Word for vagina?

Parents of girls, what word do you use for vagina? I have a baby girl and can't remember what we used growing up!

To all those who insist on only the correct anatomical terms, do you also tell your children to make sure they wipe their anus properly? I’m guessing bottom or bum are ok? And tummy for abdomen/stomach. So why not similar for genitals?

That's so true @thehourwaslate! 😂😂

I bet there's not a single person on this thread who tells their child to wipe their anus, instead of bottom or bum.

We don't get hung up on boys calling their testicles 'balls'

It would be odd to teach a small child about his “balls” rather than his “testicles” though.

I was in my twenties before I knew what a vulva was and labia. I still don’t know how to pronounce them despite being over 50. I have never heard someone say the terms out loud to me.
So, please please provide your daughter with correct vocabulary and pronunciation

So help me MNs
Do you say LAB-I-A or LAY-Be-a or something else?
And I assume is VOL-VA as in Volvo ?

God this is embarrassing to admit

PoppyMonth · 15/11/2021 10:57

I think it's that the slang words for vulva/vagina are so bloody awful and twee.

Minnie/flower/nunnie/tinkle (OMG, that's the worst)...

I don't have girls but we always said willy/balls to our sons so I can fully understand the wanting to use a slang name rather than biological. There is no question that our sons knew a willy is a penis and balls are testicles. Girls can use a nickname and still be taught the correct name.

There seems to be this self-righteous thing on here that applies to naming female genitalia only, and that you're fuelling self-loathing/misogyny if you use anything other than vulva and vagina. We also say boobs/wee/poo. How weird would it be if we said, 'I'm just going to urinate quickly before we leave...', 'I need a stool'...

I think I'd use fanny, although it's not great.

It's pronounced labbiah and vUlvah. Not sure why you'd think it's vOlva!

TheGirlCat · 15/11/2021 11:02

It's LAY-bia and vul-va.

PoppyMonth · 15/11/2021 11:04

Yes, sorry - don't know why I put labb...it's Laybia

DipperandMabel · 15/11/2021 11:05

Foo or floof!

womaninatightspot · 15/11/2021 11:13

Generally we went with privates for boys and girls. They know the correct names though. Vagina/ vulva/ penis/ testes. Most often used after a wash in a please go get your pyjamas on nobody wants to see your privates.

Phrowzunn · 15/11/2021 11:17

My 4.5yr old says poo bum and pee bum 😂 don’t really know where that came from, just something she decided. My 2 year old uses hoo-hee but she has lots of strange words for all kinds of things…

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 15/11/2021 11:21

Vagina and vulva

popapoppadum · 15/11/2021 12:46

Correct names or if you have to use something else at least make sure it's a well known name like willy etc.

Knowing the correct names might have helped save my friend from a decade of sexual abuse by her father. She didn't realise it was wrong until sex education in early teenage years.

And for the poster who said that a parent could clear up any confusion over a name a child has used: that doesn't quite work if the abuser is the parent does it?

SugarlumpsesBumpses · 15/11/2021 13:09

I use Fanny with my now 14 month old as that is our local slang word, but will also teach vagina from the time she can say it properly so as not to confuse.

RightsHoardingRaptor · 15/11/2021 13:32

We called it a winky which seems odd now as that sounds like a Willy. Anyway, we call it a doo da but also, a vulva / vagina. Dd knows both words and if asked to describe anything knows the real words. Nothing wrong with both

Fanny is so grim
dorris88 · 15/11/2021 13:35

Wow - sad times for you getting an unnecessary lesson on your own autonomy. People are so obsessive on here lol

You can define yourself as genderless but you are an absolute witch if you call your vulva a mini to your kid.

I don't even refer to mine as VULVA cos that sounds like a fuckin car.

I call it something completely different to my husband.

CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT - LIVE AND LET LIVE.

RightsHoardingRaptor · 15/11/2021 13:35

Just realised we also call it a Vagoogle, from the Melissa McCarthy film!

We have that spelled out on the fridge in magnetic spaghetti letters. See, you can prefer a fun word and not be a prude!

dorris88 · 15/11/2021 13:39

I sometimes call mine a vageena george.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 15/11/2021 13:40

@Helpstopthepain

My awful ex used to refer to our dd’s ‘bits’ Confused he was an absolute twat though. He hated that I said vagina.
Haha! We use bits. Bits is the general term for the whole area. Within the bits, boys have a willy and testicles and girls have a vulva and vagina. Rarely do we need to get specific.
PlasticFreeIn2022 · 15/11/2021 13:47

We use front bottom (vagina) and back bottom (anus). My little girl is 2.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 13:47

I mean wtf, ‘bits’? How is that helpful to a small child trying to describe something might be wrong? And no differentiation between anyone’s ‘bits’? 😳

fuckyourpronouns · 15/11/2021 13:48
**@ncnewbaby* but god forbid something happened to your child (sexual assault or inappropriate touching) and they tell a teacher that they've been touched on a insert childish name for vagina* how do the police or you know exactly where the touching has happened? Muffin could mean anything etc
🙄. You would expect that someone in the police who heard that a little girl had been touched on their "muffin" or whatever other name it might be, to ask the child to point to where she means and ask for some further details. It's not difficult.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 15/11/2021 13:51

Child: my bits hurt Parent: oh no, where abouts? Child: here points

Or

Child: my bits hurt
Teacher: Oh no, where specifically?
Child: the bit I wee from
Teacher: no problem, let's call your parents

Generally works just fine

Please don't teach vagina, unless you're referring to her internal passage. Please use vulva.
