How old is the child who coloured this picture in?

I’ve seen these threads on here before and now I’m interested in hearing the replies for my own child.

I drew the aeroplane, my child did the rest - colouring in, extra squiggles on top, selecting the colours and where to put them. It’s felt tip.

How old so you think this child might have been?

Once we get a few replies I will come back and share the reasons I’m asking.

i think this is an older child, maybe 10 or so. Younger children tend to colour in by circling, not the side to side strokes here. Also the windows are very neat for a young child.
Colouring in is, in my not humble opinion, a very low level skill. Pencil control can be practised in more creative ways that stretch a child's imagination rather that just occupying them. Let them draw their own picture.

I work with pre-schoolers. Some enjoy drawing their own pictures, some don’t, but like to sit and colour. The table is there for them to choose.

My immediate thought was 4 years old

Mine has just turned 4 and has started to colour like this in the last two weeks. She probably would have run out of energy to do the whole plane though.

Namechangedagain999 · 21/07/2025 21:02

I don’t care. Who would?

WitchyWitcherson · 21/07/2025 21:02

I was shit at colouring as a kid, I'd have coloured like that when I was about 6 or 7. My DD can colour like that now aged 3.

It would be easier, for everyone, to just say in the opening post, "This is by my 7 year old, i'm worried about motor skills. Is this within the realms of normal for her age or concerning."

Edited

Hallelujah.

The OP is likely to get more sensible replies if they were to say something like this.

when it’s written like this OP, we all know it’s almost certainly a humble brag.

My DH colours like this now, no patience, he is undergoing ADHD assessment though...

5 /6
no vision issues so their eye test done for this year 😉

Reception.

Or a 50 year old artiste, who knows?

hyggetyggedotorg · 21/07/2025 21:10

I’m going to say about 8. This isn’t 3/4. Children that young don’t reliably colour within the lines.

The people saying 1/2 are you parents? My DD who is artistically gifted & studying art at uni didn’t colour like this as a toddler FFS!

mummydoris2006 · 21/07/2025 21:14

I'm the only non artistic sibling and my DD is an adult now so I can't remember what her colouring and artistic skills were like tbh.
My DN is 6.5, in year 1 and everyone who sees her artwork comments on how good it is and her school report is absolutely glowing about art. I'll be honest I never really took much notice if she was good or not just how much she loves it, but going from her skills I would have said age 3, colouring in is always neat and within the lines and ahs been for a number of years now.
Seeing the varying answers just shows how different everyone is though and what different skill sets we all have 🙂

You shouldn't refer to your husband as a child.

Calliopespa · 21/07/2025 21:20

I think about age 3 -5

I said 2ish. My unartistic daughter was colouring in like this before 4. 4 seems fair enough, but a child with good motor skills could do it younger I think.

Whatsitreallylike · 21/07/2025 21:21

My DD is newly 3 and this looks like hers from a colouring in the lines perspective. The colour coordination not so much, so I’d guess 4.

Yes they do, not all children but some do. My just turned 5 year old colours much better than this and could have done this age 3. She’s not a genius and definitely not the only one in her reception class who can colour neatly. It doesn’t mean she is going to grow up to be gifted at art like your dd is, she’s just good at it now and maybe she’ll be good at something else later on.

Yes, some children will not challenge themselves and prefer to occupy their time with low level skills.
Some activities are more worthwhile than others in terms of development and education, colouring in is ok to occupy a child but is not high quality learning.
