I woke up to hear DD yelling at 5am with an extremely stinky nappy - no going back to sleep there. So I went downstairs, switched the computer on and received 3 e-mails all containing the Klez virus, fortunately dealt with by Norton's Anti Virus before they did any damage but it took a bit of sorting out and checking. DD was in a foul mood and wouldn't eat breakfast so most of it went on the floor.

Yesterday wasn't much better, I was woken by the neighbour's car alarm going off at 5.30am and managed to get a stone chip in the car windscreen on the way to playgroup, not a bad one but right in the line of vision so the screen will have to be replaced and unfortunately isn't covered on the insurance.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Hope tomorrow is better.

Sorry to hear your news, Simon. I was made redundant a while back and am now, amongst other things, trying to get a freelance career off the ground. Hope you have lots of good advice from your union, HR department, recruitment agencies etc and can relax enough to enjoy your time off, as well as sorting out your future.

Mopsy · 31/07/2002 15:59

Also sorry to hear your news Simon. Thinking of you - could it be the time to go into consultancy, offering a complete IT service to small businesses for example? If you're based near Gatwick at the mo you can contact Sussex Enterprise (www.sussexenterprise.co.uk) for information and advice...hth love Mopsy xx

Tillysmummy · 31/07/2002 16:31

SimonHoward just read your earlier post. What do you do ? I am also in IT - CRM consultancy. What sort of IT are you in ?

SimonHoward · 31/07/2002 16:44

Tillysmummy

I tend to go for 1st-2nd line support jobs. I never really got into the 3rd line and development side. To little chance to chat to the people that actually use the system.

Tigermoth

No Union, HR department is a joke when they are even in the office, Job Agencies are sort of ok but abouy 80% of the ones I contact never even get back to me about jobs I'm interested in. luckily i'm applying for so many someone has to get back to me eventually.

Mopsy

One of my brothers tried that and ended up having to get a full time job as the work was so thin on the ground. Seems a lot of companies only want IT help when they desperately need it instead of keeping someone local on retainer. That and they take so long to pay up.

Kia · 31/07/2002 17:12

Simon, have you thought about compliance and security side of things? Data Protection and Auditing (DP) and Freedom of Information rights are major issues in companies right now and you may find jobs in that area if you look. The Freedom of Information Commissioners site has vacancies on it www.dataprotection.gov.uk and although they are based in Manchester, I did hear that they may be considering opening offices in other parts of UK in the future. But this could lead to links elsewhere.

I hope all goes well for you.

SimonHoward · 31/07/2002 18:13

Kia

Thanks for that.

They only want staff for their new regional offices at the moment but i will keep and eye on it.

bundle · 31/07/2002 18:23

Simon, you seem to be bearing up well. Hope you get lucky soon,

CAM · 31/07/2002 21:24

SH, look at a website called Gatwork which has job vacancies at Gatwick and in businesses which use or rely on Gatwick. Wishing you the best of luck.

ionesmum · 31/07/2002 21:35

Good luck x

jodee · 01/08/2002 00:09

SimonHoward, sorry to hear your news and all the best in finding another job. It's been happening all too frequently where I work, and people are getting no warning whatsoever, which comes as a shock.

Bozza · 01/08/2002 17:02

Good luck Simon Howard. I too work in IT support and things aren't great. Budgets being squeezed, pay freezes etc. I am quite de-motivated at work at the moment but at least I still have my job.

Kia · 01/08/2002 20:38

I'm pleased you looked Simon! Have you even considered - dare I say this - the civil service or the emergency services? I was actually thinking more in terms of working in IT in the Police or Fire Service where they have civilian staff, most of the time they are civil servants, but one force I know of has several IT people on contract for them because they don't have the IT skills they need. Particularly the forces which have their own budgets and are not beholden to someone else on how they spend it! It's not ideal, but an idea.

Have you considered teaching? Or does that thought send shivers down the spine?! If you have science skils and particularly maths you can practically write your own ticket these days. A friend of mine has had begging letters, asking her to reconsider! I'd probably go for primary school myself, having had a bellyful of FE!! What I was thinking of, is check out your local colleges and find out if they are looking for part-time or evening class lecturers, they usually start looking around August time once they've sorted out their timetables!!

Kia · 01/08/2002 20:40

Sorry forgot to add not only teaching IT but as support in all the areas I've mentioned!! I've even been asked to go and teach firemen how to WP!!

Sorry to interrupt (becoming a habit of mine as I find my way around mumsnet) Trudles do you have a peak flow meter? Springtime as well as Thunderstorms is worst time for my asthma. Starts with wheezing in the early hrs of AM (usually inhaler helps, even with the tightness in chest, but over a few days the tightness became painful in chest and back. Eventually (stubborn as I am), I agreed 1 late night 2 go 2 A&E whereas I was immediately given a Nebulisers & was able 2 go back home after. Only following my return back 2 A&E a few hours later because I originally let my asthma get so bad my oxygen level in my blood was very low, ended up with 2.5days in hospital having Nebulisers & Steroid tablets.

trudles · 08/08/2002 20:44

my peak flow readings are fine 460 thats the frustrating part.pleuisy is the imflammation of the lung linings thus causing friction and pain. the pain isnt too bad now I just feel a bit tight chested. maybe im subconciouly trying to breath too deeply because I know Its difficult If that makes sense.

Ailsa · 08/08/2002 21:49

I had a bad and embarrassing day at work today.

While walking (or trying to) back to my desk about 5ft from where I was standing, I tripped over the join in the carpet, landed on my knee and bashed my shoulder against the filing cabinet. I'm sat here now bolt upright trying not to move too much, aaaaaargh!

Ailsa · 08/08/2002 21:50

Forgot the embarrassing bit, the office was fully staffed (me + 29)

debster · 09/08/2002 15:15

Sounds like a health & safety issue to me Ailsa.

Tillysmummy · 09/08/2002 15:29

My boss threatened to fire me this morning, pretended nothing had happened next minute and totally retracted it and couldn't work out why I was upset. Doh !

lilibet · 09/08/2002 18:29

having one of those totally c**p evenings. 3 Children all at each others throats, shouts of 'he did this' she did that' constantly. My new kitten and my older cat are trying to kill one another and someone has drawn with green felt tip on the bedroom furniture!! aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh! I need alcohol! and chocolate!

honeybunny · 09/08/2002 20:05

I'm having a bad week!!
Monday-trip no3 to the vet for cat? Horrible abscess on neck, the wound is the size of a £5 coin. Anti-biotic pill twice a day (v tricky), saline baths and "force" feeding as she lost so much weight in the build up. (nb dont leave dh in charge of beloved cat and go away for 5days, they notice nothing).
Wednesday-get thrown up all over by ds1 immediately on getting up, already house bound as we have suspected chicken pox. Go to GP any way who diagnoses non specific viral infection but no chicken pox or ear infections. Still means staying home and trying to bf ds2 with a v poorly ds1 desperately trying to get in on the act. Change clothes on self 4 times due to ds1 vomit, ds2 posset x2 and cat pukex1(in bed asleep at this stage, cat pukes on my chest, ?????why????? eaten too many prawns YUK!
Despite dh being off work on Monday with theatres at work closed for cleaning all week, he's been in every day since and not made it home before 8pm, so much for his quiet week, and no help there then!
Down in the dumps all day today reflecting on my bad week, feeling crappy and guilty about my overstretched patience and patients, and wishing that I was a better mother, cat carer and wife.

ok enough self pity, perhaps tomorrow will be better. At least bath and bedtime tonight was good. 2 relatively happy children. ds2 fed well and ds1 was happy to sit beside me(rather than on top of me and ds2)as we read stories for 45mins. Not bad for a 21mo, a 16.5week old and knackered 34yo! Poorly puss is even sitting on my lap, purring and sucking her thumb, (dew claw) bless!! Just the anti-bitoic to go!
