Parents of girls, what word do you use for vagina? I have a baby girl and can't remember what we used growing up!

I just don’t understand why you can’t say vulva/vagina. 🤷‍♀️

2bazookas · 15/11/2021 14:10

Vagina, of course.

Vulva and vagina...

IHateCoronavirus · 15/11/2021 14:32

I work with small children, there is a wide rage of names used to refer to vulva/vagina. Some of the common ones I’ve heard:
Fanny
Flower
Minnie
Winky
Foo foo
Foof
Lady places
Front bottom
Generally people who work with small people can understand what they mean in context.

Exactly.

If a child went to a parents, relative, doctor, teacher, police officer etc and said that someone had touched/hurt her foofoo, they are hardly going to turn around and say "since I don't specifically know what area you are talking about, I am going to ignore you"

Jujujuly · 15/11/2021 14:43

I find “bits” just gross. For some reason it makes me think of it being disassembled somehow, like it’s just a collection of random body parts down there.

Kids don’t have the same associations as adults do when it comes to words. There’s nothing inherently more complex or clinical about the word vulva than the word Minnie - both 2 syllables, easy to say. It’s adults that have hang ups about it, not children, and by giving them some kind of cutesy euphemism you are conveying the message at best that there is something wrong with the correct term, that it makes people uncomfortable. Why should it?

EishetChayil · 15/11/2021 15:10

Vagina.

We don't use twee euphemisms for her arms or feet, so why her vagina?

Branleuse · 15/11/2021 15:17

Because there arent any commonly used ones for arms and feet really, yet i expect you know what it means if someone says belly or tummy, boobs or bum

@thepeopleversuswork

Your post has summed up exactly how I feel about the situation! Don’t have a girl (yet?) so hasn’t come up but I have thought about wtf I would do for all the reasons you’ve said and haven’t really found an answer except probably using vagina because fanny (which I used growing up) makes me die inside with cringe. It’s a shame because I think Willy is a fantastic word for penis. Would have been nice if there was a reasonable, nice universal term for female genitals for children to use, a “Willy” equivalent.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 15/11/2021 15:24

“Vulva” is something i havenever heard in my life except on MN

Wow, that’s pretty shocking.
halloweenqwueeeen · 15/11/2021 15:52

We’ve gone with ‘private area’ DD is only 2 but knows it’s hers and no one else should touch it.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 15/11/2021 15:52

If you want to empower DD to talk about her genitals, she needs a socially acceptable term (foof here).

If she refers to her vagina, vulva or cunt (!) and gets a negative reaction, which however wrongly , she will from some people, she won't feel she can talk about that body part any more.

Bit much to expect the toddler to counter by saying "well that's the anatomically correct term and I'm sticking with it!".

Fanny is the equivalent of willy. The anatomical terms for all the genitalia just dont sound nice to my ear.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 16:18

@MotherOfCrocodiles but what’s socially acceptable about ‘food’ and not vulva? Also if everyone using different terminology it just becomes massively confusing, I would have no idea what a ‘foof’ is. What’s not socially acceptable about the correct terms?

Jujujuly · 15/11/2021 16:37

Why is vulva not socially acceptable? It’s just a word. If people used it more then it would be less surprising to hear it.

Somethingsnappy · 15/11/2021 16:59

@WorraLiberty

To all those who insist on only the correct anatomical terms, do you also tell your children to make sure they wipe their anus properly? I’m guessing bottom or bum are ok? And tummy for abdomen/stomach. So why not similar for genitals?

That's so true @thehourwaslate! 😂😂

I bet there's not a single person on this thread who tells their child to wipe their anus, instead of bottom or bum.

I was thinking exactly the same thing!
Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 15/11/2021 17:41

Fanny is the equivalent of willy

Yes but I just think Willy is a nice word and fanny is mortifying snd I don’t know why

Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 17:52

@WorraLiberty I think the problem is there’s not just one universal nickname that’s well know like Tummy or Bottom, there’s a hundred different frankly stupid names like foof or minnie that are not universally recognised.

Bimblybomeyelash · 15/11/2021 20:46

@MotherOfCrocodiles what?! I can understand why some people are happy using their own ‘names’ for their genitals, but I can’t understand why people have a problem with others using vulva.

VikingsandDragons · 15/11/2021 21:27

Vagina. After reading how it's the #1 thing a parent can do to protect their child from sexual abuse (abusers are less likely to target children who can confidently speak about their anatomy and use correct terms, as they are much more likely to report it to a grown up) there was just no way I felt comfortable not taking that step.
