an older guy ... saddled up to my table
From the image that conjures up, he sounds like a bit of a cowboy.

weather I worry about it or not
That old chestnut, spotted today.

It’s my time to shine! I’ve been keeping a list of errors I see online and I add to it when I see a new one. Yes these are all real 😵‍💫

Incredibly sad I know but at least it took away my urge to correct people. I started off tracking the site I found the error but I didn’t keep it up sorry!

Whither away. I admit that could be auto-correct in action.

Sick of seeing curb (as in curb appeal) instead of kerb.

I even saw someone correct someone else's 'kerb' to 'curb' recently, despite it being pavement-related.

And shine you have. A fabulous collection of misspelt tripe. Keep the list active x

'canopies' is my favourite hear [sic] 😂😂😂

GoBazGo · 10/03/2026 20:41

I know this will have been noted before but it was in a work document:
”Seen we won’t have a full itinerary we can have time to develop….”

Rather than: “Seeing as we won’t have…”

Recycling this from thread #1; it was one of my favourites.

Very rude of them.
However, if you look at the etymology there’s a strong argument that on this one the Americans are right and ‘kerb’ is just a phonetic misspelling we brits have perpetuated for centuries. Grin

Yes, but language evolves.

HelenaWilson · 10/03/2026 22:25

'Weary' for 'wary' frequently.
No-one can use discreet/discrete correctly any more

And on the (increasingly illiterate) BBC website just now, an article has 'Princess Catherine' throughout.
'Prince William said Princess Catherine had morning sickness so would not be attending.' No he didn't say that.

And I know it's not strictly a grammar peeve, but on several threads this evening I've seen 'have you reached out to...'

AlbieJiggered · 10/03/2026 22:50

What's wrong with 'Princess Catherine'?
Catherine, Princess of Wales - Wikipedia

GameofPhones · 10/03/2026 22:57

'Toe the line' is now almost always rendered 'tow the line', which obliterates the original image.

GameofPhones · 10/03/2026 23:03

Do you think these errors reveal poor education, or 'can't be bothered, it doesn't matter anyway'? There is also the difficulty of typing on small screens.

HelenaWilson · 10/03/2026 23:04

What's wrong with 'Princess Catherine'?

It's not her official title. She is the Princess of Wales. Prior to that she was the Duchess of Cambridge. (Or the appropriate Scottish title when in Scotland.)

Some elements of the media may refer to her as Princess Catherine, but the BBC should know better. (But then it was the BBC who once referred to the late Queen as Her Royal Highness, so this isn't a new thing.)

AlbieJiggered · 10/03/2026 23:06

@GameofPhones , a bit of all of them?

@HelenaWilson , Prince William is William, Prince of Wales.
The BBC isn't wrong in referring to her as Princess Catherine.

GameofPhones · 11/03/2026 00:00

AlbieJiggered Another 'bit' could be an assumption that spellcheckers will make everything ok. I think the world in general tends to forget that all of these artificial systems - spellcheckers, Google translate, even handheld calculators need developers behind them who create the systems. These human developers must have the correct knowledge. I wonder if we will end up with educational castes again - those with the knowledge, and those without who rely on the machines.

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 00:07

Good point, @GameofPhones .
I think we'll end up with people who can't reverse their cars without sensors or find their way anywhere with a map.

Online translators are so useful but they have their limitations.

Smurphy99 · 11/03/2026 02:01

”Chester drawers” instead of “chest of drawers” on Facebook furniture listings! Gives me enough rage to power the national fucking grid.

GameofPhones · 11/03/2026 02:08

Are you sure it wasn't Chester draws to complete the transformation - a new kind of knickers.

sesquipedalian · 11/03/2026 06:50

I’ve just read “he has to right a cover letter”.

sesquipedalian · 11/03/2026 07:01

And another one: he “needed the hospital…[because] he had scolded his fingers.”

I saw 'cowtowing' once. I don't think they meant this...

The BBC isn't wrong in referring to her as Princess Catherine.

Isn't she only a princess by marriage though, rather in her own right? In which case she's either "Catherine, Princess of Wales" or (if we're being old school) Princess William (in the same vein as Princess Michael of Kent). Happy to be corrected on the latter but she is not Princess Catherine.
