Why would Tur be pronounced Ter?

Borris · 10/04/2023 23:05

Tur and ter sound the same in my accent

DrFoxtrot · 10/04/2023 23:08

I used to say choomerick about 30 odd years ago and then switched to tur/ter mer ic. I don't know why the pronunciation changed.

Why would Tur be pronounced Ter?

I don’t understand these comments! OP is asking about “er”/“ur” sound Vs “oo” sound, no?

TUR here. Never understand why people make the r silent 🤷🏼‍♀️ I more often hear “too” (or “tyoo”) than “choo” tbh

Why would Tur be pronounced Ter?

How else would it be pronounced?

How do you pronounce 'fur'?!

GudiBrallan · 10/04/2023 23:15

-er / -ir / -ur are homophones. Hence 'ter' and 'tur' having the same sound in some English dialects.

I say TER-muh-ric, but I'm pretty sure I used to say CHEW-muh-ric.
