People who pronounce it Choo-mur-ik or tyoo-mur-ik - have you ever looked at the word written down?

It's T U R m e r i c.
There are two Rs there.

I'm more aghast at Chooseday.
I've always said tyoosday.

But then I also say draw-ing and exact-ly.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 12/04/2023 07:50

ter/tur for me too. Both are the same sound in my accent too.

deffo not a choo mer ick.

fancyfrogs · 12/04/2023 07:56

Choom-er-ick
And yes, I say Chooseday Grin
North east accent

pickledandpuzzled · 12/04/2023 08:03

My kids and DH say bold and bald exactly the same way. Makes me twitch. See also, tongue and tongs.

LynetteScavo · 12/04/2023 08:06

My grandmother cooked with haldi, my mother cooks with turmeric (tum-er-ic) I have only just, from this thread, realised it's the same thing Grin

Yesterday DH said tur-mer-ic, which got me wondering if tum-er-ic wasn't correct. I concluded it was, but it seems to be just me and my DM saying tum-er-ic!

That's standard in the East Midlands - and maybe other regions too.

But how do you pronounce Turn, Turing, Turban? They all have the same beginning as TURmeric.

Tuesday is different as it starts with TUE and not TUR.

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2023 09:33

Why would it be TERmeric?
Wouldn't it be TUR as in turn?

Umm, haven't we already had this conversation?😂

Yes, repeatedly Hmm. Once more for the people at the back... 'ur' and 'er' don't sound the same as each other in all accents.

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2023 09:33

*But they do in quite a lot of accents!

Redebs · 12/04/2023 09:35

Haldi 😁

SwedishEdith · 12/04/2023 09:35

I keep pronouncing the various options as I keep reading this thread. But I say choo rin for Turin. So can see a bit how you could go from choo r (soft r) meric to choomerick.

But it's pronounced more as 'tyuh-RIN' in English - not 'TER-in'. If you split the syllables, you might tackle the 'Tu' bit first (as some people say Tuesday) and then the 'rin' part.

Nobody splits turmeric into three syllables to make 'tu', 'rmer' and 'ic'. How would you even try to pronounce 'rmer'?! It's the randomly ignored 'r' that some people do that's most bizarre of all - as in 'Febuary' and 'libary'.

Dassams · 12/04/2023 09:58

How do people pronounce Turban?

Tur-ban or Choo-ban?

pickledandpuzzled · 12/04/2023 10:08

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll and that is indeed where we live. I will continue to twitch a lot!

RaraRachael · 12/04/2023 11:20

Tur as in turn sounds exactly the same as eg, ter as in term?

It doesn't in my accent. Two completely different sounds.

CraftyNameChanger · 12/04/2023 11:33

Noticeably different in mine too 🤷🏻‍♀️

Catterbat · 12/04/2023 11:43

Absolutely term-er-ic. Drives me absolutely nuts when people say choomeric, which seems the more common way up north. The only explanation I can come up with is that people are spelling it in their head without the R. So tumeric. Which is wrong!

Tuesday is different as it starts with TUE and not TUR.

But Turing is pronounced tue-ring, not the same as in turban, turn, turbulent or, indeed, turmeric! Must be on account of the tur- being followed by a vowel rather than a consonant?

Dassams · 12/04/2023 13:06

But Turing is pronounced tue-ring

Not in my accent - I say Too-ring or Tur-ing.

But definitely not Tue-ring like Tuesday

Ok, but is that the same way you pronounce turkey, turbulent, turmeric etc? I was disputing that Turing is pronounced the same as turn and turban, as stated in the post which I quoted.

Yes, definitely. See also: pure, curate, during, lure, furious etc.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/04/2023 15:33

But the 'r' is still there - just attached to the second syllable. I'd understand if people said 'tu/choo-(uh)rmiric', but the 'r' just completely disappears!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/04/2023 16:37

I wouldn't say Tue-ring, I'd say Tyaw-ring (Tyaw to rhyme with paw).

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2023 16:42

That's unusual! Do you also pronounce 'curing', 'during' etc as kyaw-ring, dyaw-ring?

Dassams · 12/04/2023 16:45

Shouldn't the Tur of Turmeric be pronounced like the Tur of Turkey?
