hat. This got announced loudly by his mate. Most of the staff are lefties. The WuM enjoys provoking the bear, but he kind of believes a lot of the propaganda... he's a big fan of Joe Rogan & on 8 October 2023 was demanding that Israel carpet bomb Gaza (got his wish, I suppose). Proudly voted for Brexit...

I asked for politics to be banned from office on 8 November '24 & strangely enough, everyone has gone along with it. We connect & chat fine on lots of non political topics. I can only say "Nowt as Queer as Folk."

HopeForAPeacefulWorld · 20/01/2025 22:15

As an American, I can proudly say that I did NOT vote for dictator trump. He wants to control every aspect of the lives of Americans and influence other countries to do his bidding as well. Having billionaires on his team will make all things easier for him. I hope we still have a democracy in 4 years.

HopeForAPeacefulWorld · 20/01/2025 22:40

Trump recreated his mugshot pose for his inauguration picture. Well....he IS a convicted criminal.

Abhannmor · 20/01/2025 23:08

I think a lot of people have struggled since the Recession in 08. Then Brexit , Covid and the Ukraine war fucked things up royally. When people are depressed and can't see anything changing they look to a leader who projects strength and offers nice simple solutions to everything. A father figure if you will. I know that looks bonkers written down!
Having said that, for everyone I know who supports him there are 2 or 3 who despise him.

ruethewhirl · 21/01/2025 00:10

CaveMum · 20/01/2025 18:50

I think Trump is an absolute idiot and wish that the Republicans had grown a spine and taken him to pieces during the January 6th committee hearings so that Trump 2.0 would have been a practical impossibility.

That said it is comments like the one I have quoted that show exactly why people will keep voting for politicians (in the loosest possible terms) like Trump, Farage and Johnson. Sneering at people for the way they vote rather than taking the time to listen to their concerns and taking steps to address them will just continue the pattern of left/left-leaning political parties having their backsides handed to them.

I hear you, but I stand by what I said. I'm sure that for some inexplicable reason Trump appeals to some intelligent people as will, but most of his rhetoric plays directly to the thick and gullible and I believe they make up the bulk of his fan base.
