Just make sure the potty is always in sight of DC! It can be moved to the bathroom later.

maisiedaisy · 21/10/2007 22:54

My plan is to leave her naked from waist down, have potty in room and put her on it every 10-15 mins. Give her a sweet every time she sits on it regardless of whether she does anything or not.
Anything else I need to be doing?

lissiethevampireslayer · 21/10/2007 22:56

sounds like what we'll be doing!

We have begun, nothing actually done on the potty yet, but no accidents either. Well he has only had his nappy off for 20 mins but has sat on his potty twice by himself, which is a start

MorocconOil · 22/10/2007 08:48

Lissie, DS1 was 2.7 when we started. It took him 2 days. We did it on holiday in Spain. It was hot so he was practically naked for the 2 days. We just kept putting him on the potty every 15 minutes or so, and gave him heaps of praise. I think he was more than ready to do it which made it so easy.

DS2 was 2.1. He went straight on the toilet with a seat thing and skipped the potty. We had a downstairs toilet then which really helps. It took about 3-4 months before he was dry all the time. He probably wasn't really ready. Dh and I weren't at work during this time so we were able to be very relaxed with him.

DD started 2 months ago and still has regular accidents.

I remember finding the whole process very daunting with DS1, but now with number 3 am much more philosophical about it all. How many incontinent 4-5 year olds do you see? They all get there in their own time and it's not worth getting stressed about.

Good luck to you all starting today. Remember keep calm and praise, praise, praise.

Whimsy · 22/10/2007 08:55

We have had our first ever wee on the potty Except he shot straight over the potty and onto the floor, he managed to get a little in the potty. Lots of praise given and I didn't mention the puddle on the floor, DS1 did however and kept shouting but mommy he did it on the floor

lissiethevampireslayer · 22/10/2007 09:31

oooh congrats lilwhimsy!
well, ds has just sat on his potty to drink his tea and eat his toast. nothing yet, but im optimistic.

we live in a bungalow, so i think today and tomorrow we will use the potty then at the weekend move it into the bathroom.

Hi, we started last week with ds2 (2.3). He is now dry by day and night!

He is still pooing in his pants though , so I'm now looking for tips on how to deal with this.

Good luck everybody. The first week is always the hardest in my experience but you will all get there .

lissiethevampireslayer · 22/10/2007 10:00

thanks bagpuss, havent even thought about night time!

Whimsy · 22/10/2007 10:03

So Bagpuss did you start with no nappy at bedtime straightaway?
Two wee's on potty now although the second started off as an accident and he finished it the potty

prettymum · 22/10/2007 10:03

hello everyone dd turned 3 last wednesday, our last few attempts have failed, only every got her to wee on potty once!

so this week we want to potty train her and get it over and done with, so im going to take her nappy off now and see how it goes.

bagpuss · 22/10/2007 10:30

Hi Whimsy, no we didn't. In fact I still haven't braved a nappy free night yet. He just has incredible control it seems. I really need to buy a new waterproof sheet first before we attempt forgetting the nappies all together. Also we use cloth nappies and I have just been putting him in a really lightly stuffed pocket to counter any accidents at night but he just never uses it. He does wake up early to have a wee though. I hadn't really set out to lose the night nappies at all but it just seems to have worked out that way.

My big tips are to put them in pants straight away but forget any other clothes on the bottom half for the first few days. Stay in and give it your full attention for a week. We put a bin liner over the seat of an armchair and then a towel on top and let ds2 sit on that so that any accidents were easily cleared up. The potty went in the middle of the living room floor for a few days so that it was obvious. I have since moved it to the side of the room and plan on ds2 using the downstairs loo this week. I also bribed ds2 with a chocolate button every time he was successful on the potty.

Whimsy · 22/10/2007 10:37

Good luck prettymum
Thanks Bagpuss, I had heard that some people leave the bedtime nappy off straightaway, thats what I thought you'd done. I am aiming just for daytime at the moment

lissiethevampireslayer · 22/10/2007 10:39

thankds bagpuss, some fab tips there!

wheelybug · 22/10/2007 12:06

wow ! Sounds like you're getting on really well Lissie. Well done Lissie's DS !!

We're doing OK - in that, dd still wanted to try this morning (a BIG step forward), put on her pants and tried on the potty. Nothing since - no trying, no accidents... This is what happened last time so I fear we may be going down the same road and it'll be nappies back tomorrow. She doesn't react very well to the 'making them sit every 20 mins' method as this is what put her off last time so am trying to 'trust' her.....

We did manage to go to a friend's this morning to feed her cat and then pop into homebase but I really want to go down the road to the shops but daren't until she's expelled some fluid one way or another....

Slubberdegullion · 22/10/2007 12:11

I will shortly be picking the dd's up from nursery and then dd2's (2.5) training commenceth.

I have new (disney princess ) pants.

I have big sheet of card to create personalised star chart with.

I have reward smarties also.

I have sought out all the muslins, and got from garage secondary washing up bowl, and carpet vanish for accidents.

I have 2 large bottles of tonic water (in fridge) and a new bottle of Sapphire gin on standby.

Anything else?
