5 reasons I hate Babywearing

  1. As it is so easy to feed on the move I can't make DH go to the supermarket during busy times just because she is due a feed.
  1. As it keeps them so lovely and warm I have not used any of the lovely snowsuits or jackets I bought and was given and they just sit sadly in my hallway gathering dust.
  1. It takes hours to get anything done as you are stopped all the way round the supermarket by cooing grannies telling you how wonderful and comfy it looks and how sweet and cosy your DC looks.
  1. I always need a pound coin as I only need a shallow trolley for the shopping when I only have DD2 and I never have one on me.

and the fifth and final reason I hate babywearing is

  1. It always puts them to sleep, even when you want them to stay awake to try and stagger nap and feed times!

Thinking about it I do have another mei tai and I got a length of material with some velco and used it as a strap to join the straps together and also as a 'catch'. I'd loop it around the strap and use it to pull it nearer me, might that be an option?

And Ally, you are nuts. I went to sainsbos yesterday which is normally deserted and it was PACKED. Luckily though I dont have to do shopping this year as am off to MILS for someone esle to cook and clean

Yes, trousers between legs and carrier. The edges of the carrier are quite taut as they are taking a lot of weight obviously. Is it supposed to be for younger babies, do you think? I couldn't find the articles about the maker on that site. I will have another look.
Thanks Be, maybe after Xmas? Both my boys have colds, so do I - hate to pass it on for Christmas!

ok twinkly. is he on front or back?

I do have some babylegs but found that they gapped at the exact place where the straps went. SO I bought legwarmers from Primark for a quid that worked perfectly!

He's on front. I tried back but am just too scared, he nearly fell off while I was trying to figure out the straps etc. Also I wanted to use it when collecting Ds1 from school, which would mean balancing baby on back on the pavement, not keen on that idea!

See what you mean about the 'catch' thing I think, Chirpy. I thought of making a joiner section like the Ergo has.

ocomeALLYebabies · 21/12/2007 09:04

good idea!

got npthing to do today except getting christmas pressie for mum and dad, really struggling to find anything, not done boys stockings or anything, feel totally useless and unmotivated (is that a word?)

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 21/12/2007 09:10

Have they got a digital radio? That was my 'brainwave' last year. I was stuck this year though. 2 digital radios are not needed

ocomeALLYebabies · 21/12/2007 09:17

YES, THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE GETTING ME, THINK A SHOPPIN TRIP IS NEEDED. oops just noticed caps sorry. guess i'd better get dressed and go

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 21/12/2007 09:22

Good luck!!

ChirpyGrinch · 21/12/2007 10:51

Just got back, that was NOT fun. People panic buying bread and milk like the world is about to end

I made presents this year, I made tomato chutney and white choc and cranberry fudge, which took one afternoon pottering around the kitchen chopping and stirring, bought packaging from lakeland online and have just posted off the last of it (yes I know its late but they aren't home over christmas so it's intentional!)
Am never going back to buying anything, it was too easy this year!

With putting him on your back practise is all you need, I was terrified of putting DD1 on my back but I wore her around the house and put ehr on over the sofa for a few days and after awhile I could swing her up in the middle of a carpark and not be worried! You'd be surprised how easy it is once you are used to it!

Thnaks, I expect I will get used to it...I am still looking at other carriers, is there a similar one to this, that is maybe narrower in the leg region, with a different strap arrangement? Thinking Ergo or Yamo possibly?
Is the Meitai the same shape, just with fabric rather than straps?
I am so confused!

Joppe · 21/12/2007 11:05

Ahhh. This threat is making me all nostalgic. Dd is now too heavy to be carried (other than very occasionally), but it's one of the things I remember about when she was little with so much pleasure. Fingers crossed that ttc will work out that go through it all one more time...

ocomeALLYebabies · 21/12/2007 11:30

the straps are made of fabric twinkly. very very comfy.

got thema presesnt was manic and freezing, my hands are like ice blocks, both the kids are seriously doing my head in today, when is it my turn to go back to work

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 21/12/2007 15:53

Well done Ally! I think I have solved the strappage problem

I found some info on the 'Beco' sling, which is very similar. It has detailed instructions so I could compare.
The difference it has is that the strap adjusters/connectors are at the sides, rather than where the side straps meet the shoulder straps, so you can reach them and adjust/connect once sling is on iyswim. It also has a joiner strap between the two shoulder straps, so you can wear it with each looped over its 'own' shoulder then connected above shoulder blades with the other piece, or can be used in a crossover format.
I found some old bits of strap the same gauge as the existing side straps on mine, and also some spare clasps which must be from an old buggy or something, also the same sort of size as what it already has. I sewed the female part of the existing connector to on end of this spare bit of strap, and the male part of the spare connector is attached to the other end but adjustable iyswim. Same with the second length of strapSo I have two, each about 18" long.
Then connected them to each side strap in turn, so the side straps are effectively now adjustable at either the side of the carrier or the bit where they join the shoulder straps.
I can now get it on and off with great ease!

I expect that all makes no sense whatsoever, but hey it works

ChirpyGrinch · 21/12/2007 19:36

Ooh, get you! Are you channelling Blue Peter?!

Seriosuly though, am glad you have found a way to use the carrier, they do come in handy!

Joppe, fingers crossed for you that you can have a great excuse to pay more slings

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 22/12/2007 06:21

I am not that good!

Saying that, has either of you made your own? I am quite inclined to try if I can find a pattern.

ocomeALLYebabies · 22/12/2007 07:35

its a fab site but you have to join. i'm looking into making one, just cant find any material i like!

JingleBelgoHoHoHo · 22/12/2007 07:55

Hi everyone
Ally, when's your scan? Are you still baby wearing comfortably during pregnancy?

ocomeALLYebabies · 22/12/2007 09:28

friday 28th....my birthday!!

i haven't got much of bump yet so am able to still wear both, but not for very long. can carry ds2 all the time still.

ChirpyGrinch · 22/12/2007 10:40

I do have patterns for a pouch sling or a ring sling I am happy to mail out, or look here for some great patterns.
I have made a pouch (disaster!) but not a mei tai yet....am waiting for perfect material to come along

Ally, I wore DD1 on my back until I was 8 months, it actually helped keep me standing upright so stopped me getting backache!
