I'm in favour of ID cards, it's a good idea. Across the world most countries have some form of ID card, both in Europe and worldwide. Some are compulsory, some are choice to sign up. Only 10 countries have nothing like this at all, including the UK.

When I was in Norway, I was really impressed with their system. Their national ID number is a requirement for all citizens and anyone living there for any length of time. You can't stay long term without obtaining the special number first. Without it, you can't remain in the country, you can't take on a job, you can't rent or buy a home, nor get medical care, nor open bank account. Certain things can't be bought without the number and you can't vote....it covers everything. It's impossible to "go under the radar" for long. Yes, it does store everyone's data but even that's helpful.....they don't go for long complicated (and expensive to run) census every 10 years because they can track everyone and the information they need all the time. Brilliant!

We all have ID numbers already. We have National Insurance (NI) numbers and NHS numbers. You can’t get a job without an NI number, unless you work for a corrupt vape shop/nail bar/car wash/…. owner. These people don’t check people’s entitlement to work now, so they won’t be asking for your ID card either.

Spot on. The government aren't clamping down on these now so why would that change just because digital ID cards come in.

Exactly. People are missing this basic point. They don’t check what is needed now, another version doesn’t change that.

As I said in a previous post, not everyone has or needs a passport or driving licence. Not everyone travels abroad or drives. Some people who have just can't think beyond the fact that they have those for some reason.

There is no legal requirement to have these documents but ID (especially photo ID) can be legally required at times. For things like voting etc. Certain purchases. Actually applying for credit, mortgages, property purchases or things like passports. Other things such as if required by police. What are people who don't have a passport or driving licence supposed to do?

That's why we should be required to have ID cards.

Nonsense.

What are people who don't have a passport or driving licence supposed to do?
If they need ID for purposes that benefit them, then they can apply for a passport. It's voluntary.
Why do they want to switch to a compulsory system? - it's for the Government's benefit, not ours.

87% of the population have at least one passport according to the 2021 census. You have to prove your right to work to be employed in the UK.

if you don’t have an ID document you have the right to apply for a passport.

You haven’t convinced me this isn’t a waste of time and money yet.

angelos02 · 26/09/2025 09:19

In some countries that have Digital ID, you can't even buy food or book travel without using it. I'm not saying that would happen here but I am ever increasingly suspicious of what could happen.

I’m not signing

I support them.

IAmNotALoon · 26/09/2025 09:20

I bet they model this on China's social credit system. So criticise government policy on Mumsnet and loose access to your bank account. Oh joy!

I’m in favour if it stops thousands of illegals working in the black market, not paying taxes etc.

How will it stop them?

Some on here would love that. As crazy as that is.

Proudofitbabe · 26/09/2025 09:22

Signed It. It’s only the law abiding people and employers that ALREADY use traditional ID, that will be made to go along with this. The ones subverting the rules still will.
It’s a pointless and expensive COVID passport by another name, only worth having as a method of control/surveillance.

Brownie points for you under Keir Stalin's new regime! I'm being sent to the gulag.

Danikm151 · 26/09/2025 09:26

I’m for a digital ID card. At the moment everything is separate… HMRC account, UC account, NHS account. This will combine them and mean less struggling to find different logins and passwords.

Absolutely.
Interesting to note that the current law about employers checking ID was introduced last time Labour were in Government. They now want to extend it. What next?

Don't you realise that that is precisely the problem? All your information in one place!! It's a hacker's dream.

tanstaafl · 26/09/2025 09:49

the online safety act will incorporate the digital id.
you’ll then be required to sign in to social media using your digital ID.
dissent of any form can be recorded by the government.

it’s a socialist dream state.

sadly I don’t think the conservatives, greens, or Lib Dem’s will reject this idea.
wonder if Reform will.

Digital id = digital slavery. Thanks for posting this petition

According to sky news, although they are saying we have to have digital ID cards, Keir Starmer claims we won’t have to show them! So makes you wonder what the point in the government making us have them doesn’t it! I agree with you, it’s digital slavery by manipulation!

645,000+ signatures now.

And. 52% of people who voted in the Referendum voted leave and look where that got us.

Increased food prices.

Restrictions for UK citizens travelling to, living and working in the EU.

Harder for EU citizens to do the same here, which ironically has led to an increase in non EU nationals working here. Suddenly a lot of the overseas staff coming here to work legally in hospitality and care work are from Africa instead of Poland and Bulgaria. I bet those who thought that voting leave would magically make all the foreigners disappear weren't expecting that to happen.

Catwalking · 26/09/2025 10:05

I’ve signed, many thanks ANTIHEROTAYLORSWIFT for posting the petition here.
Rob Laurie on bbc radio 4 this morn, interviewing contacts as to whether ID cards would hinder ‘immigrants’ = Absolutely not, it simply adds another money making source to the criminal gangs who’ll just sell illegal id cards.

slightlyoverbaked · 26/09/2025 10:06

Sorry, I’m in favour too.

CrimsonStoat · 26/09/2025 10:27

I suppose the numbers signing at least shows the government how many halfwits there are in the country. Not a question that could be reasonably asked on the census!

IAmThePrettiestManOnMyIsland · 26/09/2025 10:27

I will not comply.
