Your data is already out there. It’s linked to your NI number, date of birth and addresses. Financial institutions and credit reference agencies already share info with the Govt as do local authorities. It can be pulled together if necessary.

There is a huge black economy in this country linked to organised crime. If you think it’s about civil liberties you are seriously deluded.

Digital ID has many advantages.

Organised crime is incredibly common in countries WITH ID cards!

gerispringer · 26/09/2025 07:01

I’m elderly and have had a smart phone since they came out. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t have one. There will be fewer and fewer people over the years who don’t have one. I’m guessing those elderly who don’t have a phone won’t be looking for employment. Maybe those very few could get a physical card. I’m all for it having lived in countries where you had to have one and it working fine.

crunchylamp · 26/09/2025 07:56

This isn't for the people who are eligible for evisas. But thanks for illustrating how such absolutely stupid petitions get so many signatures from people who read a buzzword and salivate like Pavlov's dogs.

@ladsladzladse

Ermm - well of course it will be for people who are eligible for e-visas. It is for every resident of the UK - all 68 million of them. The reason I mentioned it is because people wrongly thing identity cards will stop illegal employment.

The petition may be stupid in your opinion, but we are still living in a democracy (at the moment) and people are allowed to express their views whether or not it agrees with yours.

As for salivating like Pavlov's dogs - yeah - whatever you think 🙄

You're literally writing this on social media the government already have your data. This just makes it easier to have everything in one place for you

EasternStandard · 26/09/2025 08:52

crunchylamp · 26/09/2025 06:22

Signed - along with nearly half a million other people.

At the moment there is an E-visa system that all foreign nationals have to comply with

https://www.gov.uk/evisa

Maybe people need to educate themselves. The employers who are employing illegal immigrants do not give one about the existing rules. Why is a digital card going to change that??

It will cost the government a lot of money to implement and police - and to what benefit?

Yep.

Listen to Sir Jake Berry

Absolutely not. He’s a twit. I wouldn’t expect a coherent argument from him so wasn’t surprised that he compared it to Nazi Germany 10 seconds into that clip.

Clueless12389 · 26/09/2025 01:31

I’m in favour if it stops thousands of illegals working in the black market, not paying taxes etc.

Has it in Germany, Italy or anywhere?

Hedjwitch · 26/09/2025 08:55

Don't have a problem with it at all

Rainbowdays123 · 26/09/2025 08:56

I’m not sure I get the point of them when I have a passport and a driving licence (that is always in my wallet). Why do I need another thing?

ForensicFlossy · 26/09/2025 08:58

I promise I'm not being goady, please could someone give me the reasons why they are against ID cards? I simply dont get it in this day and age when we our digital footprint is already there.

littlebilliie · 26/09/2025 08:59

Absolutely ending benefit fraud and NHS tourism claims. I already have many forms of legal id and this will simplify life for everyone

I'm worried where it will lead. If you are overweight and they have access to see what food you are buying, what next, no treatment if you don't make better choices when shopping. Same for alcohol or cigarettes. What if you are on benefits find the money to go on holiday - ah well, you must be getting too much money etc etc. I find it frightening.

Just listening to a Deliveroo scam target and registering a whole street in London this week, fake bank statements and driving licenses. This would end mass fraud

Allisgoodtoday · 26/09/2025 09:01

I'm in favour of ID cards, it's a good idea. Across the world most countries have some form of ID card, both in Europe and worldwide. Some are compulsory, some are choice to sign up. Only 10 countries have nothing like this at all, including the UK.

When I was in Norway, I was really impressed with their system. Their national ID number is a requirement for all citizens and anyone living there for any length of time. You can't stay long term without obtaining the special number first. Without it, you can't remain in the country, you can't take on a job, you can't rent or buy a home, nor get medical care, nor open bank account. Certain things can't be bought without the number and you can't vote....it covers everything. It's impossible to "go under the radar" for long. Yes, it does store everyone's data but even that's helpful.....they don't go for long complicated (and expensive to run) census every 10 years because they can track everyone and the information they need all the time. Brilliant!

How would it do that?

IAmNotALoon · 26/09/2025 09:02

I can't believe that there are so many people that are so naive that they wouldn't see the danger of digital ID...

Exactly. It will be done by stealth and then it will be too late.

I hope they don't give the contract to Fujitsu, or another company that can't design robust computer systems.

angelos02 · 26/09/2025 09:06

And you can guarantee that they will try to sell the idea as it may help with benefit fraud - but won't go after the people at the top creaming off billions in tax.

Lemoncanine · 25/09/2025 23:55

Am LONGING for this! Should change so many things, and really reduce the size of the black economy

How?

We have plenty of ways of cracking down fraud and illegal working already, but we don’t have the manpower to enforce them.

How will this scheme be any different. You people are utterly deluded.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/09/2025 09:08

I’m not sure I get the point of them when I have a passport and a driving licence (that is always in my wallet). Why do I need another thing?

As I said in a previous post, not everyone has or needs a passport or driving licence. Not everyone travels abroad or drives. Some people who have just can't think beyond the fact that they have those for some reason.

There is no legal requirement to have these documents but ID (especially photo ID) can be legally required at times. For things like voting etc. Certain purchases. Actually applying for credit, mortgages, property purchases or things like passports. Other things such as if required by police. What are people who don't have a passport or driving licence supposed to do?

That's why we should be required to have ID cards.

Im pretty sure that all this data is already available if anyone really wanted to find it. I buy most things by debit or credit card, I have multiple loyalty cards, why would an id card change that?

when our digital footprint is already there.

Mine isn't, not on my phone.

Do you really want all your life in one place, on your phone - a phone that can break, lose battery, be stolen, be hacked, etc. I don't! You can have a voluntary ID if you want but why do you want to impose it on me?
