Just seen this and I swear they keep forgetting they won the election and are in power now

The constant gaffes and sixth form debate club politics are very embarrassing. I was ready for change, but fucking hell.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer speaking in front of a small crowd

Labour volunteers in US helping Harris 'in spare time', Keir Starmer says

The prime minister said volunteers from his party travelled to the US for "pretty much every" presidential election.

And BTW, brace yourselves. All the early metrics (voter registration, early voting turnout and the latest polling) point to a Trump win, so Labour, being supremely stupid, has aimed at the "king" and missed. Get ready for a US withdrawal of support for Ukraine, less funding for NATO, etc.

Are you a Trump supporter?

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 14:40

Trump has made his feelings known about NATO and Ukraine for years.
Ditto his intention to raise tariffs and wage a trade war with China.

If genuinely bases his policy choices on 100 unpaid volunteers then he's not fit to be President is he.

Unpaid foreign volunteers are permitted by the FEC and has been for many years.

Absolutely.

We know Trump bears a grudge - Labour have royally f’d up.

They will probably agree slavery reparations with the Commonwealth next.

LifeExperience · 23/10/2024 14:41

Volunteer or not, it's not legal unless they are a US citizen or a green card holder. That goes for Farage, too.

Almost 100 advisers, in a bitterly contested, divided US.

Utter stupidity.

No.

Foreign nationals are banned from donating money or anything of value to US election campaigns. They are allowed to “participate in campaign activities as an uncompensated volunteer”, according to the Federal Election Commission.

LifeExperience · 23/10/2024 14:47

To clarify, foreign volunteers can only knock on doors if they use no foreign money to do so. For instance, a foreigner living in the US can use their own money to knock on doors, but since the Labour Party was going to fly these people to the US and put them up, that is expenditure of foreign funds, making the whole thing illegal.

Bromptotoo · 23/10/2024 14:47

LifeExperience · 23/10/2024 14:28

Election interference in any way by foreign nationals is illegal in the US. I'm no fan of the man, but he is well within his rights here.

It's more complicated then that. Foreigners can travel to the US and help as is the case here but there are tight restrictions on spending etc. Provided the rules are complied with it's OK.

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 14:47

From The Times today -

"Conservative Party activists are understood to be in the US helping Trump’s campaign. And Trump has publicly been helped frequently by Nigel Farage, the Reform MP who has spent time in America campaigning for his friend."

It's complicated, but the Labour Party was planning to spend money getting them here and putting them up, feeding them, etc. That expenditure of foreign money to influence a campaign is illegal.

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 14:51

If the volunteers paid for themselves and were put up by Democratic supporters they haven't broken any laws. However much you might wish they had. Its legal and has been going on years - and Conservatives supporters are over there doing exactly the same thing.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2024 14:52

The Labour party have stated that the volunteers are not organised or funded by party

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 14:53

"former Tory Cabinet minister has been to the US to campaign for Democrat candidates because, he says, Donald Trump "flies in the face" of his conservative values.
Robert Buckland, who served as both justice secretary and Welsh secretary during his 14 years as a Tory MP, said he hopes Kamala Harris wins the November presidential election so the UK has a "stable ally and world power at a time when it is needed desperately".
The former Conservative MP for South Swindon wrote for The House about his recent trip to the US, where he knocked on doors in the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
He wrote: "It is my hope that the US avoids the chaos and uncertainty of a second Trump term, and that we have a stable and reliable ally and world power at a time when it is needed desperately.
"Like many Conservatives who traditionally identify with the GOP [Republican Party] in the traditions of Eisenhower and Reagan for example, supporting Trump flies in the face of those beliefs."

As a Tory, I hope for the world's sake that Kamala Harris wins

My trip to the US hammered home just what a nasty presidential election we have in store. But it is a vital one, too, and as a Conservative who ide...

I just checked and Farage is registered under FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act: efile.fara.gov/docs/7470-Registration-Statement-20240927-1.pdf

He still can't participate in electioneering, but he can legally try to influence the sitting US gov't.

How dumb is Trump and anyone voting for him? I voted Labour and I will say what I fucking like about Trump on here. This is a free country, unlike the US when he becomes the dictator he wants to be.

They honestly care about what Labour supporters do in their free time and not about massive, organised Russian influence in the USA? Putin is fucking rubbing his hands in glee at the prospect of a Trump win.

I feel really sorry for all the sensible moderate people in the US.

Ditto.
I voted Reform and I'm really happy that it's Trump who would most likely be the US President.
Oh, and I have a double citizenship, Czech and British.
Finally could vote in the last GE!

You realise waving your hands round going "nothing to see here" doesn't work on people who can read. Explain how this isn't election interference using your big words

@ohdelay, I would be wasting my time as you obviously cannot be bothered to read any of the posts on this thread.

LifeExperience · 23/10/2024 14:59

IF they pay for it themselves, yes. And yes, it does happen.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2024 15:01

The Labour party has stated that the volunteers do it on own time, own expense, accommodation comes from volunteers.

They indeed pay it for themselves.

Indulge me, waste your time using your biggest bestest words and tell me exactly why this isn't election interference. Like I said pointing elsewhere and going look is something that only works on very young children. Why isn't this election interference? You can copy and paste from other users. You have the floor ...

It’s not new. Loads of us went over for the Obama campaign to ‘volunteer’ and the Labour Party paid for our flights & housing and daily stipend.

It has already been clearly explained on this thread @ohdelay. You clearly have no intention of reading these posts.

Foreign nationals are banned from donating money or anything of value to US election campaigns.

They are allowed to “participate in campaign activities as an uncompensated volunteer”, according to the Federal Election Commission.

So provided that the Labour party in this case didn't pay for flights etc then there is no breach of regulations.
