Eggs in porridge

I came across a recipe online that stirred an egg into porridge. This sounded vile to me at first but the recipe insists you can't taste the egg. My toddler is quite a fussy eater but one thing he loves is porridge and will eat it with almost anything mixed in: mashed banana, grated carrot with raisins and cinnamon, grated apple and a spoonful of peanut butter, raspberries mashed through with honey, etc.

I can mix a lot of things in that he wouldn't eat if they were given to him otherwise. He'd never eat apple or carrots for example. I also mix chia seeds and flax seeds through. It's great bang for my buck given the rest of his meals can be tricky.

Has anyone ever mixed an egg into porridge before? Is it utterly vile? I hope it works as it's another easy way to get e and nutrients into him!

I think it's widely accepted that eggs are very good for you. Thanks for your input though.

I guess you know better than the world renowned nutritionist and author whose site I linked to, where he details the latest research into many different types of food.

I think a whole egg mixed in would be too much for a toddler portion of porridge but maybe a yolk if you're desperate to get more protein/fat in.

It'll be disgusting if it scrambles though so watch the heat level so it's soft boiled consistency.

Baked porridge needs an egg and you can’t taste it. My egg averse daughter ate it happily.

Sounds grim.
But if you don't believe a dodgy bowl of porridge will stop him eating the other varieties, I'd give it a go. The possible benifits could outweigh one awful meal!

To answer your question OP, no you won't taste the egg, but if the porridge is too hot and you don't stir enough, the egg will scramble and you will get eggy lumps.

Ah yes, a nutrition site that doesn't link its sources, makes claims so vague they can barely be even tested, and posts mainly videos, because after all, that is how Proper Scientific Research is done innit?

It's so poorly written I do genuinely wonder at anyone who takes it at face value.

"Those consuming the amount of cholesterol found in two Egg McMuffins or more each day appeared to double their risk of hospitalization or death."

So just levels of cholesterol regardless og egg consumption, can't actually say for sure if the risk doubled, if it is relative or absolute risk, or if it's risk of hospitalization or death. Is it actually a parody site?

Op are you worried about lack of protein?

I'll definitely do a test run myself first!

I'll have to try it tomorrow out of sheer curiosity and post my verdict.

Ok so maybe stir in well, but after the porridge has stopped cooking perhaps? And like a PP mentioned, probably don't bother with a whole egg, just the yolk.

I'm definitely trying this.

PP, eggs are not really bad for you.

OP, it sounds like it might end up rather like egg custard combined with porridge and quite nice, especially with the cinnamon.

Protein wise he only eats chicken in soup (not bad at all as I can get lots of veg in this way including lentils), fish fingers and chicken nuggets (of course 🙄) and sausages and bacon. The bacon I limit to him having a taste of a rasher cut up every now and again.

He also eats hummus by the tonne weight and peanut butter so that's good.

Eggs are such a good food and he won't touch them at all. He used to eat French toast but has refused it for a couple of months now. Has asked a few times for a boiled egg (because of Mog the cat) but then won't eat it.

I keep cooking these things for us and putting them out for him too in hope. But so far nope.

Rice porridge (congee) is a staple breakfast/meal/comfort food in lots of parts of Asia and sometimes has egg either cracked and mixed in or served as a kind of condiment. It’s really yummy and nutritious.

As long as you don’t have the pan too hot your egg should just cook into the milk, think how custard or carbonara is made.
