I think they have just made themselves considerably more electable by selecting Kemi.

She has some very peculiar and worrying views that will alienate a lot of people. The Tories' only chance was to go with Cleverly or Tugendhat, and they blew it.

EasternStandard · 02/11/2024 11:25

Screamingabdabz · 02/11/2024 11:22

Wow. Historic moment whatever your politics. Well done her and I hope the Tory party support her. The country needs a strong opposition.

Agree well done to Kemi, she’ll be strong in holding Labour to account

lifeturnsonadime · 02/11/2024 11:26

Great stuff. She will be a robust opposition leader which is what is needed.

And a black woman which is truly amazing, let's see if this bodes well for the USA to do the same and elect a black woman on Tuesday.

CitrusPocket · 02/11/2024 11:26

ImNunTheWiser · 02/11/2024 11:23

I hope she can be strong in holding the Labour Government to account. My initial feeling is she was the best candidate in that regard. It is extremely important, for everyone, left and right, that that happens. I never felt the Labour Party in opposition did that job well.

Agree with this.

showmethegin · 02/11/2024 11:26

Have I wandered into an alternate universe. She's absolutely vile. It's a bad thing for everyone that someone that holds the views she does is in parliament.

Lou7171 · 02/11/2024 11:27

cheezncrackers · 02/11/2024 11:24

Well I like her. She's a strong, eloquent woman who has a record of standing up for women.

Standing up for women? Are you kidding?

skippy67 · 02/11/2024 11:27

cheezncrackers · 02/11/2024 11:24

Well I like her. She's a strong, eloquent woman who has a record of standing up for women.

Did you miss her recent comments on maternity rights?

1dayatatime · 02/11/2024 11:27

Whilst a historical moment to have the first black leader of political party in the UK, I genuinely believe that her skin colour and sex were completely irrelevant in her selection by the Conservative Party- she was simply the best person for the job.

I think her age played a role positive (she has sufficient time until the next election to hone her skills) and negative (she's nor experienced enough etc).

Either way she's not a shy lass so at the very least this should make for some very entertaining PMQs!!

showmethegin · 02/11/2024 11:28

Quite @Lou7171

This is the woman that thinks maternity policy is too generous!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/11/2024 11:28

Suo · 02/11/2024 11:24

She is intelligent, analytical, tenacious and unafraid. She is not always very politically astute. She has the potential to be incredibly good.

Yes, apparently one of her biggest negatives is that’s she can be brittle and not very diplomatic, but this is definitely something that comes with experience.

I think she’s a good choice.

Suo · 02/11/2024 11:29

skippy67 · 02/11/2024 11:27

Did you miss her recent comments on maternity rights?

No, but I think possibly you misunderstood them?

Babadookinthewardrobe · 02/11/2024 11:20

I think they have just made themselves considerably more electable by selecting Kemi.

Turnout amongst the party was 72.8%.
If even Conservative party members aren't motivated to vote then heaven knows how they expect the electorate to be bothered.

cheezncrackers · 02/11/2024 11:24

Exactly that. As a Black woman myself I am delighted.

skippy67 · 02/11/2024 11:30

Suo · 02/11/2024 11:29

No, but I think possibly you misunderstood them?

Nope.

Kryten1958 · 02/11/2024 11:30

Diversity?
Labour talk the talk, the Conservatives walk the walk... again.

Absolutely the left should show absolute zero tolerance towards the intolerant right.

@showmethegin , she’s entitled to her views and maybe she has a point. Difficult to judge without hearing all the evidence.

GoodGollyMsMolly · 02/11/2024 11:31

Wooo I'm so happy for her. She has convictions, and like myself is a minority who's against woke DEI nonsense. And for all the bad rep the Conservatives get for being a racist party, they just elected a black, female leader because of what they believe she can deliver and not because of her identity. Britain is wayyy ahead of the US in this respect. Go Kemi!

CurlewKate · 02/11/2024 11:32

Well, that makes the lurch to the Right a little less lnevitable.

Greyrocked · 02/11/2024 11:32

Absolutely terrifying

skippy67 · 02/11/2024 11:33

I bet Frank Hester is delighted...

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/11/2024 11:33

I'm not a Tory but I do think that she is an interesting choice and will likely be a more effective leader than her three predecessors.

cheezncrackers · 02/11/2024 11:33

Lou7171 · 02/11/2024 11:27

Standing up for women? Are you kidding?

No, I'm not kidding. As Minister for Women and Equalities she stood up against the trans lobby to support women-only spaces, sex and biology against the usual screaming mob. I look forward to seeing her hold Labour to account in parliament.

GoodGollyMsMolly · 02/11/2024 11:34

CurlewKate · 02/11/2024 11:32

Well, that makes the lurch to the Right a little less lnevitable.

What is your definition of far right I'm curious?
