i give in. i have been delaying potty training for a while now, ds is now taking his nappy off to do a wee, so as this week we are both on half term i am doing it. no going back. hopefully by this time next week he will be wearing the nice new pants he has picked out and telling me when he needs to go, but im scared. and clueless. i need tips and support and telling exactly what to do, and when to do it.

please help me.

Thank you bagpuss. The gin is indeed assisting in the memories of the giant Noahesque flood of piss fading away.

(a bit).

I am so glad to have found this thread!!! Wish I'd found it on Monday - we started training then too. DS is 2.10. I feel like a first timer really as DD trained at 2.3 in two days. With DS, today we have had several wees on the potty (2 wee accidents, 3 poo accidents). My main problem is that all successes have been after I have suggested using the potty - if left to his own initiative, he would just wee on the floor. Does this mean he's not ready?

tkband3 · 24/10/2007 21:44

Also agree on the night-time front. DD1 stopped wearing nappies (on her own initiative) when she was about 3.6. She'd never had a dry nappy in the morning, but with her, I reckon she was just lazy and weed in the nappy cos it was on. We lifted her for a while, but now leave a potty in her room in case she needs to go too early (i.e. before I want to get up ). When she stayed with my mum, she took herself to the loo in the night, but in our house, she has to walk past my bedroom so she always pops in to wake me up on the way .

I don't drink, so am working my way through a large bar of galaxy .

morning all. cheekygirl, my two are not really going on their own initiative - DT1 managed it just the once, but other than that, I'm reminding them at regular intervals. I'm just focusing on the fact that they are performing in the potty when reminded and not on the floor in between (well at the moment anyway ). This morning, DT2 was jogging up and down on the spot so I asked her if she needed a wee - she said no, but was happy to sit on the potty and promptly performed. So I think it's all part of the training process - making them aware of how feels to 'need' to go to the loo and then where they go when they feel the need (IYSWIM ).

Good luck for today everyone!

bagpuss · 25/10/2007 09:06

Morning! Dry night here and all wees in potty or toilet so far. Had to rinse out one pair of pants though as he forgot to tell me he needed a poo . I thought I'd had a real breakthrough yesterday too! Oh well, onwards and upwards I say.

Welcome CheekyGirl. Our dses are the same age. Not sure about readiness as I think you can only really assess it once you've done a few days and can see if they are getting better or not.

lissiethevampireslayer · 25/10/2007 10:38

ive found that when ds is busy playing he forgets to go. tis quite frustrating!

Slubberdegullion · 25/10/2007 13:54

I think I might put our training on hold here.

Complete potty refusal with a 'Jesus In the Temple' righteous fury moment with potty being overturned and flung across kitchen.

I might just go back to sitting on the potty whilst the bath is running and chill out on all the frequent potty sits for the rest of today.

tkband3 · 25/10/2007 15:34

We've had a mixed day so far today. We've had friends round, so lots of distraction and we've had lots of puddles. But also quite a few wees in the potty and one poo from DT1 . It's still only happening when I remind them though.

Have two parties at the weekend and really need to shop for presents, cards etc tomorrow. Not sure if I can handle Brent Cross with 2 potty training toddlers - will be tempted to put them in pull-ups for the outing...would that be a dreadful step backwards?

tkband3 · 25/10/2007 18:22

I GIVE UP!!!!!!!

I seem to have spent the whole day clearing up puddles, or emptying potties. They have no idea of what they are doing, until they're doing it. I had one poo in the potty, but then another from the same DT about an hour later in her knickers. After 4 days we have made no progress and I can't cope with the thought of being housebound any more. They aren't ready yet, and we will try again at Xmas.

I'm v. annoyed and fed up and am finding it hard not to show this every time they have an accident. So it's nappies again from tomorrow morning and we will be able to go out .

lissiethevampireslayer · 25/10/2007 20:39

i really dont blame you ladies who have given up. it is tough and its so difficult to know when the time is right. you are the mum, you know when they are ready, why put yourselves under unnecessary pressure!

im feeling a tad smug. one accident all day (ds was playing first thing this morning) and we have been to the town for 2h, nothing. and the rest of his wee's have been in the potty. he's even gone over to the potty to do them. im so proud of my lil man!
someones getting a new train tomorrow!

Slubberdegullion · 26/10/2007 13:58

Afternoon everyone.

Oh lissie, you and your brilliant ds have definately cracked it.

We are going to go back to just potty sitting at bath time, and there is a potty in the play room and by the telly 'if the mood takes us'.
I knew dd2 was going to be a different kettle of fish to dd1, so different tactics required.

lissiethevampireslayer · 26/10/2007 14:02

i dont blame you, you know when its the right time!

bit deflated now. my moron of a mother came over 90mins late, ds was on the potty, she waved a toy in front of him, he got off and promptly weed on the floor. then coz mum was 90mins late we were late going to the shop and he p*ssed on the floor in woolworths. im so hacked off. i go back to college on tuesday and im really worried about it.

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 26/10/2007 19:25

No, don't be deflated, he's doing really well, this is part of the process (says she who has put training on hold).

It sounds like he has really grasped the whole concept, now is the fine tuning period.

I remember months after training dd1 (and thinking everything was sussed) her producing the most gigantic wee in the bed area of Ikea. I had no change of clothes, nothing to wipe it up with, (it was quite high up in the list of most embarrasing events since having children). Thankfully a friend came to the rescue.

Don't worry, the accidents will lessen

Now, more importantly do you have a restorative and 'inflating' G&T to hand?

bagpuss · 26/10/2007 19:41

Oh, I agree with Slubber. He has done so well Lissie, don't undo all your good work now! He will get used to it - I think with ds1 I was really nervous and used to put him in pull ups for long outings until he was 3 ish even when he was trained and didn't need it.

Have had a bit of a bad afternoon today. 2 poo accidents in the space of a few hours. ds2 had missed his afternoon nap and was really just not with it all afternoon. He was so upset when I changed him too and kept on saying "sorry, mummy" . Has been a lot better since though so I am sure it was just a momentary lapse .

seeker · 26/10/2007 19:55

You can either potty train and have lots of wet pants, wet beds, wet carpets, wet car seats and lots of stress, or you can leave it and wait until dc says "I need to do a wee, mummy" and goes and does it. No stress, no accidents - sorted. There is no rule that says a child "should" be using the loo at a particular age - some are younger, some are later - they all get there and there is no need at all to train them. It's a developmental stage - you don't train them to walk do you?

lissiethevampireslayer · 26/10/2007 20:01

i have a beer! on the upside, he did a poo in the potty. his first. and he sat on the potty specifically to do it!

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 26/10/2007 20:09

Well I think 1st poo in potty is def. something to celebrate.

Have you something along the highly calorific and yet extremely tasty (I'm thinking pringles. I have prigles atm) to accompany your beer?

lissiethevampireslayer · 26/10/2007 20:19

i have crisps, jalapeno peppers and dark chocolate
