Eggs in porridge

I came across a recipe online that stirred an egg into porridge. This sounded vile to me at first but the recipe insists you can't taste the egg. My toddler is quite a fussy eater but one thing he loves is porridge and will eat it with almost anything mixed in: mashed banana, grated carrot with raisins and cinnamon, grated apple and a spoonful of peanut butter, raspberries mashed through with honey, etc.

I can mix a lot of things in that he wouldn't eat if they were given to him otherwise. He'd never eat apple or carrots for example. I also mix chia seeds and flax seeds through. It's great bang for my buck given the rest of his meals can be tricky.

Has anyone ever mixed an egg into porridge before? Is it utterly vile? I hope it works as it's another easy way to get e and nutrients into him!

@TheLittleRedDragon are you aware of the criticism of his research and his increasingly worsening reputation from health experts?

That's not say he u wrong about anything/everything but you should at least research the people you champion.

You want to say what it is? Or just suggest there is...criticism, without coming up with the goods

moderate egg consumption (up to one egg per day)

One a day doesn't seem that moderate to me.

OP does he like banana?

One of my DDs favourite foods as a toddler was 'banana pancakes', just 1 mashed banana mixed with an egg then dry fried in little spoon sized dollops. Honestly I did not like them, tasted like banana omelette but she thought they were wonderful.

Another one that still goes down really well is eggy bread. I use whole grain seeded bread because it's what we have in the house, beat an egg, coat the bread with the egg mixture and then fry with a very small amount of olive oil. Apparently it tastes better if you cut it into fingers.

I tried those banana pancakes before. Was a hard no. I can see why! He likes bananas on their own or mashed in porridge. He likes normal pancakes too (sometimes).

French toast was my go-to meal for getting eggs in him but he's boycotting it now 🤷🏻‍♀️

@TheLittleRedDragon Honestly you sound like a nutter! Shove a scotch egg in your gob and shut up. No one here is interested in your quack 'best selling author & nutritionist' ramblings. Prince Harry's Spare was a best seller as well by the way. Make of that what you will...

Back on the actual topic at hand. I put eggs in my baked oats OP. Do you think your son would eat them baked? A bit of cherry jam or banana and cinnamon, very tasty.

You can also add an egg to black coffee and it isn't noticeable. Agree with mash potato.

Definitely in porridge, but don't let it boil.

Black coffee?! Dear God in heaven!

Who the fuck eats 2 or more egg mcmuffins a day, what a weird way to gather evidance about the benefits or negatives of eggs in the diet. Presumably people eating egg mcmuffins everyday are eating lots of other unhealthy shit. I don't think mixing a fresh egg into porridge compares somehow.
Disclaimer, I don't like eggs.

Anyone can declare themselves to be nutritionalist in the UK. It doesn’t mean they have any qualifications or knowledge.

None of those hyperlinks in the text you quoted link to a study that demonstrates what is being claimed. That is what I mean by "citing sources".

Anyway he's right, I had an egg yesterday and now I'm dead.

I just laughed out loud at this 🤣

My toddler will not eat eggs at all so I might try this and see if I can "trick" him 😁

PP has linked to a recipe for baked oats. Definitely will be trying that. I've never heard of it before! I've been missing out. Do they come out like a muffin?

Egg emulsifies in many things, coffee, oil etc. We were made to have a raw egg in the morning a few times per week throughout childhood. Basically a runny zabaione , yes, including a dash of booze!

Would your DS like overnight oats or does the porridge need to be cooked? Mine, now older, makes overnight oats for breakfast with yogurt, berries, seeds etc

StarShipControl · 01/03/2024 21:08

@Yourethebeerthief no, it's not cakey as there's no flour in it. It's like a sturdy delicious porridge.
I make it in a big dish for breakfast some days.
There are so many different recipes all over the Internet.

I've used this one too and swapped a few bits

Loved this thread! We are vegetarian and DC1 loves eggs and so do we so great easy protein source. Unfortunately DC2 had a mild egg allergy and now has completely grown out of it at 2 but will still not eat anything egg-based except for quiche and very recently now also will eat eggy bread. He used to love omelette too and american-style pancakes but recently now won't eat those either. My eldest is generally pretty fussy but likes egg any way at all so it's really annoying that the youngest won't eat them tbh!

Alas he also will no longer eat porridge and neither will the eldest but I might try it sometime for myself!

Yourethebeerthief · 01/03/2024 21:10

@ForeverFat24

Our only egg recipe that he liked was French toast. One egg, splash of milk, cinnamon. Whisk with a fork and dip bread in.

The trick I find is don't use too much milk. A wee splash is plenty. And also don't soak the bread in it. A dip on either side to coat is enough. That way it goes nice and crispy at the edges (fry in butter on a low heat)
I also use brioche bread rather than a normal loaf and drizzle honey on top. It's the business.

Little bugger won't eat it anymore 😩

I've also just remembered he used to eat egg fried rice! I'll need to keep trying to re-introduce these meals again.

My 90 year old grandmother was premature and had any extra egg added to her bottle. Hasn't done her any harm!

That's fascinating! I've never heard of this

Of course raw egg white is not advisible for babies due to salmonella! Soft boiled and mashed with whatever milk the baby normally has would be what you'd do these days. However, the high nutritional value of eggs was recognised back then.

I get it, you don't want eggy porridge. That's fine, you don't have to.

For myself though, whilst I sometimes make poor food choices, I'm not going to worry about the eggs. We get to do our own risk assessments just as you do.

Cool.

Risk assessments involve knowing what the risk is.

I've had loads of people saying they think eggs are really healthy. I'm just pointing out that they are wrong (and may want to reasses risk in light of the evidence).

You want to eat stuff that increases your risk of heart disease, cholesterol and cancer, that's up to you. But do it knowing what you are doing, not doing it thinking you are on some sort of health kick.

Will definitely try this.

I know there's a trend for overnight oats but I think they're vile. I like my oats hot.

Well this thread has been truly eye-opening. Who knew that the unassuming egg, a mainstay in all our kitchens for hundreds and hundreds of years was so utterly lethally lethal. No wonder all our ancestors are dead.

No wonder people get heart disease, heart attacks, cancers...

Lol egg yolks are high In cholesterol but it doesn't have the same effect of cholesterol in the blood the same as other saturated fats. Do your research properly before coming on here and trying to preach.

Oh the irony.

You only had to google him 🤦🏻‍♀️

But sure.

  • he's been pulled up for cherry picking data to make his claims look good in his books
  • his "study" on plant based diets was found to be inconclusive and so poorly run that the evidence is useless
  • he claimed meat consumption reduced testosterone and when pushed, his study turned out to be one man, and that one man had lowered it other ways
  • he claimed high oxalate vegetables posed no risks to kidneys despite it being well documented that they do, and the source he cited said the opposite of his claim!
  • he's stated a plant based diet reverses type 2 diabetes, based on a study of white rice and refined sugar

Is that enough of a starting ground for you?

Yourethebeerthief · 01/03/2024 21:15

@Kalevala

Oh absolutely. I'm just fascinated by the things they used to do back in the day! I went down an internet rabbit hole recently on the history of pap and gruel as infant food.

Eggs are high in cholesterol, but eating eggs does not adversely affect cholesterol in the blood for the majority of people. I’ll take the risk that I am the majority of people thanks and stand by the fact that they are one of the best foods we can eat.

Even nine out of ten studies funded by the egg industry show that eggs raise cholesterol.

To be fair it does sound vile, but needs must with a toddler

Yes, this is why he is writing about catching an illness from eggs which doesn’t happen in the UK because chickens are vaccinated against it.
