College, Uni, OU or anything else. How's it going? The good the bad and the obscure.

that sounds really interesting, too lollipop....however, I think you could have really done someething with your idea...you didn't have to go into a certain condition, instead you could have focussed on a certain issue, iykwim...maybe the one that would be the main one...

I hope you are happy with the choice made though, sounds a worthy story...

LollipopViolet · 30/01/2009 20:43

Oh I am. I'm keeping my idea, working on it in my spare time, because the next project is our first individual film. It's a great choice (the location swayed my vote too lol!)

Wow at the new layout!!

Fairlady, hope so! Did make me feel good bout myself, lol.

Notalone, yeah I'm really considering it at the moment. Our uni has a magazine that it prints 3 or 4 times a month that we can submit work to, but that way there won't be any photostory or point to it, other than just to show my work now and again. So I might speak to my tutor and find out more about it. However, I'm scared by the amount of work we have this semester. It's ridiculous!

I have to do a presentation and report on an era that changed photography, make 10-20 contacts which 1 of which I need to be able to work with in my placement next year, organise the plans for an exhibition, document my DD for 2 months, come up with 4 adverts for the BBC radios and chose an editorial story to do with modern living. The deadlines for these range between March and May, so doesn't feel like enough time at the moment!

Fairlady, well done! Bet you are pleased! Hope you get him to be your case study too. That will be great

LV, that sounds like a great idea. It's good to know hat you'll be working on in the future as well, so you can be prepared too

JDB, wow 2nd placement. I haven't had my first yet! I get that pleasure next year. Lol.

LollipopViolet · 31/01/2009 13:09

Posted this on SN but thought you guys might like it too.

I thought you all might like to read about one of my absolutely fantastic days.

So my mum drives me into uni, and we get stuck in the traffic jam from hell. I'm a perpetual early bird and a worrier, so this was awful, traffic as far as my dodgy eyes could see . Anyway, we get to uni bang on 9am, and luckily my group hasn't gone into lecture yet, the lecturer isn't there, so all is OK.

It's a small group, just the 4 of us who make up a crew of 5 (one lad was ill). I like these sessions, I can see what goes on and they're practical. I'm very practical so I always enjoy them.

We were in the sound studio, and as I had taken on the role of sound engineer, I had to set all the equipment up. The lecturer is great though, giving full, clear instructions, which helps enormously. When it comes to clicking little buttons on-screen, it goes like a game of pin the tail on the donkey (I even said that, I don't mind joking about my eyes sometimes). But again, lots of patience gets us there. Things like:

"Up, left a bit. Next button to the left. That's it, click there!" really, really, helped, and I don't know if he realised how helpful he was being.

So that's a Technical Instruction session from the slightly VI point of view of me

And an example of very good teaching, I think.

FairLadyRantALot · 31/01/2009 19:15

Lollipop...that is brilliant, it is great when the Lecturers help in such a constructive way.

Tammy, you seem to have so much work wiht your course...it sounds scary...but you are obviously doing realy well!
What sort of Placement will you be doing?

As for me...yeah, I am well pleased
And I am starting to come up with plans for my casestudy, but still have to find out if those would be in line with the "brief"...not that we actually gotten an actual brief...
am hoping photos would be alowed 9onbviously the pics would be of the patients hand only...it would be a great way to show any improvement in movement. And also in scar healing etc...

tammybear · 02/02/2009 12:24

LV, that's really great to hear. Wish more teachers worked like that!

Fairlady, I'd like to think I'm handling it all well! Been working on one of the projects, and have spent the morning so far "documenting" photographs of DD and DP in the snow. Been really fun. Hard to make it look less like snapshots than document photographs, but we'll see.

Hoping the snow's not going to affect college tomorrow. I know most people will want to have the day off, but I'd rather go in to be able to find out more about the brief and really get on with it.
I'd ideally like to get a placement at a studio such as Venture. That would be great to see how they photoshop their photographs, and how they work. If not, perhaps a freelancer to see how they organise their work and stuff, but with the recession, it's hard to know how much work people will be getting at this time. We shall see I guess!

Photos sound a great idea for your project btw Fairlady. It'd be a good way to show evidence and the progression like you say.

FairLadyRantALot · 02/02/2009 21:28

oh, did my first ever whole treatment line by myself...admittedly with a pro...she had a degloving injury, so, been long time in treatment and recovered fabulously.....but still cool , to do treatment on my lonesome...
also was able to look at her car, ebcause it had to be specially adjusted for her to drive it....and saw an extremely cool gadget I never knew existed...

was let home earlier today....because of the weather...

LollipopViolet · 03/02/2009 16:21

Oh there is a higher power! I've passed Semester 1, by the skin of my teeth in one module, but I did it!

And the lecture I mentioned above has offered me work experience, he runs the match night coverage for Manchester Phoenix ice hockey

FairLadyRantALot · 03/02/2009 18:36

well done Lollipop...

we are still waiting for the results of our Exhibition piece and teh Essay...apparently there are technical problems.... and grrrrrrr

tammybear · 04/02/2009 20:52

Well done LV! And ooo how exciting for your work experience.

Fairlady, sounds like you're getting on well.

We apparantly don't find out if we've passed til the end of the year Might have to ask again.

Although I got told by the tutor that I've mentioned before that's a bit incompetent that my last assignment was missing 6 parts of a checklist we were given. I could swear that I included everything that was on that list, and on a mission to prove him wrong by reprinting my work and highlight what's what and that matches to the checklist. I don't want to be marked down when I know I've done it! He also said that I'm not a "model student" because of this even though my work is well presented. I wasn't sure how to take this, and this was right at the end of the lesson and I had to run to go get DD as we were let out late. Going to speak to him more about it when I see him next, but is a bit of a kick in the gut!

FairLadyRantALot · 04/02/2009 21:09

tammy...that sounds a bit erm, out of order of your lecturer....

onlywantsone · 05/02/2009 16:20

I got my exam results today and got a 2.1 + for my first semester!!!!!!! YAY

FairLadyRantALot · 05/02/2009 18:03

tammybear · 05/02/2009 18:20

Glad not just me that sees it that way Fairlady!

Wow well done onlywantsone!! Wish we could find out our results soon!

onlywantsone · 05/02/2009 21:40

yay Im actually so so chuffed, I was dreading the post coming today

had such a terrible last 6 months with loads of other shite to deal with, cant believe I mananged the 2.1 YAY yay YAY

FairLadyRantALot · 05/02/2009 22:22

extra brilliant then

Notalone · 08/02/2009 16:31

Sorry its been ages people. I just don't know where these weeks on placement are going! I am still trying to prepare for the blasted presentation too and am sooo nervous about it all. Public speaking for me is a nightmare and I am terrified I will go to pieces.

Tammy - that sounds like an awful lot of work. And as for your lecturer . It all sounds very unfair to me. If you don't get any joy from him are there any other avenues you can take such as speaking to a head of year / personal tutore etc?

Fairlady - your placement sounds like it is going great and they must think you are good to allow you to treat patients on your own. Well done and also well done for your leaflet mark! How is your presentation planning going? We have to choose our options for later on this year and also for level 5 (next year) so am still uhmming and ahhing over these. I definitely want to do Severe and Enduring Mental Health and Health Promotion though. There is a splinting one that sounds right up your street too!

Lollipop - well done on your semester 1 mark! and your work experience sounds fab!

Hey - Onlywantsome - what great news! Well done - a 2:1 is fantastic! What are you studying?

onlywantsone · 08/02/2009 20:29

Im doing an english degree, thinking of doing a conversion course after, or a PGCE - cant make up my mind.

I need to start applying for some work experience in both schools and/or law firms...

going back to uni tomorrow, have a really light time table this term, only 12 hours of lectures per week... I shall still be sending DD to nursery for a couple of full days in order to pace myself with this terms work, we have a portfolio to do, no exams - so I need to work hard from week one so I dont have to do it all in one go at the end.

tammybear · 08/02/2009 21:17

onlywantsome, that is really good news. Yes! Start from day 1. I learnt that mistake last semester when it all piled on top of one another in the last couple of weeks.

Notalone - yeah we do have a head of year who I could speak to. I will see what happens this week. I've managed to do quite a bit of work for that module so I'm pretty chuffed at the moment. Have managed to get in touch with photographers that work for newspapers and magazines such as the Telegraph. It's been very insightful.

And I know what you mean about presentations. Last one we did we managed to persuade the tutors to allow us to do it without the class watching. But we have one again in March to do that we have to do in front of the class... urgh! Not looking forward to it, but not as nervous as I was last time round.

FairLadyRandySlut · 09/02/2009 17:19

Hi,
you know how I have been waiting for that blasted mark for the exhibition piece and reflective essay...well, the marks are in (provisional ones only)....and I have gotten an [gasp] A + how fecking unbelievable is that?????????? I mean, ya what....honest...never in a million years did I expect the combined mark to be that good...I mean...erm, wow...

Notalone, we haven't heard anything about choosing anything for next year...hmm...I am sure we will be doing that next year....but yeah, splinting sounds good....but will see what will be on offer...because of course, I am looking and possibly be doing some splinting in this placement...so, if there are other things that I would like to see, I mgiht choose that, to get a wide range of experiences....
Not really got any further with my presentation/casestudy planning...but hopefully will be able to ask the patient for permission...what with teh weather and all that...

Oh was again in the local clinic today, because we weren't sure with the weather...
Was nice to see patients again...last week there wasn't much opportunity, lol!

Oh, and our presentations will be done infront of smaller seminar groups, instead of the whole 80 people..or however many people are left....

Anyhow...must do Dinner...

LollipopViolet · 09/02/2009 19:20

Oh lord. I've got 2 huge bits of writing to do for Scriptwriting tomorrow, and no motivation because I hate the lecturer...HELP!

FairLadyRandySlut · 09/02/2009 20:03

oh no.....what sort of thing have you got to be writing about ...

LollipopViolet · 09/02/2009 20:59

I've basically got to write 2 treatments, so scripts in story form. I just...hate the sessions, cannot be bothered and would rather go to bed. He hasn't even taught us this, just put stuff on Blackboard (he was off last week and just put on there that's what he wanted). I've read the stuff but...urgh.

FairLadyRandySlut · 10/02/2009 06:41

2 treatments?? What like for illnesses/conditions? Sorry....if I am thick...
