Eggs in porridge

I came across a recipe online that stirred an egg into porridge. This sounded vile to me at first but the recipe insists you can't taste the egg. My toddler is quite a fussy eater but one thing he loves is porridge and will eat it with almost anything mixed in: mashed banana, grated carrot with raisins and cinnamon, grated apple and a spoonful of peanut butter, raspberries mashed through with honey, etc.

I can mix a lot of things in that he wouldn't eat if they were given to him otherwise. He'd never eat apple or carrots for example. I also mix chia seeds and flax seeds through. It's great bang for my buck given the rest of his meals can be tricky.

Has anyone ever mixed an egg into porridge before? Is it utterly vile? I hope it works as it's another easy way to get e and nutrients into him!

@ForeverFat24 YES! the egg in mashed potatoes is absolutely a game changer

Oh well, that proves it! I guess we should just ignore the studies done by experts over years looking at thousands of people nutrion and food data.😂

I get it, you don't want eggy porridge. That's fine, you don't have to.

For myself though, whilst I sometimes make poor food choices, I'm not going to worry about the eggs. We get to do our own risk assessments just as you do.

Somehow that seems far more palatable than it in porridge, but logically it's not much different!

Lolling at eggs being bad for you 🫣🤣
I eat 3 eggs every day and have lost weight. Go figure. Protein gains.
I would try the egg, not the same thing but I whisk an egg into mashed potato and it makes it super creamy and you can't taste it! Just make sure you do it when it's done cooking and not too hot (but hot enough to cook the egg with residual heat) but not too hot it scrambles.

That sounds amazing! How smooth does the mashed potato need to be? I have perpetually lumpy mashed potatoes so I might struggle with whisking anything into them - would it still work?

Anyone can call themselves a ‘nutritionist’.

Yes. But this chap is one.
He was expert witness for Oprah Winfrey in a case regarding food. As I understand she is one of the richest women in the world. Do you think that her legal team picked him because he was some random calling himself a nutritionist OR perhaps they found a leading expert in his field?

ForeverFat24 · 01/03/2024 20:53

Haha. Can thank slimming world for the Egg and mash tip 🤤

dsan · 01/03/2024 20:53

Anyone else craving scrambled eggs now?

JulesJules · 01/03/2024 20:53

Well this thread has been truly eye-opening. Who knew that the unassuming egg, a mainstay in all our kitchens for hundreds and hundreds of years was so utterly lethally lethal. No wonder all our ancestors are dead.

SemperOmnibusFacultas · 01/03/2024 20:54

You can also add an egg to black coffee and it isn't noticeable. Agree with mash potato.

Definitely in porridge, but don't let it boil.

RobinHood19 · 01/03/2024 20:54

Btw, you do seem a little brain dead, you might want to get that looked at...

You might want to take a basic course in research methodology so you can learn what a citation actually is. Because a google link isn’t one. This is the type of really, really basic knowledge a lot of people lack, leading in “nutrition facts dot com” suddenly becoming a valid source.

(And I was actually vegan for health reasons for a very long time so I could even agree with you on the eggs... Still, you don’t really know what you’re talking about.)

As soon as you drain your potatoes just mash them like mad and then whisk an egg and mash it in.. takes alot of mashing but it's yummy 🤤 sooo creamy and nice without the added calories from milk and butter.

who cares about the eggs, i'm an oatmeal expert!
i get my oats from a sasktchewan mill, organic stuff sold in 20 lb bags.
btw it stores perfectly well in the deep freeze along with my dead relatives who ate loads of eggs ;).

Imagine living in a world where you worry about eating an egg. Don't suppose my 95 year old grandmother ever worried, she was just glad of any food on the table!

My 90 year old grandmother was premature and had any extra egg added to her bottle. Hasn't done her any harm!

bakewellbride · 01/03/2024 20:55

After learning that the egg industry crushes and gases all male chicks to death (as they are of no 'use') I never ate another egg ever again.

StarShipControl · 01/03/2024 20:57

You need a Baked Oats recipe.
Here's one but you can make it with anything. I made blueberries and coconut one recently. So delicious.

Are you vegan? But even that isn't cruelty free.

Will definitely try this. For us, not my son. He won't eat potatoes in any form. Not even chips ffs! I despair.

I recommend the big fuck off potato masher from IKEA. Best masher around.

Isn't egg in porridge a Ghanaian thing? My friend is from Ghana and the cuisine generally seems to include a lot of eggs, including in porridge. I think it was something she gave my dc when younger. Can't say anything about the flavour as I loathe oats but if he's eating porridge and carrot he can't be too hard to please!

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 01/03/2024 20:58

@Ilovemyshed at 95 maybe she did die prematurely and could have made it to 114 or 117?? those darn eggs

I guess I would probably trust peer reviewed research articles published in the BMJ rather than random nutritionists.

Conclusion of the above study:

Conclusions Results from the three cohorts and from the updated meta-analysis show that moderate egg consumption (up to one egg per day) is not associated with cardiovascular disease risk overall, and is associated with potentially lower cardiovascular disease risk in Asian populations.

Porridge seems to be the exception hence why I'm ready to throw everything but the kitchen sink in it!

OP does he like banana?

One of my DDs favourite foods as a toddler was 'banana pancakes', just 1 mashed banana mixed with an egg then dry fried in little spoon sized dollops. Honestly I did not like them, tasted like banana omelette but she thought they were wonderful.

Another one that still goes down really well is eggy bread. I use whole grain seeded bread because it's what we have in the house, beat an egg, coat the bread with the egg mixture and then fry with a very small amount of olive oil. Apparently it tastes better if you cut it into fingers.
