Egypt - with ds1 I had to mainly cc during the day rather than the night. I can see ds2 being the same...

thats ok then. how did the nights work? or did they drop into place once the days were sorted?

hmm, he might have smelly breath for a day! well it'll keep the vampires away.

Egypt · 15/10/2004 13:27

Still says not logged in

To be completely truthful, I don't really remember the details now - from vague memory I did both at the same time after reading Ferber's book so I probably did exactly what he said. I think his philosophy is try cc in the day for a set max time (I think an hour or when next feed is due?) and if they don't sleep then just get them up and let them fall asleep while you're out or on their playmat if they do... if they don't, then just try again a bit later on. As we were doing GF it was fairly "easy" for us to decide when to give up, as we knew how long the naps were "supposed" to be.

I do remember it being hell on earth the first day, upsetting the second day, hard work the third but getting easier, token grumbling for a while for the rest of the first week then home free. My top tip is a) only start it if you're prepared for it to be really upsetting. b) start on a weekend when dh can hold you back and also help to reassure you that you're doing the right thing.

I don't think it'll be as bad for us with ds2 (thank god) because I believe we learned from our (many) sleep mistakes with ds1 and have tried to put ds2 down to sleep at least slightly awake right from the early weeks. Really, our problems isn't getting him to sleep now - it's keeping him asleep after the first 30/45mins. If I find a solution to that, I'll let you know

OP posts:
Egypt · 15/10/2004 13:48

thanks georgina. yes, i have no prob putting her to bed in the first place, but i guess thats because she falls asleep when feeding. tonight i may just wake her slightly when putting her down. then after the 45 mins waking, not feed her and do cc. if i can bear it. it's so hard when you're tired and just want to go to bed yourself though. i think i can manage stretches of 10 mins. surely she cant still be crying hours later!!!!?? then feed her whatever at 10ish as usual.

prufrock · 15/10/2004 15:08

B*cks - just wrote long post and dd deleted it.
IN short
GA - well done for getting through spurt
Egypt - well done for sitting up, cc won't be that bad.

kbaby. Tell your dh that if he is too tired to do his job then If you are too tired to do yoru job, dd could end up in hospital. It might shock him into being more considerate. FWIW dd gets up at 6 and doesn't get back from work until 6, then does 2 hours in the evening, but we have a rule that I do first 2 wakings each night and after that we take turns.

GeorginaA · 15/10/2004 16:30

Oh god, ds2 had a really good lunchtime nap ... I think. Really wasn't feeling well and was lying on the sofa while ds1 was watching tv. Sort of aware of ds2 crying out about 1.30pm and thinking "oh well, will wait five minutes and then go into him" and dozed off . Woke around 2.15 in panic and it was quiet, then he woke about 2.20 ish.

I'm in shock. Poor mite.

Obviously benign neglect seems to be the way to go at the moment...

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 15/10/2004 16:32

... or actually after reading cat82's thread I'm wondering if now ds2 has got over whatever it was (combination of cold, growth spurt, teeth, snacking so permanently hungry?) the sleep has sorted itself out on its own?

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 15/10/2004 16:33

ds1 & ds2 have been virtually self-entertaining this afternoon while I've just watched on from the sofa - what a difference when ds2 is well rested! I'd normally have been in full cuddle mode for the last hour by now...

Ha ha Prufrock! Your post makes you sound like a real slave driver (dd/dh mixup )

SusiS · 15/10/2004 17:39

ok. finally gave in and went to the doctors with ds! he just has a blocked nose now for weeks and it started interfering with eating and sleeping! well, she could hear a little bit on his chest but nothing serious (yet); and can't do anything about his nose grrrrr - poor little boy
she also checked ears and throat. well, at least i know it's nothing else ...
i just wished i could help him somehow!

well, good to hear that you all have success on the napping front !!!

prufrock: thumbs up to your "explanation to dh!!"

i think ds is still in the middle of "whatever it is" - cold, teeth, growth spurt, ...
i just hope it's over soon!

he had lots of fun in his doorbouncer today. but it was funny seeing his daddy jumping up and down in front of him to animate him. ds' face was like "gotcha. made you jump, ha?!" - just laughing his face off

oh and egypt: dd is sooo cute!! like the one on the purple dress

SusiS · 15/10/2004 17:39

oh and libb! how's it going???

cat82 · 15/10/2004 18:11

Hi all,

Well i'm convinced kiera is teething. Either that or she is possesed by the devil. Her cheek is bright red on the right hand side, and she's drooling quite a bit. So it could account for her NIGHTMARISH moods, and lack of napping. She was a little easier to put down today, but she still wouldn't stay asleep for very long, and is so, so whingy, it almost gets unbearable at times

Susi-It's horrible when they're poorly isn't it? I hope he gets better soon.

Egypt-Sooooo sweet! I'm going to get Dp to help me post some pics of my little ahem angel tonight i think.

Georgina-I'm glad things have settled down a little for you. I got your CAT, thank you, and will certainly take you up on the offer! when kiera is in bed i'll be able to reply properly.

Anyways, catch you all later. I expect lots of cooing when i eventualy get round to posting my pics

xxxx

GeorginaA · 15/10/2004 19:07

I think she's a little young for devil possession ... teething does sound likely, poor mite. Have you tried homeopathic teething granules of any kind? Not that we have, but we found them quite helpful during ds2's colicky episodes so I assume they'd be quite useful for teething pain too.

I've stocked up on those ice gel teether things too. Of course, hadn't got around to chilling them yet...

Still, I think it's easier to cope with if you know it's something rather than just their personality has irrevocably changed to miserable!!

OP posts:
Egypt · 15/10/2004 19:33

lots of poor little mites around then, maybe its their star sign!

well i tried to do cc. but kind of gave in after just 15 mins and picked her up. she was sobbing her heart out bless. all reason changes and i started to think, 'why make bedtime a horrid time when it doesnt have to be' and put her back on boob. within minutes she was asleep! you know, i am going to do this and just see if her nightime wakings improve. it may not be that she cant fall asleep on her own because usually in the middle of the night i do put her down still awake and she has a little grumble and drops off. going to ride the storm and then if at 6 months she is as bad may try cc then. she says i am soooo soft.

aw thanks for your comments about dd . most of those pics are from when she was much younger, except the door bouncer and the sitting one. should update it really. mind you, if you want to go here you can see lots of pics, some recent some the same as in photobox. i update it q a bit so mum and dad can look on their pc. some movies i think too.

GeorginaA · 15/10/2004 19:41

Egypt

Yes, wait until you're ready/she's ready/you're sure it's that. It is stressful, and I do think you have to go for it 100% for it to work. hugs

Evening all, DS is watching The Hives at the moment so I can post before his feed. We have had the DS from hell today according to the childminder - I had a very fraught sounding voicemail that I didn't get until he had been collected by DP - we had a lousy night last night so I did wonder what how he would be today . . . on a brighter note the missing socks that went awol whilst she had him yesterday have been found, being used as hats for two Barbie dolls (must've been her other charges bless them)

Being at work is nicer than I thought - I seem to have slipped back in fairly well (ie, demanding info on the Christmas party etc.) although working in the family dept makes for depressing reading at times as you can imagine. I have been dealing with statements/evidence etc. etc. for cases involving children and well . . . you can imagine some of them. There are some seriously ill people out there.

Ds is bouncing along to The Zutons - barmy boy.

I can't keep up with you all anymore but please be sure that I am keeping a beady eye out for you all and don't take offence if I don't address your particular situations (although it reassures me that we all suffering from the same cranky baby syndrome - I think the childminder was expecting miracles from the 1 dose of teething granules she gave him this morning . . .)

The cat has pooped in the bedroom again - WHY?! even more annoying is that DP has been home all day with "the flu" and didn't notice

I have already taken Monday and Tuesday off to straighten the house after re-wiring whilst DS is at the minder's - that will teach me to get that organised for the last week of mat. leave!

Here's to us all getting better nights soon xxxx
(Amfs, please go back to Twiglett - I love that name and it has a certain reassurance to it )

cat82 · 15/10/2004 20:08

Here are my pics proud
You can tell how much she likes her rice

kiera being a charmer

not sure...

noooooooo mooorrrrrrreee!

GeorginaA · 15/10/2004 20:14

She is a very beautiful little girl, cat82! I think the first one is my favourite - making eyes at the camera

Judd · 15/10/2004 21:04

Hello everybody. DS has been quite ill for the last couple of days, hence my lack of posting. He is just really phlegmy (sp?) and wheezy - could make excellent dirty phonecalls! I took him to the doctor who said he was a "happy wheezer" - ie. he has a wheeze but isn't listless, off his food etc. She prescribed an inhaler but hasn't really had much effect. We're just sitting it out really and keeping him calm and rested during the day. Luckily DH was working at home today as DD seemed to have "cabin fever" so I managed to get her out round the park for an hour.
Its lovely to see all the photos - we do have lovely babies don't we?

libb · 15/10/2004 21:10

We have the most beautiful babbys in the world - DS has seemed a little more settled tonight so fingers crossed for a long sleep . . . oh please, oh please!

Judd · 15/10/2004 22:59

We had 2 x 45 mins at the start of nighttime sleep. Tried so hard to avoid it but fate (literally) vomited on our eiderdown......as Blackadder once said ! DS necked whole feed down in one (upturned bottle on head ) and as I burped him, he upchucked the whole lot - must be the mucus still clogging his little throat. Overtiredness kicked in whilst I was changing him and swabbing the decks,s o crying 45 mins later and 45 mins after that. Seems to have calmed down now though. Sleep rhythms are blimmin' interesting though, arent they? (or am I just really boring?) Here;s for a good night, especially as I can't undo the 2 bottles of wine we have enjoyed......

chucklingteresa · 16/10/2004 00:24

ok girlies just found this site and been reading through some of your posted messages, I am a childminder and just remember when you have had a bad night we get a bad day with your little ones, and we normally have 2 others to look after whilst we are minding your little one who is feeling tired and possibly unwell!! and at the end of the day I have 3 under 5's 3 between 5/8 + my three over 8's, so I am not surprised that she contacted you to say he had had a bad day. AND well the socks, have you ever tried to collect 6 pairs of socks up that have not been put into toy boxes or onto barbie doll heads!! etcwhilst cooking the tea, changing a nappy, giving a baby a bottle, wiping a green gungy nose and consoling someone who has just fallen down and bumped their heads, the phone is ringing and my mobile is beeping!!!! You got it easy!!!

I love my job but sometimes it is hard!!!

SusiS · 16/10/2004 07:37

oh so we got it easy?
well, let me think???

we haven't had a full nights sleep in hmmm probably 9 months! - so that might be our excuse for "strugglin" - although i think we all are doing a great job!!!

sure we all knew what we would get ourselves into; well at least we thought we would - but i think we all agree we didn't really -
but you "learnt" how to do it! as we have to make it up as we go along - practically "learning on the job"

and not to mention that you get actually paid

sorry but i can't take it when i get told what an "easy" life i've got now!

agreed it can be like a tornado looking after a few kids at the same time - i used to be a kindergardener for a few years - and i don't think the "sock thingy" was ment to be accusing.

this site is just for us mums to get some things off our chests. and lots of questions and answers - oh, and having some fun

oops, again sorry

rant over!

libb · 16/10/2004 07:50

I wasn't complaining about my childminder . . . I think she is amazing and really lovely. FWIW I also warned her that we had had a bad night so she knew he was going to be cranky. The story about the socks was meant to be funny . . .
