or horrors of horrors.... does it really mean i yearn for 'sheer blonde' hair! and am just jealous!

I don't think so!!!

Pamina, I must admit I can't really even remember what 'my life on a plate' is about, but I think it was about having kids, and as I was a new mother at the time thats possibly why I enjoyed it. I went through a phase of only wanting to read things about parenthood!

Fionn · 08/06/2002 15:14

Enid - yes and yes! Did you? I thought something like this might happen sooner or later...!

Enid · 08/06/2002 16:51

Fionn, I went to Cambridge Arts College but knew Ben etc quite well!

Fionn · 08/06/2002 17:21

Enid - that lot were all a bit arty for me, I didn't really know them well. Is Ben famous too?!

Fionn · 08/06/2002 19:32

Enid - it's just occrred to me that India might be a friend of yours - no offence if she is, and nothing aginst arty types in general!

Ellaroo · 08/06/2002 20:02

Agree about the spastics commment (although hadn't remembered it), although have to say 'Don't you want me?' is much better than 'My life on a plate' anyway.
Has anyone read 'The Best a Man Can Get' by John O'Farrell? This is incredibly funny - I went through that phase too, Jessi, but this is from a man's point of view and made me howl. Have forced dh to read it and have caught him chuckling at the male antics in it.
Anyway, sorry to take this thread off the slapping route - will add Liz Hurley and Demi Moore to the list to get it back on track.

Rhiannon · 08/06/2002 20:33

Does't Ulrika deserve a good slapping for the Victim with a capital V she always is in every relationship she has. R

The large black man and the small oriental woman on Cbeebies singing "Happy happy happy happy birthday to you..."out of tune.
If I was a conspiracy theorist I could seriously believe it's sponsored by the breweries to turn us all to drink.

WideWebWitch · 08/06/2002 21:01

KS, wouldn't quite slap Nigella, but I do find comments in How to Eat like "if you haven't got any live lobsters handy you could always substitute plain frozen langoustine instead, although the taste won't have quite the same depth as the lobster blah blah" very irritating. (she doesn't actually say that exactly anywhere, but YKWIM)!

I know India Knight is a mate of Deborah Orr, who is the wife of Wilf Self. Used to hate DO but when I found out she was WS's wife she went up a bit in my estimation. Plus, mostly, her articles are pretty good. It has not had the same effect on my view of IK.

MalmoMum · 08/06/2002 23:14

Maybe it's India Knight's ego and her publiciist who deserve a large gin and tonic for getting us to mention her so much. 'My Life on a Plate' was intensely medicore fare. I thought I had bought an intelligent, witty insight into the world of parenthood...

I did enjoy Kathrine Flett's book. I had gone through a drop from the rafters split around the same time and found it intriguing that somebody else was so blown away with things (wasn't encouraged to write a weekly column about it though).

After several years in drama school, I thought the presenters on Cbeebies were perfectly capable on singing the birthday song in tune. If they wanted to. I thought they were just showing us how human they are.

How about the parents who sent in the One Man UpManship cards for the birthday annoucement on Cbeebies? Surely the editor who picks them out deserves an even bigger one. I really want to see more expertly coloured in, downloaded pictures of Bob the Builder with a picture of the birthday boy beneath!

My university lecturer, no work is ever good enough for her. Love to give her a good slapping at the moment. Spent ages on an assignment, thought I had it just right (not to mention trying to do this by correspondence with virtually no help) and she makes you feel like crap (sorry). At least my other lecturer is a wonderfully nice woman who gives good marks and lots of encouragement... I know this isn't quite relevant to the topic but she really does need a slapping.

tigermoth · 09/06/2002 08:07

Enid, you say you went to Cambridge Arts College. Do you mean the CCAT (Cambridge College of Arts and Technology) by any chance? That was my old college many moons ago.

Ks, snap! I've often wondered if there are any famous - or half-famous - faces lurking out there!

WideWebWitch · 09/06/2002 10:41

ks, I've wondered that too. Especially since they are both working at home a lot...

But I am not either of them, sadly. Would love to look and cook like Nigella although don't envy her the bereavement in her life to date, so wouldn't actually want to be her. And I can't think of any reason for wanting to be India Knight other than she does write and get paid for it which would be nice.

Tinker · 09/06/2002 14:45

I'm sure there must be a few who read it since this site does get quite a bit of publicty. I'm a Nigella fan - just in case she's reading!

I know David Aaronovitch said he uses a Spurs one. If they mostly work from home, using a pc, it's pretty inevitable they are going to get bored and distracted like the rest of 'us', I suppose.

tigermoth · 09/06/2002 15:17

Not quite in the Nigella league - I was reading a copy of 'woman and home' magazine, or something similar, in the doctor's surgery (as you do). My attention became fixed on a short story in it. The subject matter was halloween, with different people's views of children's rituals and celebrations. As I read it, the topics covered bore an uncanny likeness to a halloween thread here. Coincidence or not - who knows ?

Anyone else ever read something in the parenting press that seems to mirror a discussion on mumsnet?

candy · 09/06/2002 17:14

Have to add my support for the "Slap Nigella" brigade. DD and I made her brownie recipes the other day and both lots were an absolute disaster. We followed them to the letter but couldn't get them to cook - just a soggy mess. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm usually an okay cook so didn't think it could ALL be my fault!

Crunchie · 09/06/2002 20:33

Candy ypou have to cook them for about twice (or 3 times) as long as she says. But when you do they are so good!

bells2 · 10/06/2002 07:52

Absolutely Cruchie. Alternatively, you can cook them in a much bigger and shallower dish than she suggests.

Queenie · 10/06/2002 15:37

Three people for a slp this afternoon are :

  1. Rachel Hunter for being the talentless ex of
an aging singer and thinking that makes her
    famous and interesting.

  2. Robbie Williams for being an arse.

  3. Chris Evans for being alive.

See, if the weather was better I would be outside doing my gardening so blame the weather.

candy · 10/06/2002 19:21

Thanks Crunchie and Bells2 and there's me thinking that all these recipes are properly tested b4 they hit the poor unsuspecting public! Now the ones I was particularly interested in tasting were the cream cheese and choc ones; so do you reckon they're worth a second attempt?

bells2 · 11/06/2002 07:55

Definitely, I actually thought last night that I must make sure to recommend you try the cream cheese brownies. I had more success with these as the layer of cream cheese in the middle obviously doesn't need to be cooked as such (just melted). So for these, I only cooked them around 8-10 mins longer than the recipe suggested and they are divine.

I constantly enccounter errors/ dubious quantities/ timings in recipes.
