Really shocked by the comments welcoming this even further lurch to the extreme right.
It’s not good news for women

Shouldn’t worry. They’ll have at least 2 more leaders before the next election. Opposition has no power.

Shadowmooth · 02/11/2024 11:47

Kemi is extreme. She is mean and not many people who work with her have a good word to say about her. What was the quote - she’d cross the street to bite your ankles even if you weren’t goading her. And that was from her ally. I thought the days of angry and mean politicians were over.

plus her views on disabled, pregnant and autistic people are horrific

MotherOfVizslas · 02/11/2024 11:47

Fab news!

Plenty do have a good word to say about her which is why she got the backing of many MPs who have worked with her

What are those views, please?

Well, at least now they remain utterly inelectable for the foreseeable future...

Don't count your chickens ...

I refer you to my post above re the angry black women trope.

I think her main job will be to head off the rise of Reform. Does that mean she will go further Right and introduce Reform type policies to keep the wavering Tories in the fold?

That is what I will be watching.

I don't think so. I still see the reform vote as majority protest votes. I know people who voted reform who are no way far right, solidly center, but just had nowhere else to go.

shockeditellyou · 02/11/2024 11:49

I find it really interesting that the right wing, anti immigrant party has a much better track record of putting women, immigrants and minorities into positions of power. Does anyone know why that is?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/11/2024 11:49

Suo · 02/11/2024 11:43

I have never voted conservative. Would be interested to know why she is considered to be "of the right" of the party nd to have"hard right views". From what I have seen she is a conservative who advocates for personal responsibility, small government and low regulation? Seems to be typical Tory stuff?

It's interesting that the term 'far-right' has become so embedded in general discourse and used to describe pretty much anything that is not left-wing or centrist. Still not quite sure how it happened, but it's been very effective at stigmatising many people. Got concerns about the levels of immigration? You're far-right. Got concerns about the growth of trans ideology? You're far-right. Got concerns about economic impact of net-zero? You're far-right... You're not just just right-wing, but far-right...

Starseeking · 02/11/2024 11:49

I hate to say it (due to her being a Black woman) but this is such terrible news. Prepare yourselves guys because the UK is about to lurch even further to the right, given the green light by a Black woman #notallskinfolkarekinfolk 😔😔😔

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 02/11/2024 11:49

@amigafan2003 , there’s that little bubble again so out of touch with the majority of people in this country. You would find one of the Tory wets more appealing but you wouldn’t vote for them anyway. Kemi polled so highly I think many thought it was a forgone conclusion or didn’t vote because they would be happy with either. As she so rightly pointed out her job now is to unite the party and bring home those who defected to Reform.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 02/11/2024 11:42

I think she'll make a formidable opponent in PMQ's against Starmer.

Why? Labour have a majority of 174, so for the next 5 years they can do whatever they want, having learned from Boris that PMQ is just a panto and any questions can just be batted away or ignored.

After 14 years of mis-management of the UK economy the Conservatives can hardly start criticising the party trying to put things right.

As for her personal debating style, Badenoch seems to wake up angry and things just spiral downwards from there as the day progresses and people offer any views that differ from her own.

Bloom15 · 02/11/2024 11:49

cheezncrackers · 02/11/2024 11:24

Well I like her. She's a strong, eloquent woman who has a record of standing up for women.

How has she stood up for women?!

If you are a woman on benefits she thinks you are scum. She is vile

quantumbutterfly · 02/11/2024 11:50

Biscuitsneeded · 02/11/2024 11:25

She has some very peculiar and worrying views that will alienate a lot of people. The Tories' only chance was to go with Cleverly or Tugendhat, and they blew it.

Cleverly? The one who joked about drugging his wife!

Kemi would have been my choice, I like what I've seen so will watch with interest. I trust her more than Starmer & Rayner, the gruesome twosome.

Check out her voting record. She hasn't got a record of standing up for women. Or children. The only group she consistently stands up for ( according to her voting record) is landlords.

Gettingbysomehow · 02/11/2024 11:50

Well with the tories history of back stabbing and revolving door leaders I give her 6 months.
That was the one reason I didn't vote for them in the election, you didn't know who was going to be prime minister in 6 months time.

Rummly · 02/11/2024 11:51

It’s in the Guardian. It’s obviously true. 🙄

Women and minorities can have a very passionate right wing anti immigrant views and therefore they will succeed in a relevant party

Kemi vs Starmer is a tantalising prospect.

I think she will wipe the floor with him - he’s not quick on his feet. It took him a while to remember he was PM and not Sunak.

Well, we'll see.

She's only been voted in for 10 minutes. Time will tell.

FfsBrian · 02/11/2024 11:53

Well done Kemi!!

ChannelFiveDrama · 02/11/2024 11:55

For those on the right of the Tory party she's probably their best choice. But many on here champion her on the single issue of women's rights. Her voting record suggests she's got some pretty regressive views (and the votes where she was absent are also interesting).
