TER-muh-rik?

CHOOM-rik?

Back in the 80s my parents taught me to say choo-mer-ick, and said it that way every time, and I remember all the TV chefs of the day seemed to say it the same way.

A couple of years ago my parents laughingly disparaged anyone pronouncing it choo-mer-ick, couldn't believe anyone would ever say it that way, how ridiculous 🙄 They now say tur/ter-mer-ick, as do most of the TV chefs. I've no idea when it officially switched over.

I also remember them laughing at me saying ter-mer-ick in about the 00s. Such a weird thing to get hung up on.

I'm trying to work out in what accent ir/ur/er aren't homophones

Fir tree / fur coat / Fernando

My accent 🤷🏻‍♀️ eg I don't say Furnando. Saying that, I'm now pretty sure my choo-m-rik is incorrect, it's just how I learned to say it, it's a word I rarely use and have never thought about it before.

DiscoBeat · 11/04/2023 00:37

So would you say Tertle for Turtle?
Yes!

FrangipaniBlue · 11/04/2023 00:38

OnaBegonia · 10/04/2023 23:52

Tur/Ter what??
So would you say Tertle for Turtle? or Turry for Terry??
Tur mer ick

Come again??

Terry = eh sound so it's Teh-ree (same as Ferry)

Furry = ur/er so it's fur-ree

ur and er have the same sound, as proven by the word turmeric!

tur-mur-ick

Tur-tle

FrangipaniBlue · 11/04/2023 00:40

Sorry meant TER-tle !

HeddaGarbled · 11/04/2023 00:45

So would you say Tertle for Turtle? or Turry for Terry

Yes to your first example, no to your second. How do you pronounce ‘turtle’?

SwordToFlamethrower · 11/04/2023 00:52

Phoebo · 10/04/2023 23:12

Toom - er - ick

Same

Marynotsocontrary · 10/04/2023 23:28

-er / -ir / -ur are homophones.

Are they? They sound different to me.

Are you Scottish? Or have a similarly rhotic accent?

aholidaynotacarpark · 11/04/2023 00:59

I think I flit between the two pronunciations. I think tur-merick is correct though.
Does anyone remember the Vic and Bob sketch about it? Bob has the most wonderful emphasis on the CHEW~ part!

FishWithoutAName · 11/04/2023 01:05

T-you-mur-ick

Fast.

LizzieAnt · 11/04/2023 01:23

saraclara · 11/04/2023 00:58

Not sure about pp but I'm Irish and -er, -ir and -ur aren't homophobes to me. Saylng tertle for turtle would sound extremely strange in my accent. I've never really thought about it though, and I guess I just haven't been listening to other people's accents carefully enough!

Is it rhotic versus non-rhotic that makes the difference so?

HeadacheEarthquake · 11/04/2023 01:24

Toor-mrik

adultdds · 11/04/2023 04:00

pm24 · 10/04/2023 23:03

It's

Ter-Muh-Rik

Agreed!

LettingMySouthSideShow · 11/04/2023 04:14

Too-mer-ick

Accent issues. 😅

Egghead68 · 11/04/2023 04:21

Ter muh rik

butterpuffed · 11/04/2023 08:15

I've never heard of it being pronounced starting with Choo apart from in this thread . Do you also say Choo - Kee for Turkey ?

Thestruggler · 11/04/2023 08:19

I came on to say "haldi" as well but I've been beaten to it! 😂

Dassams · 11/04/2023 08:20

Tur-mer-rick exactly as it's written

Never heard it as ChewmerickConfused

Turkey isn't Chewkey?!

Fairislefandango · 11/04/2023 08:21

Tur-meric. Even if I were to for some reason miss put the 'r', I'd pronounce it tyu-meric, not choo-meric, for the same reason that I don't say choos-day for Tuesday!

Dassams · 11/04/2023 08:23

How do people get from Tur to Choo??

dudsville · 11/04/2023 08:23

I just learned there's an r in the beginning. So, I've Airways said "toomerik", but i shall now say "termerik"!

FishWithoutAName · 11/04/2023 08:28

butterpuffed · 11/04/2023 08:15

No buy some people say CHOO-seday for Tuesday.

Fir tree - fur coat - Fernando

All the same 'fer' to me. (South East)

Im trying to think to think of an accent where they're different?!

butterpuffed · 11/04/2023 08:36

FishWithoutAName · 11/04/2023 08:28

That isn't really comparable as Tuesday doesn't start Tur . It could bring a whole new ballgame on here though !

FTMUM2023 · 11/04/2023 08:37

Too mer ick
😂
