Hi Lissie. I'm hardly a full-blown success story, but we're going through it at the moment.

A few weeks back, I decided to stop procrastinating with DS2 too; he wasn't keen on the idea, so I just told him that the next day, he would no longer be wearing nappies during the day, as he was now a big boy.

I stayed in for first couple of days, just putting him on the potty every 15 mins. Also kept a diary like this:

Time Potty Accident

After a couple of days, we had more ticks in the potty column than the accident column.

He has since learnt a degree of bladder control - whereas at first he was weeing every 10 mins, he can now go 2-3 hours.

He's been in pants ever since, and I can take him out and about (just make sure he wees before we go, and whenever there's a suitable time).

Only downside, is that he hasn't been asking to go - apart from when he's just started - and then been able to stop himself, with a "oh no, I just weed in my pants".... so I can hardly say he IS potty trained yet. However, yesterday he told us on 2 occasions that he needed the potty, so things are looking up!

Phew... HTH - and didn't bore the pants off you!!!

Hi Lissie. My DS is 2.4 and we started potty training two weeks ago. I work fulltime in the evenings so we decided to gradually train as I am only at home with him during the mornings and then need to take him either to nursery or grannies. He is doing really well. To start with we just let him run around bottom half naked and kept reiterating with him that he must sit on the potty if he needed to go. We also had a little treat box so that everytime he did a wee on the potty, he got rewarded for it. He knows exactly when he feels the urge to go and runs to his potty and does the necessary, then we take it to the loo and he flushes it away. We are today trying to get him used to wearing pants as we too went and got him some special big boy pants. We have had a few accidents in them this morning as he still goes to sit on the potty but forgets to pull his pants down. We have just tried to make it as fun as we can and not so that it feels like a chore and he seems to be getting there. His nappies are getting so much drier during the night now too, so I am hoping by chrimbo he will be completely dry and nappy-less! Seems only yesterday I was taking him home for the first time and now look......

DS is very nearly 3

lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 15:45

lol, he's pretty good, tells me he needs a wee (is 2y6m) and a poo, we've already had some toilet moments but ive decided that this week is the big one and he can have all my attention so we are just going for it. seems v grown up and scary tho

OP posts:
MrsCellarfullofbones · 21/10/2007 15:47

Good luck! I do find it easier, carting a potty everywhere (he's only just starting to stand up at the loo - and doesn't always manage to wee this way), than changing a nappy. And yes, he does seem more grown up - and somehow more cute because of it!

lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 15:47

so do i leave him naked on the bottom half tomorrow and tues then?

OP posts:
lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 15:50

lol, we have put a little seat on the toilet for him so need to get a potty to carry around

MrsCellarfullofbones · 21/10/2007 15:56

If he's going by himself, I would. I only didn't because mine needed prompting, and because he still went to Nursery twice a week - but they carried on doing what I was doing, so he only had 1 accident there.

If he prefers a toilet seat, you can buy a fold-up one for out and about (think mine was from Blooming Marvellous). However, some MNers aren't that keen - they do slide around a tiny bit - ideally you have to plonk your DC on it, so it doesn't slide!

I think my DS would be happier about standing, if he were tall enough! You can imagine, that by the time I've held him up, it's not very comfy for him - except at home where he's got a buffet.

MrsCellarfullofbones · 21/10/2007 15:59

Forget that about toilet seat - they now sell a plusher, padded one.

Mine's a toodle-loo but does the job fine.

lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 16:01

its silly, im so excited and scared at the same time!

Hi lissie

I started DS in the summer hols and he's fine now. I asked him every 15-30 mins whether he needed to go.

out and about - I took a potty at first until he became more confident, now he loves weeing in the street

Dungarees - am avoiding so far, but am as I love them

lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 17:39

My DD 2.4 has been being trained since august. She still has at least one accident a day and has only just started to use the potty to poo in.

My 2 DS's were much faster than her, but I was much more rigid and strict with them. I followed the advice in 'What to Expect -The Toddler years'. It was good advice and I needed it as I was a complete novice.

I am now much more relaxed with DD, as I know she will get there in her own time. Wet clothes are a pain but they never killed anyone. I have also thrown away soiled pants. I think the most important thing is to be calm, patient and not bothered by accidents. It is also important is to give lots and lots of praise for any achievement.(from just sitting on the potty to the ultimate achievement- a poo!)

I have bought about 30 pairs of pants, and also have 3 potties so she always has access to one.

Whimsy · 21/10/2007 18:41

lissie I'm going to start with ds2 tomorrow, shall we do it together

lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 22:24

wheelybug · 21/10/2007 22:29

OOH I might be in tomorrow too. Tried a few months ago and dd could hold it, knew when she wanted to go but refused point blank to sit on potty/toilet so I gave up for a while. She has been refusing (and I have tried all manner of bribes, rewards etc) - she discovered the barbie/disney princess aisle in woolies yesterday so I said she could come and pick ANYTHING from that aisle if she used the potty this week (and I abhor barbie but am desperate) and she has agreed. Will see tomorrow though. She is 2.8 .

wheelybug · 21/10/2007 22:30

Oh damn. She's 2.9 even more

lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 22:33

lol, so at least 3 of us starting tomorrow! i have promised ds a train if he wees on the toilet all week.
