I think she's the best of the two for the Tories going forward. Jenrick would have taken them down a very dangerous path in my opinion.

EasterIssland · 02/11/2024 11:56

Hope she’s never the prime minister

Laylay100 · 02/11/2024 11:56

So we just ignoring all the vile things she has said....

The first black female leader of a mainstream political party. Quite a thing.

Indeed. So the tories have now had 3 female prime ministers 4 female party leaders, one of whom is black. Unless I’ve forgotten someone?
And labour are crowing about having the first female chancellor. In a party that’s only been led by middle aged white men. Pfffft! So what!

pizzaHeart · 02/11/2024 11:52

Women and minorities can have a very passionate right wing anti immigrant views and therefore they will succeed in a relevant party

They can also have very passionate left wing views, and yet don’t succeed to the same degree in the Labour Party.

I totally agree & hope she does well. However, I feel she will be some sort of sacrificial lamb!

quantumbutterfly · 02/11/2024 11:57

lifeturnsonadime · 02/11/2024 11:26

Great stuff. She will be a robust opposition leader which is what is needed.

And a black woman which is truly amazing, let's see if this bodes well for the USA to do the same and elect a black woman on Tuesday.

Erm...I hope they vote for a candidate based on more than identity politics. Kemi is an intelligent, thoughtful, tenacious person.I hope she manages to effectively lead her party.
Kamala on the other hand....not so sure, but hey, she's not Trump..... or Biden.

taxguru · 02/11/2024 11:57

shockeditellyou · 02/11/2024 11:49

I find it really interesting that the right wing, anti immigrant party has a much better track record of putting women, immigrants and minorities into positions of power. Does anyone know why that is?

"Immigrants" aren't all the same. Some immigrants will be anti immigration and racist themselves. Likewise some women have "anti women" views. Not all minorities share the same pro-minority views. Some of the worst racists I've known have been "coloured" themselves.

I also think that the proportion of people who support anti-racism AND support women's rights AND support minority rights AND support immigration is a lot smaller than people are led to believe.

Assuming everyone of a particular "group" is a homogenous identical mass with identical views is a big mistake.

Indeed Rummly - historic in fact

I'd rather they were competent than historic

how the hell else can political things get worse??

Kemi is extreme. She is mean and not many people who work with her have a good word to say about her. What was the quote - she’d cross the street to bite your ankles even if you weren’t goading her. And that was from her ally. I thought the days of angry and mean politicians were over.

plus her views on disabled, pregnant and autistic people are horrific

Wait til you find out what Labour think about old people

Dontcallmescarface · 02/11/2024 11:58

Pat888 · 02/11/2024 11:40

She said something about men paying to bring up their own children (after separation) - in an article in the Sunday Times so I’m getting the flags out.

Edited

She also said that maternity pay was "excessive" so I'd keep those flags in the drawer if I were you.

Boltonb · 02/11/2024 11:59

Its so irrelevant, it’s almost like a competition of which fish has the fastest motorbike.

Nobody in their right mind is going to vote Tory for a long long time, and she certainly won’t still be the leader by the time they pose any sort of reasonable opposition to Labour.

Lifeomars · 02/11/2024 11:59

I very much doubt that she will be leading them into the next election. She is gaffe prone, does not seem to have any powers of self reflection, she will try to out bigot Reform rather than look at the Tories did so badly at the election. Starmer didn't win because the electorate were enthused about Labour, he won because most people could not face another 5 years of corruption, incompetence and chaos. The Tories need to do some real soul searching about the direction they went in especially under Johnson, Truss and Sunak but they won't because they are not made that way.

Brananan · 02/11/2024 11:59

The Guardian write up about her is a bit pathetic tbh. This is one of the worst things they can find to say about her:

"During the campaign, Badenoch made much of her engineering background, arguing that it allowed her to view problems in an analytical way, unburdened by ideology. She is not wrong to call herself an engineer, but her undergraduate degree and master’s, from the University of Sussex, were in computer systems engineering."

Screamingabdabz · 02/11/2024 11:59

Quercus30 · 02/11/2024 11:50

Check out her voting record. She hasn't got a record of standing up for women. Or children. The only group she consistently stands up for ( according to her voting record) is landlords.

She’s one of the few brave politicians in an infinitely long line of cowards and misogynists who has stood up to the TRA rhetoric that public institutions have been surreally captured by. That in itself is a significant (some might argue the most significant) step for women’s rights.

It’s not about the views themselves, it’s about the fact a party which is historically seen as more hostile to minorities is better at putting those minorities in a position of authority.

Pregnant...people? No wonder you're not keen.

Is this thread being overtaken by Conservative HQ or bots? The comments praising her are wild. You have to have a lot of money to think you can insulate yourself from the policies she would innact.

If you

-need healthcare
-have a disabled child
-have a baby or adopt
-experience depression
-want to be able to access help if your treated unfairly in the workplace
-want to have schools which have teachers in them
-need social care when you’re older

and so many more….. We should be terrified and angry by this selection.

I notice all the women of colour lumped together there.
