How old is the child who coloured this picture in?

I’ve seen these threads on here before and now I’m interested in hearing the replies for my own child.

I drew the aeroplane, my child did the rest - colouring in, extra squiggles on top, selecting the colours and where to put them. It’s felt tip.

How old so you think this child might have been?

Once we get a few replies I will come back and share the reasons I’m asking.

That is really good for 3,5 indeed!

@Puddlewoman No not worried at all, but trying to understand what’s what I suppose. What is a ‘good’ attempt by a 3.5 year old... I was more just surprised as before this I had mainly just seen a lot of scribbles.

I think that is incredible. My grandson is nearly 5 and it's pretty scrawly. I thought that pic was done by a 6 year old.
👏👏 Good job little one.

These types of posts are really, really shitty. Putting your child's art work on the Internet and asking for it to be judged is horrible. No different to a man putting pictures of his wife out without her consent and asking people to rate her.

KiriG · 22/07/2025 19:50

I’d guess around 5 for a developmentally normal child doing their best colouring. This is also based on assumption the child attends school or is working in home education following national curriculum vaguely as opposed to starting writing later (eg at 7, the Scandinavian way).

This.
With respect, OP, no one else is really interested. I’d be more impressed if you said he was saving his pocket money to give to charity or something like that. But he’s done some colouring in to a fairly standard level for a 3-4 year old 🤷‍♀️.

Chinsupmeloves · 22/07/2025 20:10

I would say a very careful 3 year old to a scribbler aged 15

llizzie · 22/07/2025 20:11

Coloring inside the lines isn't usually developed until 4/5 years old.

Sometimes it's around 3 and sometimes it's never.

ClaredeBear · 22/07/2025 20:29

That’s some really impressive colouring from a 3.5 year old! Is it artistic - or it is a sign of excellent focus and accuracy, I wonder?

DonnyBurrito · 22/07/2025 20:52

I'm interested in children's drawings.

I think the level of concentration (and ability to sit still) shown here is remarkable for a 3.5 year-old and his fine motor skills must be good. He's clearly put effort into this. I'd be interested and impressed by it too. What's his personality like?

BertieBotts · 22/07/2025 21:21

I think they just develop at different rates. Here are three pictures coloured by my children.

The orange blob (sausage on a fork) is by DS3 aged then just 3.

The colourful tram is by DS2 aged 6.5.

The one which is just random scribbles is also DS2 just before his third birthday. He couldn't colour in at all really until later on and he only started drawing things which were recognisably things rather than scribbles at about age 4.5

Thats excellent for 3.5 OP. My son's 5 and colours like that and he's the child of two professional artists lol. (Although I was terrible at colouring in at that age too, much preferred drawing!)

AngryBird6122 · 22/07/2025 21:46

I think it's very good for 3.5 but that's compared to how my DS would have done at that age - everyone will think differently

Thanks for the replies. The child is 3.5.
I just posted because (1) I’ve seen others do it and thought, why not? (2) My son has shown zero interest in colouring or drawing and now, all of a sudden he seems to want to really try and concentrates on it well. So his ‘artwork’ has gone from just a few squiggles on the page to (what I thought was) relatively neat colouring in just a short space of time.

Oh… so not an exciting revelation here 🙄 I was kinda hoping you’d say it wasn’t even a child, it was your dog- or something more impressive 🤣

I think it is very neat for your little ones age! Nothing wrong in being proud of your child's achievements. My little granddaughter who is neurodiverse and hyperlexic has been reading from the age of two. She taught herself after playing with electronic toys that taught her how to pronounce letters. Mt dh noticed it 1st when she was looking through a book of animals and came across Emu She knew most of the animals in the book so we just assumed she had remembered their names but when it came to Emu which she had never seen before she read it out loud as m u phonetically. My dh told her it was Emu and then she remembered after that. Her parents told nursery she could read and they just sort of nodded in agreement. I expect every parent thinks their child can read to a certain extent. Anyway one day a nursery staff member saw her reading the back of a book with no pictures. So the staff got a white board and wrote some simple words on it. Cat, dog, cow, that sort of thing. My dgd just rattled them off so they wrote longer words Butterfly, caterpillar and xylophone and of course she read all those too. When her mum came to pick her up from nursery school the staff couldn't wait to declare to her that dgd could indeed read. She reads titles on the television too but insists on their phonetic pronunciation! Sadly her communication skills are lacking but we are getting there.

I’d say 7 as in the lines but not perfect

It really doesnt matter the age, some kids are artistic - some arent.

Ooh we have something in common judging by our usernames

T1Dmama · 23/07/2025 14:16

Well I think that’s very good for 3.5… lots of kids start school not even holding a pencil correctly and having very little control.
