When will things get better under Labour?

I remember reading a thread asking this, just after the election results. My thoughts at the time were that things wouldn’t change much. I’ve seen governments come and go and nothing much changes. We are the same people, the same country, the same industries and we have the same amount of money.

It’s depressing to see what is going on currently. Is it because we now have a left wing government? If the riots were happening under the Tories would the agitators be labelled as far left?

It won't..we are doomed.
The country is already going into a depression.
My friends and family who voted Labour ( most always have) are now regretting it

Most of the Western World economies are in managed (or mismanaged) decline and it's pretty much irreversible. Most of Europe and America are heading the same way and yes, a "depression" is definitely on the cards. Inevitable really as that's what happens when you aren't paying your way and are constantly borrowing just to pay your bills. Not helped by massive balance of payments deficits on goods meaning a constant and steady flow of real money out of the country to buy goods made in the Far East, using borrowed money to pay benefits etc.

Which is why I e been overpaying my mortgage asap cos if that depression comes ill be less stressful than I would be if I was still carrying a big mortgage.

I don't know about that. If we have hyper inflation, your mortgage debt would soon disappear. It's people with savings who are more at risk as with high inflation or a currency revaluation, they'd end up with their savings rapidly losing value. The best place to be really is having a steady reliable job with a mortgage. That way your wage will increase with inflation and your mortgage will reduce in real terms.

About Keir Starmer reading it wrong and being anxious making and depressing? John Crace in the Guardian for starters.

John Crace is a satirist. You’re not supposed to take him seriously.

Really? People on here took him very seriously when he was beasting the Tories. Maybe they just didn't get the joke.

No we didn’t. He made us laugh then too because we’re intelligent enough to be able to tell the difference between satire and political commentary. I thought yesterday’s column was very amusing.

A very good read and yes we know he’s a satirist but satire can be deadly serious

So how far apart do they need to be announced so people don't fall for the gaslighting shite?

6 months

People never fail to fall for pre-election promises every time. It's almost as if the policiticians have them where they want them.

I knew a naive creature who voted Lib Dem when they came into power as part of the coalition - 2010? and then grumbled because they didn't do exactly what they'd promised. How could they? Got to compromise! 'I'll never vote Lib Dem again' the person said. How silly. It's just an example.

As for dickheads who believed that tosh on that bus.......................

Or any of them who tell us we'll have cheaper energy blah di blah di rubbish........

Rummly · 28/08/2024 16:46

I do think we should all accept that a new government has to find its feet and has to weather what external events come its way. (Would have been nice if Labour supporters could admit that about covid and the energy price shocks, but there you go.)

What I find genuinely comical about this government and its vocal fans, though, is that the ‘you’re wicked, we’re much more moral’ has gone on the bonfire immediately.

If a government needs to make cuts to OAPs’ allowances, or hike taxes, just do it, tell the truth and stand up for yourself honestly. This bollocks about millionaire pensioners and a phantom black hole is just going to sink this government before it’s got going.

Yep, I could have written the same post word for word. I remember those lectures and seminars and remember thinking "what the f*!" at the time.

Likewise when tax credits were announced by Gordon Brown. Our entire office was watching the live budget on TVs in our office and there was a collective intake of breath of the shock of it. We realised immediately that it would mean workers reducing their hours to the minimum threshold, and people starting "fake" small businesses to claim they were working to get tax credits.

And it all happened. We had a couple of years of loads of new clients setting up market stalls selling cheap sweets bought in bulk from wholesalers, window cleaning rounds, cleaning, car washes, gardeners, etc., all "breaking even", so just doing enough paid work to cover their costs, but also claiming they were "working" the requisite number of hours to get tax credits by claiming they were spending time on administration, training, book-keeping, research, marketing, etc.

We went on courses at that time explaining the rules about the "flex" in income from one year to another and how to tell genuine business clients to keep their income within certain boundaries the year after the initial claim to keep their full tax credit award despite earning a lot more in the second year. There was a whole industry aimed at maximising tax credit claims!

Absolutely.
I don’t think people realise how much Blair and Brown have fucked this country over and it has had decade long implications.

It was fine when they left. If you want to go to the real roots of the mess we’re in you’ll need to look at Thatcher.

Thatcher did not cause the absolute shit show that Blair/Brown have caused this country.

Thatcher did not cause the absolute shit show that Blair/Brown have caused this country.

Her policies are at the root of everything that’s wrong. We have a housing crisis because she decimated social housing, we have a stagnant economy and areas of deprivation because she stripped all the industry out of the country. She privatised everything in sight leading to lack of investment in utilities to line investors’ pockets. You need to look at what’s wrong and why. The successive Labour governments achieved miracles in 13 years, only for their achievements to be torn apart by the next iteration of Tories.

Plenty of politicians and prime ministers have had decades to "right any wrongs" done by Thatcher. Funny how they havn't. Neither Tory NOR Labour!

How? Rip the industry out of a country that took over a century to build up - how is that going to be replaced? At least we have a government that’s planning to build some social housing at last, let’s hope they remember to repeal right to buy while they’re at it.
