i give in. i have been delaying potty training for a while now, ds is now taking his nappy off to do a wee, so as this week we are both on half term i am doing it. no going back. hopefully by this time next week he will be wearing the nice new pants he has picked out and telling me when he needs to go, but im scared. and clueless. i need tips and support and telling exactly what to do, and when to do it.

please help me.

have you read cod's bootcamp thread?

IKWYM about needing to go out. i have to go shopping, might leave ds with dh for an hour, he should be ok....

I scanned it a while back.

To paraphrase it's straight into pants (no pull ups) and regular sittings down on potty, until success, and then mucho praise.

repeat as necessary.

wheelybug · 22/10/2007 12:15

I tried all Cod's tips the first time I tried to potty train dd and tehy just made her worse. She is in a league of her own for stubborness !

lissie, do you have a pottette?

dd1 when I trained her was less than enthusiastic about the potty (particularly when she got it stuck on her head and we had to tin snip it off), but she loved her pottette.

wheelybug · 22/10/2007 12:34

Right we're out of the game !! DD clearly got to the point where she needed the potty and asked for a nappy. I tried to encourage her to use potty but she went off on one - I showed her the f'ing disney princess toys on the internet to show her what she could have if she used the potty. I then showed her the smarties and a nappy and got her to choose. She chose the nappy but is now tantruming about wanting the smarties. Sigh.... sigh..... sigh.....

Slubberdegullion · 22/10/2007 12:37

wheely, I stick my smarties on the star chart. But with spaces. so it goes:

Wee/Poo = sticker on chart
Wee/poo = Sticker
wee/poo = remove pre stuck on smartie off chart.
repeat

And stick chart well out of reach!

Worked well with dd1 as she really wanted to work towards getting the smarties (that were in plain sight all the time).

Right off to get the DC.

wheelybug · 22/10/2007 12:39

Sadly incentives don't seem to work here - star charts don't work (hmm will think about sticking them on the chart). DD has weed in her nappy that she demanded so she knows when she needs to go and can control it but just WON'T SIT ON THE POTTY..... Arrrghhh...

wheelybug · 22/10/2007 12:40

what do you use to stick the smarties on ?

bagpuss · 22/10/2007 13:29

wheelybug, dd was just like that and I'm afraid I used pull ups for a bit because she would hold on like a camel all day and then be so desperate by the end. Then one day we were on holiday and she had been holding on forever and wouldn't even use the pull ups and so dh and I lifted her onto the toilet and held her there until she had to wee. She never looked back then and used the toilet all the time. She was 2.9 and also very stubborn! It just took her a while to realise the letting go sensation was OK when on a toilet or potty. Bribes didn't really work with her either.

Lissie, well done to your ds. I would take him out. You might be surprised by how long he will hold on. I was nervous with ds2 last week and he was fine on the school run.

I have seriously upped the stakes now for a poo on the potty with ds2. He has been promised some Thomas the Tank Engine Duplo for his trouble .

Slubber, I like your style, particularly the gin for mummy .

maisiedaisy · 22/10/2007 13:29

Well so far so good.

DD has had small swizzle type sweet each time she has sat on the potty. she is sitting on for about 10 inutes at a time.
Then success, we have had one wee and one poo! BUT she cried not sure why?

So we gave loads and loads of praise and a mini packet of buttons as a reward.

DD has asked for a nappy on a few times but I just keep reminding her that she will get a sweetie each time she sits on the potty.

lissiethevampireslayer · 22/10/2007 13:31

oh wheely, how frustrating.

well, i left dh in charge, went out and ds promptly wee'd on the chair. back to square one!

maisiedaisy · 22/10/2007 14:03

DD will be going for afternoon nap doon, advice needed - do I put a pull up on her rather than nappy?

lissiethevampireslayer · 22/10/2007 14:06

i would, do you have one of the feel'n'learn types?

OP posts:
Whimsy · 22/10/2007 14:08

Well we have had a couple of accidents but also three wee's on the potty. He seems to know what he's doing but we shall see what happens as the day goes on. I think he's getting a bit fed up of sitting on the potty all day, lol.

Whimsy · 22/10/2007 14:09

Black bag and towel?

maisiedaisy · 22/10/2007 14:10

no only puul ups, will et feel and learn ones tomorrow.

maisiedaisy · 22/10/2007 14:11

Don't think I am confident enough on day 1 for black bag and towel

Whimsy · 22/10/2007 14:15

Me neither, I am going to put a nappy on ds when he has his nap

lissiethevampireslayer · 22/10/2007 14:20

ds is definately bored with it now!

OP posts:
bagpuss · 22/10/2007 14:53

Whimsy, that sounds encouraging for day 1 . We had about 1/3 success on our first day.

Instead of feel and learn type pull ups why not just put the pull ups on over the pants? That way they feel the wetness but no mess for you to clear up.

Well, still no poo, but no accidents either which is a bonus.

maisiedaisy · 22/10/2007 15:09

Bagpuss that is a really good idea about putting the pull up on over knickers, I wish I'd have read that before I put her down for her nap!

Slubberdegullion · 22/10/2007 16:30

wehey, we have a wee in a potty. clever old dd2.

we now have the most almighty tantrum from hell as only 1 smartie given (whole tube expected). Haven't had a mo to make star/smartie chart yet. Wheelie I just stick them on with a bit of selotape.

dd2 now in situ on potty watching beebies.

one small problem I didn't predict was dd1 (3.5) having a massive wobbler because no smarties coming her way. Have roped her into the process now that both she and dd2 will get rewarded with potty performances.

dd1 now saying to dd2 "do you want to sit on the potty, good girl, good girl?" awww

Whimsy · 22/10/2007 16:30

Well he had his nap but didn't wee in his nappy so that was good.
lissie- ds is getting fed up too, infact he just threw the potty across the room, luckily it was empty
Good idea Bagpuss,shall try that

lissiethevampireslayer · 22/10/2007 16:51

arrrrgggghhhh, left dh in charge, (had to run to bank) and we've had 2 wee's and 1 poo, none in the potty. oh well, tomorrows another day. hows everyone else going?

well done lilslubber!
