Why? It works really well in my country. Really convenient for everything to have one official ID and cuts down fraud

SquirrelosaurusSoShiny · 25/09/2025 23:50

I'm in favour of them 🤷‍♀️

Hiptothisjive · 25/09/2025 23:54

Yup works really well in a number of countries. As a top immigration lawyer has said - he was all for them. You have to prove you can work and get things now with documents - why would this be any different. No issues at all.

Lemoncanine · 25/09/2025 23:55

Am LONGING for this! Should change so many things, and really reduce the size of the black economy

duckfordinner · 25/09/2025 23:58

Digital id = digital slavery. Thanks for posting this petition

The Government in this country cannot be trusted with our personal data. Listen to Sir Jake Berry.

“There was a significant cyber-attack in May 2025 on the Ministry of Justice's Legal Aid Agency (LAA) systems, which resulted in a large-scale data breach affecting hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of legal aid applicants in England and Wales since 2010. The breach was discovered in April and May 2025, with the hackers claiming to have accessed over 2.1 million pieces of data, including personal and financial information. The LAA's online systems were taken offline for several days in May to contain the attack and conduct an investigation”

Clueless12389 · 26/09/2025 01:31

I’m in favour if it stops thousands of illegals working in the black market, not paying taxes etc.

Exactly. How is this different to passports, driving licences, information reported to HMRC by employers and financial institutions, NHS numbers, medical records, NI numbers etc?

They already have all our data. This just brings it into one place. It's about time in my view.

ladsladzladse · 26/09/2025 04:47

What was the "good reason" why the UK national ID card pilot programme was scrapped in 2010? I had a family member who was part of that trial and thought it worked very well; her impression was that it was scrapped due to the government of the day bowing to unclearly articulated pressure from rightist/EUroskeptic element due to unrelated vulnerabilities (google 'David Blunkett'). If these had been in place from 2010 forward, a lot of the pro-Brexit talking points related to migrants would have been non-starters.

Having used similar ID cards when living in other European countries, I really wish the UK had them - although unfortunately it's impossible to recapture the advantages they would have given us while in the EU/EEA. I can see the issue with citizens being required to carry a card, but if these are optional then bring them on - better horrifically way too late than never!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 26/09/2025 05:59

in favour of this!

SlipperyLizard · 26/09/2025 06:10

I’m in favour of ID cards, I have no idea why we don’t have them already. The government already has all of the data that would be on them (and more) about me, so I don’t get the “you can’t trust the government with your data” argument.

Apparently our lack of ID cards/ease of working in the black economy is one of the “pulls” for illegal migrants to come here, which I would have thought would make them popular.

Londonnight · 26/09/2025 06:11

It's about time this was introduced. I have no problems with having an ID card and really hope they get it through this time.
Most other countries have ID cards, so I can't see any reason as to why the UK don't.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 26/09/2025 06:14

This Government, Meta, X, His Magesty's Courts and Tribunal Service, Transport for London, the NHS, various online shops, Google, various credit check companies, my bank, Mumsnet, my utilities companies, my vet, several charities and galleries of note, Pizza Extpress and Green King (plus loads more people) have my data so this is just another thing in my eyes.

When I was 18 in 1996 before the internet properly blew up I might be more concerned but now I'm totally "meh" about it.

Hacking is something most online businesses and institutions should be on top of but whenever we sign up for something and input our bank details we are taking a chance, aren't we?

Topseyt123 · 26/09/2025 06:20

I'm very much in favour of this. It's long overdue and should have been done years ago.

Plenty of other countries have ID cards with no issues. Why not the ridiculously stubborn British?

I am British by the way. I've long thought it ridiculous that we don't have them. Passports and driving licences are not compulsory ID documents to have. Not everyone drives or travels abroad.

I knew a silly petition like this would appear. I won't be signing and I hope the politicians have the sense to ignore it.

crunchylamp · 26/09/2025 06:22

Signed - along with nearly half a million other people.

At the moment there is an E-visa system that all foreign nationals have to comply with

https://www.gov.uk/evisa

Maybe people need to educate themselves. The employers who are employing illegal immigrants do not give one about the existing rules. Why is a digital card going to change that??

It will cost the government a lot of money to implement and police - and to what benefit?

eVisas: access and use your online immigration status

How to access and use an eVisa: set up a UKVI account, update your details and get a share code to prove your immigration status when you work, rent or travel.

https://www.gov.uk/evisa

Fatcatsinspats · 26/09/2025 06:25

Your data is already out there. It’s linked to your NI number, date of birth and addresses. Financial institutions and credit reference agencies already share info with the Govt as do local authorities. It can be pulled together if necessary.

There is a huge black economy in this country linked to organised crime. If you think it’s about civil liberties you are seriously deluded.

Digital ID has many advantages.

This isn't for the people who are eligible for evisas. But thanks for illustrating how such absolutely stupid petitions get so many signatures from people who read a buzzword and salivate like Pavlov's dogs.

milveycrohn · 26/09/2025 06:54

Legal Migrants already have visas. Its just that those who want to employ illegal migrants dont bother to check.
What makes you think they are going to start now?
My concern is that these proposals talk about digital ID cards. Does this mean that everyone will be required to have a smart phone?
I know several elderly people, who just cannot use them! (for various reasons)
