I mean god preserve us (someone will pick me up that I didn't capitalise god ...)

Another thread, which I think we're not allowed to talk about probably, massive argument about...

You've got another think coming.

People think that it's 'you've got another thing coming'

Many people think that 'thing' is correct, even though it makes no sense at all.

Cattery · 26/07/2025 11:57

“If you think that you’ve got another think coming” ie think again. How can it possibly be ‘thing’?

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/07/2025 12:00

It’s on another thread isn’t it. I agree, ‘another thing coming’ makes no sense.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 26/07/2025 12:14

I've always heard it as another thing coming. I've googled and Mariam Webster says think is the original saying which has evolved into thing, but both are correct.

soupyspoon · 26/07/2025 12:22

Both are not correct. It hasnt 'evolved' into anything, its just plain wrong and illogical

People have misheard because of the way 'think' flows into 'coming' and then they mis say it.

OP posts:
Reallybadidea · 26/07/2025 12:26

I think devolved would be more accurate.

Judas Priest didn't help.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 26/07/2025 12:41

Shouldn’t it be ‘which I think we’re probably not allowed to talk about’ rather than ‘which I think we’re not allowed to talk about, probably,’? Or to be even more pedantic, ‘that I think we’re probably not allowed to talk about’?

But then that also begs the question whether there ought to be a space between closing quotation marks and a question mark, and whether single or double quotation marks are appropriate for a UK hosted but international (of sorts…) forum 😂

I should have put a disclaimer in the OP though. I am not a true pedant.

I dont know grammar from grandma and also due to the way I type, I almost never put apostrophes in my writing. I did in the OP as I wanted to get you all off the scent that Im an imposter, but posts after that I havent bothered.

If it was another think coming, shouldn’t it be thought, not think.

I dont think so because of the way we use think. To say 'I need a think about that'. Means I have another think coming or you have another think coming is right. I think

This is one of my biggest pet peeves.

And people who just don't get it will argue and argue and ARGUE that they're right!!

I'm going to have to make a swift exit from this thread before my blood pressure goes up.

MissedItByThisMuch · 26/07/2025 12:54

This drives me mad! Thing makes no sense at all! The use of “think” instead of “thought” isn’t for grammatical reasons, it’s jocular, echoing the “think” in the original statement.

slightlydistrac · 26/07/2025 13:00

Now this is odd. Very odd. The Michael Buble song 'It's a Beautiful Day' uses the phrase, and when I've listened to the song, it sounds right and I have always been pleased about it. However, I have just checked the lyrics online on a couple of websites, and they both have the word down as 'thing' instead of 'think'.

It’s exactly that. Thank you

soupyspoon · 26/07/2025 13:05

I think Michael Buble probably needs to answer to this.

Exactly. It's quite obvious, too (or should be).

ConnieHeart · 26/07/2025 13:10

I've always said 'thing' and I've seen it written that way many times. It might not make sense but not every saying makes sense

People write it wrong, because they hear it wrong.

What other sayings dont make logical sense?

interesting, I've always heard it as 'thing' in that song (and screamed because it's WRONG!)

There was a thing/think thread on here a few years ago that I think filled the whole thread - but even after 1000 posts literally none of the 'thing'-ers could explain it in a way that made any sense. Because it doesn't.

If there hasn't been a first 'thing' mentioned there can't be another.

TheBuffetInspector · 26/07/2025 13:12

I've never wrapped my head around this one 'thing' does not make sense, 'think' however does, to me and I'm not a grammar enthusiast, I just try to make sense of things.

After reading so many books using 'thing'. I sort of accepted that they were right.

The phrase is reminiscent of my childhood. Usually my parent shouting it at me. It's not something I've spoken out loud for as long as I can remember. If ever.

What would the 'thing' coming be? Too many opportunities opened by one phrase.

TheBuffetInspector · 26/07/2025 13:13

I'm not editing to add the glaring error.

If you think I am, you've got another...

Cheap at half the price. Well, yeh 🤷‍♀️

to be fair, although I'm a 'another think'er, I agree not every saying makes sense.

My gran's favourite, 'You're not as green as you're cabbage looking,' for example.
Or 'it's raining cats and dogs.'

NoodleHorses · 26/07/2025 13:14

My parents said it all the time. Think, not thing. Each one saying that the other needed to readjust their opinions. Made sense to me.
Mid C19 phrase. I looked it up once.

Sundaybananas · 26/07/2025 13:21

I thought it was “think” until I heard the Judas Priest song (late 80s/early 90s).
