Some Trump supporters already feeling voter's remorse

I wonder why, what particular thing made them change their minds, at this late date, after just a week.

Of course, it confirms my opinion of the stupidity of Trumpers, that they're so ignorant that they imagine you can change your vote after the fact.

Exactly. Their manifesto last year proposed exempting front line healthcare workers on less than £50k from income tax. On what planet would that be feasible?

On a planet where health care workers were valued and not treated badly so they don't emigrate to Australia or New Zealand and the NHS isn't constantly in crisis and having to pay bank workers masses more money to cover shifts.

Well he voted against WFC but wasn't an MP to vote against 2 child cap but he did make it known at the time he thought UK children should be put ahead of money spent on immigration, foreign aid and green policies.

Farage has only held one surgery for his constituents since being elected. He's spent more time hanging around Trump than in his constituency and has made it known that he admires Putin.

He barely showed up as an MEP and has had several financial scandals. His MPs are dreadful and several candidates were dropped due to far right and racist affiliations.

Why do you want someone like that to lead the country and why do you believe anything he said after Brexit?

On Planet LaLa. Where does he think he’s going to find the money for the majority of the country’s biggest workforce not to pay tax? He must have a secret forest of magic money trees.

Farage. Such a great idea to get rid of immigrants. Then we can pass a law like Florida, to fill the empty jobs by making child labour great again. The bill even allows employers to schedule 14 and 15 year olds for overnight shifts. Just think how much the parents can save by not needing bedrooms for them!

Florida debates lifting some child labor laws to fill jobs vacated by undocumented immigrants | CNN Business

Florida has been working for years to crack down on employers that hire undocumented immigrants. But that presented a problem for businesses in the state that are desperate for workers to fill low-wage and often undesirable jobs.

The number of child labor violations in Florida has nearly tripled in recent years, according to US Department of Labor statistics.

Which is always a sign of a progressive society. Though to its credit, Florida has some of the strictest child marriage laws in the States.

If you’d been raised in the US under the idea of a democratic society, I think to live under Trump the pussy grabber would be humiliating. I feel sorry for them.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 28/03/2025 17:00

(And Farages wife is German. He took advantage and got an EU passport. Hypocrisy rules with him. Rules are for the little people, not him and his ilk. Vote for him at your peril.

I think many Labour voters have voters remorse.

Labour voter here, and no voter remorse. The Tories were already a shitshow and getting worse, so they wouldn't have been any better.

Farridge's two wives were both German, as are his kids.

I thought his first wife was Irish.

And racism. I know someone who voted solely because he was going to get rid off forrins. Even though she was a former refugee. Maybe that counts as stupid...

I agree! But, yes, also, maybe that could come under my initial heading of "stupidity"?

I'm not sure if there's anything inherently wrong with wanting any societal balance to stay the same, and worrying about shifts, whether of race, nationality, gender, education level, whatever. But I suspect that some of the urge to "cleanse" the country also comes from stupidity. For instance, many Trumpers believe something that is untrue: That immigrants commit more crimes. If they weren't so stupid, they'd know this was untrue.

Unfortunately, it's also true that the idea of America as a melting pot has faded. I don't think that people wish to quickly become Americanized in the way they used to.

You may be right, but at least Johnson was smarter and more experienced than Trump, who's an ignoramus.

True. Johnson was smart enough to act like an ignorant buffoon and Trump is one. I suppose Johnson had to in order to be able to do things like completely reverse his stance on Brexit. But the fact is, the people liked it in both cases, or enough of them did to hand them power. Hopefully Johnson isn't eyeing up Trump's comeback...

What a great world.

I'd be surprised.
I think Trump, like Brexit, is a cult. People would burn their own house down before charging their mind.
Oh, and any damage if the fault of everything and everybody else.

I think you're probably right about both being "cult" like. But why? I don't get it.

People relate to him. What happened was people were fed up with the status quo. It didn't seem to matter who was in power, nothing much changed.

Trump was the wild card because Clinton just represented more of the same. He connected to the working class and promised to make their lives better. He was going to rebuild American industry and keep out immigrants.

'I'm gonna build a wall and I'm gonna bring back American production.' This was particularly appealing to those in the rust belt.

This time round Trump promised to MAGA and he was gonna round up illegals, keep women safe, bring down the price of food and fuel, bring back jobs, get rid off discrimination against white men and stop the woke agenda.

He promised to fix every single thing wrong with America and people want to believe that.

Let’s see how quickly they turn on him when the economy is in the toilet. It won’t take long. The markets have already crashed.

He has already countered that. It's a dose of medicine ie suck it up for the time being.

Resentment of the Others (feared by the white Midwest Americans) doing too well, according to this. They see this as a zero sum game, so minorities doing well economically to them means they are being cheated out of something.

It's why Trump uses the same language on tariffs

I lived in America in the 1980s when Japan was the big boggy man. I remember a widely reported survey at the time with the question -
Would you rather -
A. The American economy grew at 2% and the Japanese grew at 2.5%
Or
B. The American economy shrunk at 2% and the Japanese economy shrunk at 2.5%.

Most answered B by a big margin so maybe Trump supporters are happy to tank their own economy as long as other countries suffer more ?

Omigod, yes, @marmaladeandpeanutbutter, it's embarrassing and infuriating. And by now, the pussy-grabbing is the least of it. How about country-grabbing?
You have no idea how bad it was in the first term, to wake up in the morning, and reach for the radio for a weather report, but cringing to brace yourself for news of a new disgrace.

There were debates, TV shows, Radio shows and newspaper articles for a long time before the referendum. Everyone was aware the referendum was taking place and what the choice was.

Everyone was talking about it; people fell out about it. The facts were there should anyone wish to know. We've never had so much information at our fingertips.

People were very open about what a stupid idea it was but people argued until they were blue in the face that they were right. A lot of people voted against their own interests and wouldn't listen to reason.

If they chose not to vote or to listen to reason, there's not much other people can do.

I don’t think it was made clear enough what the benefits of being in the EU were and what the drawbacks of leaving would be. I voted to remain because I was scared of the prospect of recession and I love European culture, but I did not fully understand about the problems Brexit would cause. For example I only really understood British people would lose the right to live and work in Europe and that students would lose the right to study in Europe after it happened. I wasn’t clear about the problems Brexit would create for Ireland/Northern Ireland etc etc. I watch the news and read the papers at least as much as the average person and I promise you all the repercussions of voting for Brexit were not spelt out clearly.
