Eggs in porridge

I came across a recipe online that stirred an egg into porridge. This sounded vile to me at first but the recipe insists you can't taste the egg. My toddler is quite a fussy eater but one thing he loves is porridge and will eat it with almost anything mixed in: mashed banana, grated carrot with raisins and cinnamon, grated apple and a spoonful of peanut butter, raspberries mashed through with honey, etc.

I can mix a lot of things in that he wouldn't eat if they were given to him otherwise. He'd never eat apple or carrots for example. I also mix chia seeds and flax seeds through. It's great bang for my buck given the rest of his meals can be tricky.

Has anyone ever mixed an egg into porridge before? Is it utterly vile? I hope it works as it's another easy way to get e and nutrients into him!

The other thing you could try is scrambled egg mixed with hummus?

Such a shame when one relentless crank trys to ruin an interesting thread. I'm going to try this with my grandson he likes porridge but otherwise has a very limited palate.

AdoraBell · 01/03/2024 20:32

Sounds awful to me but as your DS accepts everything mixed into his porridge then try it.

We decided to take this post down as it may mislead our readers and the link to the website is no longer live.

None of those hyperlinks in the text you quoted link to a study that demonstrates what is being claimed. That is what I mean by "citing sources".

Anyway he's right, I had an egg yesterday and now I'm dead.

Laughing so hard at this! 😂

I guess you know better than the world renowned nutritionist and author whose site I linked to, where he details the latest research into many different types of food.
Are you a nutritionist also?

Anyone can declare themselves to be nutritionalist in the UK. It doesn’t mean they have any qualifications or knowledge.

You know better than the guy who has devoted his life to studying the effect of food on humans?

🤣

Er... sure thing buddy. You keep eating those eggs, don't you worry yourself about the heart disease, cholesterol and increased risk of cancers.

Eggs are high in cholesterol, but eating eggs does not adversely affect cholesterol in the blood for the majority of people. I’ll take the risk that I am the majority of people thanks and stand by the fact that they are one of the best foods we can eat.

Of all the responses I thought I was going to get, killer eggs wasn't it.

I thought it would just be a thread of people saying "sounds absolutely vile" 😂

I would like to see a dedicated egg alert thread. In the meantime, the eggs in porridge sounds ideal for the weather at the moment.

Hermione101 · 01/03/2024 20:38

I do this for my kids, but only mix an egg yolk in porridge, it makes it very creamy. I haven’t tried egg whites, but think they may scramble in porridge.

I had two killer eggs today 😂

I doubt this would work. Hummus to him is a specific tub from our local supermarket. We went to a Greek restaurant today and he got hummus and flatbread. "That's not hummus! I don't like it!" he protests. It had whole chickpeas on top and drizzled with olive oil.

He ate the peanut butter sandwich and yoghurt I brought as a back-up 🤦🏼‍♀️ At least it's wholemeal seeded bread.

This is completely wrong. Eggs raise cholesterol and increase risk of heart disease.

I've been eating eggs for breakfast for years. I recently had a health check and my TC:HDL ratio is excellent.

ditalini · 01/03/2024 20:39

Sorry to abet the derail op, honestly my last post on the subject but I know that a lot of people lurk on MN and health misinformation isn't a joke. If anyone's worried about the Greger eggs bollocks:

And a million other reputable sources.

Blimey! How worrying.

I think you might also find this concerning

Wow, that's eye-opening.
I'm never touching that stuff!

Imagine living in a world where you worry about eating an egg. Don't suppose my 95 year old grandmother ever worried, she was just glad of any food on the table!

hobbledyhoy · 01/03/2024 20:44

Who knew eggs could be such a divisive issue?...

whatahat · 01/03/2024 20:44

@TheLittleRedDragon I have never heard of choline toxicity. It is a necessary nutrient for fetal development. I think it's worth checking a few other sources before making your mind up. For instance:

From ACOG: www.acog.org/womens-health/faqs/nutrition-during-pregnancy#:~:text=Choline%20plays%20a%20role%20in,%2C%20soy%20products%2C%20and%20peanuts.
What is choline and what foods contain it?
Choline plays a role in your fetus’s brain development. It may also help prevent some common birth defects. Experts recommend that you get 450 mg of choline each day during pregnancy.
Choline can be found in chicken, beef, eggs, milk, soy products, and peanuts. Although the body produces some choline on its own, it doesn’t make enough to meet all your needs while you are pregnant. It’s important to get choline from your diet because it is not found in most prenatal vitamins.

Oh well, that proves it! I guess we should just ignore the studies done by experts over years looking at thousands of people nutrion and food data.😂

That's the first link you posted, that I commented on - did you not understand that? - and the same comments stand. There are numerous claims on that page.

What source is cited for the claim "Those consuming the amount of cholesterol found in two Egg McMuffins or more each day appeared to double their risk of hospitalization or death."?

Does he mean relative risk or absolute risk? Was the study looking at people who actually consumed egg mcmuffins, or the equivalent cholesterol from other sources?

You do seem to suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect. I hear dihydrogen monoxide can help with that.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 01/03/2024 20:49

who cares about the eggs, i'm an oatmeal expert!
i get my oats from a sasktchewan mill, organic stuff sold in 20 lb bags.
btw it stores perfectly well in the deep freeze along with my dead relatives who ate loads of eggs ;).

Lolling at eggs being bad for you 🫣🤣
I eat 3 eggs every day and have lost weight. Go figure. Protein gains.
I would try the egg, not the same thing but I whisk an egg into mashed potato and it makes it super creamy and you can't taste it! Just make sure you do it when it's done cooking and not too hot (but hot enough to cook the egg with residual heat) but not too hot it scrambles.
