College, Uni, OU or anything else. How's it going? The good the bad and the obscure.

JDB, you are busy

Well, I had my first day of my Placement, and I think it went well, lol...I do hate first days though, lol...!

LollipopViolet · 15/01/2009 18:32

I've got a new job So I'll be having a first day again soon. I'm starting research for my film pitch "What's it like to be dyslexic?"

FairLadyRantALot · 16/01/2009 19:35

lollipop, great news on the new job ...is that the one at Alton Towers?

As for your project you will find loads on that, I think...good topic!

Well 2. day of placement and I am loving it! It's just so so different to the nursing I have done...you get to talk to your clients and stuff...and, in your first placement that is actively encouraged. Had my first supervision, and my Educator said that she thinks I am fitting right in and will settle in quickly. Also got some " compliments" on doing things without having to be asked...i.e. she explained stuff to me yesterday, things I can do, so I did those when I saw them needing doing. Felt already much less than a spare part.
I think my previous doubts about doing the course are gone again...it so is what I want to do!
Notalone, how are you getting on?

Ssorry I have been so rubbish at posting lately. Placement is exhausting! I am still really enjoying it though and hopefully am doing ok. I have been doing lots of activities with patients this week and been on some community leaves. Before the end of placement I am going to facilitate a group (scary!) and I also have to do a presentation on what I have learnt on placement to the department (double scary!)

Fiarlady - you did exactly what I did. I had a wobbler before placement too where I doubted myself but once on placement I felt a lot better Glad you are enjoying it. Educators love someone with initiatve (my educator actually sad last week "Thank god - a student I don't need to spoon feed for once!") so if you keep doing what you are doing you will pass with flying colours. Wat sort of patients have you met so far? How long is your placement?

Tammy - there is nothing worse than a tutor who doesn't know what is going on. Hope you are doing ok considering. Everyone is in the same boat so maybe you could help each other.

Osmosis and Lollipop - well done on your results. Thats amazing!!! Is your DH ok now Osmosis?

JDB - I have heard that after placement uni is the boring bit! How did babysitting go?

Notalone · 17/01/2009 10:35

Sorry - you wouldn't think I was a uni student with my spelling

FairLadyRantALot · 17/01/2009 17:30

lol ntalone...just blame the keybard, that is what I do...or the red wine

I have seen people with wristfractures and people that had carpal tunnel surgery, a young girl who was born with a finger that doesn't quite work right, but the consulatants are puzzled what it is. We also had a little boy in who was born with a very rare syndrom, which, among other things, effects his hands. Oh and many clients seem to have arthritis.
I love it that I can actually talk to the clients and find out about them and stuff. The whole attitude is so different compared to nursing. (ANd I don't mean that nurses wouldn't love this one to one, just that it is so impossible to have that, iykwim).

Anyway, Kids are killing eachother, or at least trying to...so, better intervene!

FairLadyRantALot · 18/01/2009 21:44

oh, meant to say yesterday, we have to do a case study of one of our clients, and present it to our educator and than to some fellopw students!

onlywantsone · 19/01/2009 14:10

DD and I are so bored... can't wait to get back to uni... any one else the same?

Notalone · 19/01/2009 19:28

Yes, that is roughly what we have to do too along with the what we have learnt speech. How long does yours have to be Fairlady?

when do you go back onlywantsome? Health care courses have been back for about 3 weeks now. I have been v jealous of those with longer holidays

onlywantsone · 20/01/2009 12:26

don't go back til Feb 9th, so DD and I spending quality time together which is lovely, but am missing the adult interaction.

FairLadyRantALot · 20/01/2009 12:47

oh dear onlywantsone, are there any groups you could take your dd too, where you can get a bit more adult conversation?

Notalone, our presentation has to be 30 minutes long! yikes!
Still absolutely loving Placement. My educator is so lovely! And it's so interesting!

tammybear · 20/01/2009 17:31

Wow onlywantsone, you've got quite some time off.

Notalone and fairlady, glad to hear your placements are going well

I've finally handed all my projects in. Today was the last deadline for three assignments, and last Friday I had two due in, so been busy! I am so thankful it's over with. I've done double the amount of work everyone else has done though . Was up til 4:30am finishing stuff off. Just glad I'm mostly happy with it, and it's done!

Now onto semester B... Lol! Though I found out one of our full days may be a half day from now on. Would be lovely if it was, though they said we'd have to come in the afternoon which is annoying, as I'd like it if we could go in the mornings so I could pick DD up from school, but never mind!

Hope everyone is good.

FairLadyRantALot · 20/01/2009 20:24

tammy, gosh, that many assignments due so close together...that is scary stuff!
As for teh half day, but afternoons, that seems silly, but I suppose is all about rooms availability and staff availability ...still a pain if it would work out like that!

Done some research today about the kind of conditions/injuries we are dealing with in the Hand therapy department. Will tomorrow summarise my findings! That was the free study my Educator and I agreed on!

LollipopViolet · 20/01/2009 20:35

Sorry not been on for a while, busy bee I am! I'm going to ring my old school tomorrow, to ask if their SENCO would talk to me about dyselxia, the testing, what people with it find hard, how certain things can help etc. And I need to sort out doing a visit to talk about my course.

We had a student rep meeting today and had a right moan about one of the lecturers, we're just not happy, and hurrah something's being done about it!

tammybear · 21/01/2009 13:11

It really was Fairlady. Our tutor is quite strict as well, as others usually give you til Friday to hand it in, but ours wanted in Tuesday. But least it's done and I don't have to worry anymore! :D
And yeah it is a bit. Plus, as our time is being reduced, I'm wondering what exactly we're going to be doing, and what all my money (well student loan) is going towards but shall find out on Tuesday I guess when we start Semester B. Scary to think we've already completed one!

LV, glad to hear that something's being done about it. We've got a couple of tutor's who we're not happy with, but not sure what we can do about it really. Well, I find them alright, but they are quite forgetful and disorganised. For example, one of our assignments we were told was due in 23rd Jan. But then we were told on the 14th, we had to hand it in on 16th Not good.

LollipopViolet · 21/01/2009 17:17

Yay! I have returning employee training on 7th Feb, then start training every Thursday on 12th Feb. No lectures but may need to be organised with shoots etc.

FairLadyRantALot · 22/01/2009 22:31

HI again,
have finished my "summary" of several conditions...ended up being 10 pages but about as many or more conditions and not all tightly typed...iykwim...
Had a student group today, so was able to catch up with some others fromt he course, which was nice....anyway....must go to bed!
Oh, just had message on nile that results for the leaflet (which counts for 80% of that module) will be released soon...woopie....should find out if I should pack me bags, lol....
Supervision tomorrow, and not really as prepared as I wanted too, due to the condition search/research/summary taking longer than the allocated 3 1/2 hours...I would say I spend about 8 on that....lol...what with reading it all and all that!
Oh, and today we had a client who would be ideal for my case study, so am hoping he will agree to that!
How is it going for everyoe else?

tammybear · 23/01/2009 21:21

Sounds cool LV

Fairlady, you sound busy!! But hope he agrees to be your case study and supervision went well.

I had a talk with my tutor today over my assignment, just as a review. He said it was good from a glance, and would have been happy if the rest of the class had submitted work similar to mine, so I took that as a compliment and that I must be on the right track But he suggested I should do more of my own personal projects (like I have the time!!) and that I should consider starting my own magazine, if I collabrated with some of the students doing journalism or something, which would be a way to get my work published. It's an interesting thought. No idea who or where the journalism lot are, and also what I would do... so something to consider at the moment

FairLadyRantALot · 23/01/2009 21:53

oh tammy, he obviously thinks you have potential!

Day and Supervision went well! We have formulated some goals now.
Oh had a go at that biometric computer and it was cool. The games are very old-kind-videogames and cognitively easy, but that is of course on purpose, as it is more about hand movements...was able to try out all sort of different attachments....it was really quite fun!

lollipop...hope all goes well!

JDBfangirl · 25/01/2009 16:26

Fairlady, your placement sounds really interesting, am glad you are enjoying it.

We're back out again very soon. This block has been a bit rubbish, a lot on research methods which is impossible to make interesting.

I get two days community exerience with this placement which I'm looking forward to. When we finish this placement it will be the Easter holidays ARGHHHHHHH how scarey!

Have just about got my head around what I need to do for health profile thats due in before placement... or at least I hope I have.

Hi Fellow Students

30 minutes Fairlady??? Wow - I thought mine was scary! What sort of visuals are you thinking of doing? I will probably do some sort of powerpoint and am trying to think of something else that may be a bit different, but not had a brainwave as yet! Your placement sounds fab - has your client agreed to you doing your case study on them yet? Mine has and I have done loads with him this week. He told me he has told the Dr that I have been really good with helping with his meal planning and I didn't even bribe him! . He has also agreed to me sitting in on some CBT sessions with him which is gonna be great. I have to take the lead in ward round on Tues in relation to this patient - am a bit nervous!

Tammy - that magazine idea sounds amazing and would look great on your CV too. Your feedback on your assignment sounds really promising too - well done!! Any news on that potential half day yet?

Lollipop - thats good that something is being done. Its hard being honest but worth it if you can. Let us know how it pans out.

JDB - what is your next placement? I loved that I pod shuffle thing on Facebook but couldn't figure out how to get it on mine. Shame cos some of the answers were really funny based on my I pod

FairLadyRantALot · 26/01/2009 19:06

Notalone...erm, visuals? I suppose I could try my hand on a Powerpoint/Slideshow.....
Tbh, I am not sure if we are not just meant to talk about it....we had 2 Casestudy presentation from year3 students, and they just talked us through it....there isn't any guideline, so, will have to find out.
The Patients isn't in until next week (as he has got a Consultant appointment, etc...and can't really do much yet wiht his hand anyway, as the stitches are still in and stuff, so, won't be able to ask, but doubt he will mind...am hoping he isn't, lol!

JDB, wow, back at placement soon again....I think our next placement will be in the beginning of teh 1. semester of the 2. year!
What will your next Placement be?

LollipopViolet · 26/01/2009 20:57

Did my pitch for our non-fiction film. Did mine on invisible disabilities. Everyone said it has potential but needs narrowing down to one condition, so we'll see whose idea the group votes for. I know whose I will be.

FairLadyRantALot · 29/01/2009 21:13

Lollipop....why couldn't you do something generic...why do they feel they need to narrow it to one condition?
I think it sounds like a really interesting idea to do invisible disabilities...and I assume it would be the issues, attitudes of others, etc...

Anyways, finally found out where to find our results (had been looking in the grades section within our OT section and in the assignment section of teh modules...I mean, obviously I am stupid )
Well, got an online link for the Universities results site....would have been nice if any of the tutor would have told us about it ...grrr...I mean, honest...
Well, it's a provisional grade but it's a B- for the leaflet...so, am very pleased

Anyhows...how is it going for you all?

LollipopViolet · 30/01/2009 19:38

Fairlady, I think it's because for a 5 minute film it'd be hard to go into detail about more than one condition really, although I could've pitched it as a mini-series lol!

Anyway, we're doing a film on a local pub. It's threatened with demolition, but here's the thing, there's an 85 y/o war vetran who was moved from his house because of the same redevelopment scheme. If the pub goes, he won't be able to see any of his friends So we're focussing on how the redevelopment of the area is affecting local people, and businesses.
