Anyone else having a bad day?

I woke up to hear DD yelling at 5am with an extremely stinky nappy - no going back to sleep there. So I went downstairs, switched the computer on and received 3 e-mails all containing the Klez virus, fortunately dealt with by Norton's Anti Virus before they did any damage but it took a bit of sorting out and checking. DD was in a foul mood and wouldn't eat breakfast so most of it went on the floor.

Yesterday wasn't much better, I was woken by the neighbour's car alarm going off at 5.30am and managed to get a stone chip in the car windscreen on the way to playgroup, not a bad one but right in the line of vision so the screen will have to be replaced and unfortunately isn't covered on the insurance.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Hope tomorrow is better.

I would have thought there is a big difference between flat lemonade and flat coke. Coke is full of caffeine which is extremely dehydrating. Maybe they put a blanket on flat sweet drinks because of the caffeinated ones (coke, mountain dew, pepsi, etc.). Also, could be that fruit juices are often a laxative (that's how i use them for my son) and therefore could exacerbate the problem. It sure is hard work sifting through all the conflicting info. for being pregnant and raising kids.

Both ds's are finally better thank goodness, though baby ds lost a fair bit of weight. I guess there is always going to be conflicting advice about what or what not to do. I was told many years ago by a doctor that flat coke is the best to give if no rehydrating powders are around, and flat lemonade was a good second. I susbscribe to the philosophy that any liquid they can tolerate is better than none, so I try a bit of everything and see what they can cope with best!

Mollipops - interesting info regarding flat lemonade. That is a medical recommendation here but perhaps we are behind the times.

mollipops · 15/07/2002 08:22

I'm pretty sure this is based on fairly recent research/findings (as in early 2002)...I seem to recall something on the news about it a while ago. Flat lemonade was what my mum and dmil always gave me and dh as kids (and still believed in - until I showed them the pamphlet the hospital gave me!) It is something to do with the sugars and the affect it has on the body's electrolyte balance. I know the rehydrating stuff tastes awful (we have gastrolyte but I'm sure it's equally foul) but I guess what they are saying is that that the the best course of treatment, and failing that diluted further with water, or lastly just plain water (unless breastfeeding, which is fine of course). It did actually say that the sweet drinks will delay recovery...but I guess it depends how dehydrated they have become. Interesting that the hospital there recommended the flat lemonade approach - definitely a difference of opinion over the other side of the world here! The main thing is that they are all better now!

Not having a bad day YET but my kids (4 & 6) have just decided they would like to camp out tonight in our garden. They have spent the last hour erecting the tent, filling it with sleeping bags, favourite teddies, books, pokemon flippos etc, but I know from (all too recent) experience that they will mess about until about 9 pm, then decide they are too scared to sleep alone and Mummy and baby(9 months) have to sleep there too! Could be a meany and say no but they were so enthusiastic I guess I could always open a bottle of cheap wine later, drink it from a plastic cup, play loud music and have my own festival!!

Oh, and have just checked weather forecast - 'heavy, with thundery showers expected'. Great

Yesterday I slipped whilst carrying ds down some stone steps and we both fell. He suffered a lump on the head but is fine, meanwhile I am in hysterics every time I think about it and cried four times at work today. In addition I have sprained my ankle and knee in aforesaid fall and limp like Long John Silver

It was too hot at work today and everyone was grumpy. I had a dreadful commute home. There is nothing for supper

Sorry to moan but I feel c*

leander · 15/07/2002 18:52

I had such a bad day that I actually phoned my MIL and asked her to come and stay for a few days!!!
Kidney stones playing up (again!), ds not sleeping through yet, pnd, dd being a typical 2 yr old madam and dh totally stressed with work. She'll be here tomorrow - hope dont regret it but everything was getting on top of me and I had to do something to get a good nights sleep!

PamT · 15/07/2002 22:13

oxocube, are the kids still camping out and are you likely to be joining them?

oxocube · 16/07/2002 08:18

PamT. I managed to avoid camping out last night! The kids eventually settled at about 10ish (they have already broken up from school). D.d was on particularly good form and kept taking off her pyjamas and dancing starkers around the lawn! She got scared through the night and came into our bed (she had wet herself, as she couldn't find the loo in the dark!) but d.s. loved it. He was surrounded by his teddies, Pingu, books etc and of course, his new torch!! Trouble is, though, he wants to camp out again tonight! The joys of parenthood

Well it is officially a bad day for me.

I'm just off to the meeting with the boss to start my redundancy period off and try to find a new job.

If anyone knows of an IT job going in the Gatwick or Bedford areas please let me know.

oxocube · 31/07/2002 12:17

sorry SH. Hope you find something else soon

What terrible news SH. I'm not sure what area of IT you're in but I always find my work via "jobserve.co.uk". It's great for specifying a particular location/skillset. Good luck - hope you find something soon.

soothepoo · 31/07/2002 13:26

SH - sorry to hear your bad news. Look here for vacancies in the Beds area. Good luck, and I hope you find what you are looking for soon.

Yeah, bad luck SH. I have a friend who works for a company called ISintegration, it's an IT company and they seem to have offices everywhere, they might be in your telephone directory so they are worth a try, they are always looking for new recruits. Hope your luck gets better soon!

Jendy · 31/07/2002 14:24

Sorry to hear about your bad news - good luck with your search.

Enid · 31/07/2002 14:34

Sorry to hear your news, SH. If its any consolation I got made redundant ten years ago (it was completely out of the blue) but it was the best thing that ever happened to me as I finally had the push to go freelance which I loved and was very successful at. Good luck with whatever you decide.

SimonHoward · 31/07/2002 15:05

Ladies

Thanks very much for all the support. If it was just me I wouldn't be too worried but with DW and DD at home and DW still wanting DD2 or DS1 fairly soon things are slightly tense.

21stcenturygirl

I love that site, shame the IT market for generalists (which is what I am) is down and that the one for specialists are up.

Smoothepoo

Thanks for the link.

aloha · 31/07/2002 15:41

Sorry Simon, I too was made redundant 3 times but now am very, very busy freelancing and really enjoy it. Best thing that ever happened to me. Hope it works out for you too.
