When will things get better under Labour?

I remember reading a thread asking this, just after the election results. My thoughts at the time were that things wouldn’t change much. I’ve seen governments come and go and nothing much changes. We are the same people, the same country, the same industries and we have the same amount of money.

It’s depressing to see what is going on currently. Is it because we now have a left wing government? If the riots were happening under the Tories would the agitators be labelled as far left?

A tory administration might be more circumspect about using the term right wing but you'd need to be delusional to see the people throwing bricks and setting fires as of the left.

Oh, but Suella.....

Tregaronableist · 05/08/2024 09:42

Is it right wing though, or just a bunch of thugs looking for trouble and seizing opportunities to loot and steal?

You are blaming a government that has been in power less than a month for the racist rot that has been allowed to percolate in our society and is now causing people to throw violent tantrums because they did not get their own divisive and repugnant way? OK.

I am glad this govt is not negotiating with terrorists.

I’m not blaming the government. The low life are purely to blame, no one else.

Suggest you change your thread title and the whole thrust of your opening argument then.

You literally blamed the government.

I don’t blame the government, I haven’t said that at all.

The Labour Government haven’t done anything yet, how can they be to blame?

The idiots are purely to blame.

If I gave the impression that I blame the government, I apologise.

OP, your title and opening post clearly put blame on the government. For example - re-read the second sentence in your final paragraph.

I think you meant to ask 'will the new government tackle the current situation differently to how the conservatives would have done?'. Which I think is a valid and interesting question.

In my view, labour will be trying to approach this with a firm hand while also giving a 'we're listening' message. But asking for patience and tolerance while they undo the last government's 'them vs us' style.

Some of the rioters will be more right wing than others. Those giving nazi salutes and with swastika tattoos are probably right wing.

What is absolutely clear is that the shithead rent-a-gobs who have been stirring this up are definitely right wing. Laurence Fox, Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, Nigel Farage, Katy Hopkins etc are grifters pushing alt-right conspiracy theories. For them this is as a fantastic opportunity to gain money and influence from the gullible and easily scared.

It won’t get better. Politics just goes around in circles.

BTSarecool · 17/08/2024 22:40

I don't think anything will get better. They are clueless. It is easy being in opposition. I think they are struggling now they actually are meant to do something.

Spectre8 · 21/08/2024 16:21

When you have Rachel Reeves claiming expenses for the energy bills on her second home whilst telling pensioners there is no more winter fuel allowance ....well no things won't get better. Same old snouts in the trough whilst making other people's lives harder.

Farting · 21/08/2024 16:33

Things are not going to get better under either Labour or Tory.

It will get considerably worse until we have serious change with a new party.

It does feel like a lot of people were expecting to wake up on the 25th July and there would be some kind of utopia where all the trains were empty and on time, all the roads had been fixed, health waiting lists were eliminated and everyone had an overnight 25% pay rise.

Pigs ears and silk purses and all that.

That’s exactly what they were thinking.

We’re way way way too far down the road in the wrong direction for anything to get better without very substantial change. The only way out to better times is through worse times unfortunately.

Bromptotoo · 21/08/2024 17:07

Unless we put then in hotels or provide something for the purpose MPs from outside London (Reeves' seat is in Leeds) need home in London.

Cannot see how you avoid that.

BornToBeWokeFree · 21/08/2024 19:23

Things will not get better under Labour. People wanted to punish the Tories and it's led to this. Voters cut their nose off to spite their face.

Boomer55 · 14/08/2024 16:51

It won’t get better. Politics just goes around in circles.

Not helped by both main parties being "two cheeks of the same arse".

Neither have the remotest clue how to stop the downward spiral. Both are just re-arranging the Titanic's deck chairs.

Both make token gestures to appease their core voters but it's all pretty much irrelevant in the big scheme of things.

We're in deep do-do and no one has a clue how to start getting out of it.

Not just UK though, most Western Economies (most of Europe, America etc) are in exactly the same position and are just puppets on the strings of the people with real money/real power, i.e. China, Middle Eastern oil companies, Russian energy, etc.

terracottafarm · 21/08/2024 19:45

Nothing with her better with labour. They are going to drown this country. Same with conservatives. We need a real change.

RobinStrike · 27/08/2024 15:31

We need a set of apartments specifically for MPs to rent out during their term of office. They could be owned by the government and MPs who don't live in commuting distance allocated one. I'm not sure on size necessary-I'm sure some MPs would want space for their families to visit, so I know this isn't as easy as it sounds. But I'm sure it could be done, and the expenses of second homes in London solved.

Solonga · 27/08/2024 15:35

it won't

Maddy70 · 27/08/2024 15:38

Things already have
The Rwanda scheme was scrapped the same day they got in
The strikes were cancelled in the first week
Rishis expensive helicopter scheme was scrapped
Meals for school children
Professional , trustworthy appointments made
Immediate clampdown on fascism

They have only been. In 6 weeks

They are thugs, I don’t think the sort of people who engage in that behaviour are usually politically motivated. I’m not sure why racism and thuggery are labelled as right wing, that’s not how all the many people I know who are to the right of centre politically deport themselves.

Milsonophonia · 27/08/2024 15:40

The Labour Party are doing a good job of getting rid of any goodwill they had in the first place by being so utterly depressing and immediately taking money off pensioners and giving it to the strikers, while simultaneously letting their rich mates hang out in Downing St. Never mind KS and his worrying and anxious making speech today about how hard things are going to be. I think their first few weeks have been a PR disaster and I'm disappointed in them, because I was naive enough to think they'd make a real positive change.
