The u and the e have the same sound for me.

Really??

The new Turing scheme is definitely pronounced differently to say Tertiary?

No, because the r in 'Turing' is a hard consonant, whereas the r in 'turmerick' is a soft consonant, before the m, which is a hard consonant.

Fairislefandango · 11/04/2023 14:08

DC1's dad is Scottish and takes the piss out of how us English folk pronounce "drawing" like it contains a second "r". "draw-ring"

Only some English people do that though - it's not universal.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/04/2023 14:18

I say it sort of tch-oor-mah-rick.

TheShade · 11/04/2023 14:31

Haldi & tuhmeric

AutumnNymph · 11/04/2023 14:48

Haldi!

But also Turr-ma-rick

Why would Tur be pronounced Chew??

HeathenPlayingHouse · 11/04/2023 14:56

Only just realising that I miss the extra R and pronounce it like "Tumour Rick" 😂

pickledandpuzzled · 11/04/2023 15:03

'Ur' can be 'air' in Liverpool.
So furry sounds like fairy, turmeric like tair-meric.

But there's someone where else where -air sounds like -ur, so hairy becomes hury.

English is hard!

eatdrinkandbemerry · 11/04/2023 15:50

Chew muir Rick

SittingNextToIt · 11/04/2023 15:51

Wenfy · 10/04/2023 23:09

Haldi

Perfect answer :) or “holood” too depending on which Indian language one is using!

Legoninjago1 · 11/04/2023 16:23

Ah i got you @NowZeusHasLainWithLeda / it's all rather confusing to me as I thought it was so obvious!

Allchangename354 · 11/04/2023 16:34

Haldi or
chew mer ick - I know it isn’t as spelt

inshitsville · 11/04/2023 19:02

Dassams · 11/04/2023 13:50

"drawing" like it contains a second "r".

What?!

Doesn't everyone say Draw-ing? Like Mowing or showing? There's no second R?!

O-oh I'm guilty as charged and say drawring.

I'm going to make more effort!

I've started adding it to everything so had a few conversations and surprised how many people say tumour-ic. It's termeric of course.

Surprisingly nice in porridge but the colour is alarming.

Why would it be TERmeric?
Wouldn't it be TUR as in turn?

flutterbyebaby · 11/04/2023 23:20

That stuff that turns the rice yellow

Kvetching · 11/04/2023 23:21

Tur as in turn sounds exactly the same as eg, ter as in term?

Umm, haven't we already had this conversation?😂

In Japan, they sell Kit-Kats in dozens of different flavours - including hot chilli - so they probably do a turmeric version too! I'm just waiting for them to launch the honeydew melon and onion gravy version, then I'm going to sell up here and move permanently to Tokyo Grin

Pestispeeved · 12/04/2023 00:23

@pickledandpuzzled you have my MiL to a tee there tair-meric

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/04/2023 00:28

All we need now is for BBC4 to commission a new series called 'Louis Emerick Learns Amharic In Limerick' and MNHQ will have no option but to upgrade Pedants' Corner to an entire block!

mathanxiety · 12/04/2023 00:36

Tur-mur-ik

Like murmur-ik.

mathanxiety · 12/04/2023 00:39

People who pronounce it Choo-mur-ik or tyoo-mur-ik - have you ever looked at the word written down?

It's T U R m e r i c.
There are two Rs there.

Probably Bolton sort of way? I think the usual example they give in linguistics is square and nurse. You have squr/nurse in one, and square/nairse in the other.

I find it quite difficult to imagine the different vowel sounds in fer/fur/fir, but I'm sure they do exist. A friend from Aberdeen says pork/fork/walk/talk all differently whereas they all rhyme for me.

That puts me in mind of Roger McGough reading "One Burr at Bedtime is all I Need"
