nope too rainy and DD slept for 2 hours... unheard of... poor girl.

Think small quantities of cows milk OK. otherwise am confused about cauliflower cheese, Hipp veg with butter in, etc.

Judd · 16/11/2004 19:26

Egypt - I think eggs are OK after 6 months...think GF has them at about 8-9 months...I'll check later. Cows milk is OK cooked in food, but shouldn't replace formula/breast as a drink until 1 year (or around 11.5 months if your big tin of formula runs out and you are feeling poor ). I think the only real no-nos are nuts and honey (honey can cause botulism, OK age 1). Do protein meal at dinner time (12 noon meal to clarify incase of that old lunch/dinner dilemma!) and give water or juice to drink, not milk. Carbs better at teatime because they are sleep inducing which can only be a good thing! I'm doing lots of veg purees with cous cous, so its an easy transition and v. quick to make at tea time. HTH. And THANK YOU ALL for sticking with this thread, will ask DH to release me when he phones tonight. I phoned him last night and he said "I'm in a meeting!" I immediately put the phone down, imagining him and Bill Gates thrashing out the solution to Donkey Kong Level 5 together (I have very limited understanding of computing...)....turned out that he'd actually said "I'm eating" and was cross that he might have to speak rather than fill his face. Knob. Hope there is some good duty free winging its way chez Judd at the end of the week.

SusiS · 16/11/2004 21:14

egypt: was having the same thought. made some mince/veg yday; put some aside and made a ds version (no salt, but onions and a bit of garlic) - ds had that for lunch today. he loved the taste but found it a bit diff to eat so i wizzed it up quickly and it was gone in a sec after that
i think eggs are ok when wellcooked and cows milk (any dairy actually) too when you use it for cereals or cooking (just don't subs for formula/bf)
and i too find it hard to "cook" for ds. i see myself ending up cooking 2 meals ...

judd: good idea pasta/veg for dinner

prufrock: sorry to hear about your pox! hope they'll leave you alone soon

LOL at Judd. I like the Knob bit.

Ok the saga with the breastfeeding is that ive stopped during the day but im still doing the 10pm-7am feeds. She sleepy then so she takes it plus it also makes her sleepier than the bottle which is a bonus at night. Also how could I cuddle her in bed and give a bottle at the same time, The boob is soooo much more convienient it just pops out and is there right infront of her mouth.
Weve had 2 good nights. Although no where near as good as Twigletts Weve been putting her in her cot awake at 8pm and she falls straight to sleep. Shes taken to developing a strange habit though, she goes in the cot rolls on her belly, tucks her legs in and then with her face down rocks back and forth.
Shes woken at around 4 for a feed and gone straight back to sleep until 7. She has had medised for a cold at 10pm so I dont know if this is whats helped. She did stir and cry last night at 5 but by the time id kicked DP in the leg as it was his turn to get up shed gone back to sleep. Shes gone in her cot awake again tonight so heres all fingers crossed that she sleeps until 4. My toes are also crossed just encas she decides to make it to 7am with no waking.
Im glad I had dd in the summer. Its freezing getting out of bed for the feeds now. I dont think I wouldve enjoyed getting up every 3 hrs in this temperture.
I also read my Birth announcement again today. Im quite nostalgic. I would love to do that day all over again and really take it in and appreciate what was happening. Looking quite forward to doing it all again soon, even missing my maternity clothes.

Georgina hope your feeling better
Hope whoever has the pox is also feeling better.

linnet · 17/11/2004 00:17

Dd2 has a little cold She's not really bad just a bit sniffly. Wasn't settling well tonight so we gave her her very first dose of Calpol. she had a bottle after it and seems to have settled down now.

Her feeding is all over the place at the moment. She's eating three solid meals a day and seems to have cut down to three bottles a day I'm not happy about it. She's only taking 3-4 oz at every feed which I'm positive is not enough milk. I'm taking her to get weighed tomorrow so will ask the HV about it then.

RE solid foods. I've started giving dd2 half a rusk to nibble on. The first day she had it she just waved it around then dropped it on the floor but she seems to have got the idea now that she's supposed to eat it, well suck on it and make a huge mess before dropping it on the floor.

She'll be 26 weeks on Friday, wow we've made it to 6 months. Don't know why I feel that's such an achievment but I do for some reason. Because you can use cows milk in cooking does that mean I can make her mashed potatoes and add milk and butter to them?
Is it ok at 6 months to give them things like bread and butter to chew on? aren't they a little young?
Spots I tried dd2 with the Hip veg and butter the other day and she didn't like it.
I've discovered that she prefers Heinz Organic range rather then Hipp. Only trouble is that Asda which is right across the street doesn't stock that range so I have to trail into town to go to Boots.
Prufrock, sorry to hear your babies have chickenpox. Hope they feel better soon.

libb · 17/11/2004 06:17

Why?! I have today off because Oxfam are coming to collect our old sofa. (you can magine brand new, plush, glorious leather sofa sitting on crappy Working Mens Bar carpet)

I could be having an extra hour in bed right now, so why am I feeling bright and breezy and up before sunrise?! And who the earth is out and about delivering leaflets through my door at 5.30 in the morning?? (another crazy fool!)

SusiS · 17/11/2004 08:34

good morning everybody!
wow, one's up late the other one's up early
well, ds woke at 5 today but i refused to get up!
he cooed and babbled till 6 when i took him into my bed and we'be got another hour
but still, ds woke 12.30/4/5
just a phase just a phase ... - who said that???????

but besides that he is really cute. laughing at me when i go and pick him up in the morning. and gives me some time to get ready and keeps himself occupied good boy
isn't it amazing how simple things are big adventures to them???? - ds doesn't really need fancy toys he is quite happy with some paper or a box or some packaging (makes noise and is shiney )

solids should be much easier now, i know. but somehow it seems to be more diff! guess i just have to find a routine again - just good that we women are so flexible

MrsDoolittle · 17/11/2004 10:34

Hello spots - we had a lovely time in beautiful, beautiful Fife, it blew me away. It's so so different to living 'down' here. My dsis works in Dundee, we went to Tescos where the checkout people look out of an entire wall of windows onto the most wonderful view of the harbour We ate lunch out a couple of times and dd was an absolute star. Her first time in a restaurant and she sat smiling at everyone and banging her spoon. She also ate everything that was put in front of her - I'm soo proud
How can I live up there?

Bozza · 17/11/2004 11:22

Well yet again I have loads to catch up on again. DD had poorly tummy over the weekend and so did I but we're both fighting fit again now. Decided to do something about nighttime feeding now. Currently she's waking 12 and 4 approx. but then not that bothered at 6.30 am. So we're going to cut out the 4 am feed from Thursday night. DD has been keeping us awake and whinging more since being in her own room.

My routine on work days is fairly fine tuned:
6.30 am breastfeed
6.45 am shower, wash and dress DD, dress me, wash and dress DS, put kids ironing away
7.40 am go to work
8.30 am arrive at work and buy toast for breakfast
5 pm leave work
5.40 pm collect kids from nursery
5.45 pm change, heat up tea for DH and me, sort our fruit for DS and defrost fruit puree for DD, eat/feed
6.20 pm play
7 pm Bath kids, breastfeed DD, clean her teeth, story, song, into bed by 7.30 pm
Then I wash, iron, put groceries away etc, watch tv, surf etc.
Sort out bags/clothes for morning.
10-10.30 pm bed

Unless DH is away (like tonight) at which point I have to fit in giving DS his breakfast & the nursery run so am later to work which cuts my lunch break, then at night I have to clean the kitchen, load/unload dishwasher, sterilise and make bottles and clean DS's teeth and read his story. These are normally his jobs. Only work 3 days though.

Got to go now - off to hospital for scan to try and locate coil.

Bozza · 17/11/2004 15:02

Back from hospital. Had normal ultrasound, they couldn't find coil, had vaginal ultrasound (ie put a condom on a phalic shaped probe and stick it inside), still nothing so they decided to do an xray but insisted on doing a pg test first because its more than 28 days since my last period. Did xray and I don't think they've found anything but sending results to my GP. But surely I would be having a period if I'm not pregnant and I've not got a coil in because I'm only breastfeeding at night?

How's the pox going Prufrock? Was awful when DD had it - literally couldn't put her down for two nights. Passed her to DH while I got undressed and went to the loo but other than that held her 7pm until 7am. Hope your little one is not so bad and that you don't feel too cooped up.

GeorginaA · 17/11/2004 15:51

Would think they'd just want to be 100% certain before giving you an X-Ray, Bozza. They wouldn't have given you the x-ray if you were pregnant due to potential problems to the baby.

OP posts:
Bozza · 17/11/2004 16:18

Yeah I realised that Georgina and they did explain it and as expected the test was negative. But if I'm not pregnant and I've not got a coil in why have I not had a period?

GeorginaA · 17/11/2004 17:02

Sorry - didn't have my brain in when I wrote it! Didn't mean to sound patronising...

Dunno tbh. Ds1 was sleeping through at around 3/4 months from memory and yet I didn't start my period until 6 months (I know it was while I was still breastfeeding but I'd been going without the night feeds for a while). Wasn't there another thread on mumsnet that for several people they didn't get their first period until 8 months or so despite no longer breastfeeding? I guess our bodies just have their own clock as to when to restart.

Weird innit.

OP posts:
Egypt · 17/11/2004 19:31

hellooo. not got my period yet either but of course bf day and night. hopefully nights for not much longer...that sentence doesnt make sense. i cant make it make sense. hopefully not night for much longer. no. hopefully no night...oh bum.

having a glass of wine, that may be why. aaanyway. dd's good night habits are slipping away from her i can tell. she woke 11 3 6 7 last nights. grrr. i gave in and fed her each time. tonight i am definitely going to have to so cc if she wakes before 3 lets say. why can she go through a night then not? still not sure if she is waking through hunger or not for those morning feeds though.

went christmas shopping with mum today. 6 hours. poor dd. bought her some toy from elc and myself some clothes from next. earrings for my 30th.

hey - where's the meet next week? is it still on? who's going?

Egypt · 17/11/2004 19:33

just read my post. what bad grammar/spelling. dum de dum.

ooo, corrie is on...bye

SusiS · 18/11/2004 08:52

good morning everybody!
don't know what's wrong with ds!! he wakes up at 5.30am lately! and well stays awake
bit tireing ...

wow bozza you are well organised!!!
and re period: want mine??? could well live without it

hope everyone is having a good day

prufrock · 18/11/2004 08:54

No periods here either and only bf during day.

Pox is getting better. DD hasn't been that bad, but it's difficult having her at home for the whole week without any of our activities to go to. Have been spending lots of time with the kids that they caught it from! DS is covered in spots. He has 12 just on his willy and balls poor love. But he's not that bad now, the worst time was just before spots appeared.

kbaby, I managed to continue just 7am and 7pm bfeeds from about 4-11 months. It is so much easier, and more comfy to bf in bed isn't it.

Having started on purees I now just give ds anything we are having. We have given eggs (then read GF and realised I "shouldn't") in a grated courgette omelette which was v. succesful. And bread ad butter is his favourite - also likes houmous on it.

Twiglett · 18/11/2004 09:00

Bozza if it helps I stopped Bfing DS at 3.5 months and my periods didn't come back until he was 8 months old .. you just can't tell with your hormones when they start again and its nothing to worry about

Bozza · 18/11/2004 09:10

Sorry to keep going on but I have had a period - but they've stopped again. I suppose its just that I'm not convinced that the coil has dropped out and I've not noticed. Also my periods came back quite quickly with DS.

Well tonight is the night. Am only going to feed DD once. So we will see how that goes.

Hows the hand, foot and mouth Georgina btw? Have you got lots of blisters? When DS was about 1 I got called home from work because nursery suspected h,f&m but I knew the blister on his hand was from trapping it in the washing machine door. Still had to force the doctor to see him so that nursery would accept him back next day.

GeorginaA · 18/11/2004 09:20

Bozza - could the "period" have been just due to the coil insertion though?

HFM fine tbh... we got away very lightly I think. Still got a few mouth ulcer type things in my mouth, but not bothering me particularly. Certainly feel more well in myself. Ds1 has been a bit whiny today though but still only had that one spot! Ds2 seems fine - DEFINITELY not off his food!

Just seem to be playing catch up this week though... got 1001 things that need doing that I've been putting off because I was feeling grotty. Had to abandon the novelling attempt for this year!

Twiglett · 18/11/2004 09:23

OK who's doing finger foods and what kind of finger foods (how prepared?)

So far I have given DD a rice cake and that's about it

Even though its 2nd time round I'm feeling that frisson of terror over giving her new stuff and am still giving her purees most of the time (been up to 3 meals a day for 2 days now)

I know I should start on other things .. but haven't

Somebody hold my hand and walk me through it please

Twiglett · 18/11/2004 09:24

Oh and this time round I had spotting and could've sworn my periods were starting but it was a one off (I'm still BF on demand though)

GeorginaA · 18/11/2004 09:25

Not me ... I'm still on the purees too!

Am working my way through Annabel Karmel religiously because I haven't got time to plan or actually think anything through at the moment. When she gets to finger food, then ds2 will get finger food

OP posts:
Twiglett · 18/11/2004 09:27

OK and whilst I'm on paranoia street (and cos I don't know any other little babies) .. DD is still not sitting on her own ... well she can for a about 20 seconds on occasion but no real sitting (I'm sure DS could easily by now) .. How are all your babes in the sitting comparisons (bearing in mind that DD is one of the oldest)

Bozza · 18/11/2004 09:32

I know that catch-up feeling Georgina. Was a bit like that with tummy upset this weekend - only fortunately for me DH did a lot of it. Definitely bleeding (have had 3 lots actually) could be related to coil because first time was exclusively breastfeeding. Twiglett I would just start giving her cooked veg, pasta, bread etc - whatever you're having. DD has only had rice cake, cucumber and pear (but struggled to hold this because slippy) so far. Oh I tried to give her a pea last night but think this was a bit ambitious for her. I'm going to start trying to give her more this weekend. I think I'd just basically give her what we're having - I never salt veg anyway. Its as much a social thing so they can join in meals as anything to me.
